Brisbane, it's crap
It's quite obvious that this year has been a difficult one. With the season behind us and a new one approaching we enter a new decade. This gives us ample opportunity to re-energize, rebuild, and start fresh. What I would like to know is, given the chance to be at the helm, what would you do to ensure a successful new season? (if you were the coach that is)

I think we've got our basic stuff covered really well, and the heart is there, so I'd be focusing on tactical stuff like offensive set plays etc.

Realise that the game is based on attack and speed these days, with less emphasis on wrestling. Teach my players how to pass a ball without dropping it at training would be a good start.

I would focus on morale, consolidating defence and a massive focus on attack. Run set drills ad nauseam, sprint training, forward offloads...

From what I saw this year, what I would be concentrating on is our defence around the ruck - especially close to our line. Far too many tries and line breaks were made in this area. Closely related to this is the amount of metres we allow the opposition to get in a set of six. Far too often we allow a team to get easily out of their red zone into a postion where they can get away a kick that gives us posession too close to our own try line.

Secondly, we need to dominate posession more. This, of course, means eliminating errors but also making the most of the posession we get. For instance, we were one of the worst teams at earning a repeat set of six by tackling our opponents in goal. We tend to just blaze away and try and score a try and when that fails we throw up a "hail mary" kick and hope for the best. Need to make smarter use of the grubber into the in goal to get the ball back.

Last point, I want to see our fowards dominate the opposition more, physically. Snowden is becoming a line breaker and, of course, Gallen is always hard to handle but other than that we don't seem to have the "hitting" power we had in 2008. Look at the teams who are succeeding in the finals at the moment - they are all doing it from forwards who are dominating their opposition. Brisbanes win against the Goons is a classic example; pure power hitting.

Don't panic too much about "flashy backlines". Get the defence and the go forward right and the attack will look after itself. Look at the Dogs backline - ElMasri, Idris, Goodwin, Patten, Kimmorley - good players but hardly what you would call "dynamic" or "exciting". The fact is, they get the job done on the back of a dominant forward pack.

I actually thought our forwards did well this year in physically dominating the opposition.

I do think we need to work on our completion rate though. It seems like we hardly ever get to the sixth tackle kick. Stupid handling errors really cost us. We work twice as hard as we need to. We are constantly tackling.

Creative sets

I agree. You need to have an equal share of possession if not more than your opposition to have a shot at winning. Far too many times we kicked early or simply made one out rucks which never threatened the defensive line.

We also need to get rid of the cross field bomb as our only attacking option.

I'm not sure how you can make a team more dangerous/creative in attack but we sure need some lessons.

We also need some speed both in running on to the ball and in passing. Maybe we could borrow Billy Slater for a while...

we need to learn to catch the ****ing football. So many times have i watched OTHER teams play and they will throw fancy passes that the outside man will just take and make a huge break or a great try.

Everytime i watch our games and we try it we drop the ball. We throw it behind the player etc.
Id also love for us to actually move the line as we pass the ball in the 20. We get into there 20 and we pass from left to right which obviously works for teams but we stand ****ing still while we do it. Watch the broncos they keep moving forward closer and closer to the line.
Also we need our fullback to actually have and idea WTF our kickers are doing. i know slater is a freak and bowen is just as close, but **** every other fullback seems to know when our player makers are gonna do something tricky close to the line. Buts with us our forwards are the ones running to the ball.

we always seem to look slow when moving the ball across field or in set plays. we need to drastically improve our ball skills & as stated by someone earlier; Completion Rates!

Said it before... I'll say it again... I'd say the same thing I say to the juniors that I coach:

  • Hold on to the ball for a whole set
  • Don't have someone taking on the line if they don't have someone running off their shoulder
  • If it's a chancey pass - the chances are it won't stick
  • If you're going to spread it... spread it fast!
  • Use inside angle runners to combat sliding defense - it works!
  • A kick is only as good as the chase
  • Use grubbers in goal on the sixth from time to time rather than the "Hail Mary" bomb
  • The pack to get back quick so we don't waste three tackles in our own 20
  • Don't give away silly penalties and be patient
  • Don't try to do it all yourself and trust your teammates
Apart from that...

teach our young fast guys like fergo, stapelton to back up the likes of gallen, toopu etc who constantly get off loads away but normally go to another forward so we make a extra 10 metres but do not have chance of scoring a try as they do not have the pace. kearney used to do this very well & was missed this year. i think both gallen and toops were in the top 10 off loaders in nrl but not enough of these off loads led to trys as not often enough were the players with some pace were in a postion to recieve these passes.

spot on. that sort of support play is what has seperated the zeros from the heroes this year.

there is also this play i've seen just about every team do except us, and i've seen nearly every team score off it. its usually from a fast play the ball, hooker quick ball to the 1/2 or 5/8 who runs an angle like they're goin to pass wide, draws two defenders, quick inside ball to the full back on the burst... try time.

i'm no footy genius or anything but when that play goes off tries are scored and i swear we have never done it right

yeah support play is a good point.it is one thing we have been missing with tupou and gallen able to offload so well.even snowden makes the odd break but there is never anyone for him to pass to. but it comes down to structure in attack. if stapleton is out wide waiting for a 2nd man play, it is impossible for him to hang around the forwards waiting for an offload. whereas if there is speed out wide its not so crucial to have the fullback out there and he can then hang around the middle a bit more. there just isnt enough balance or speed in our backs to give ricky stuart options in his game plan
