These need to stay. Those comps are not about the NRL - especially the Qld Cup, where some teams have 0 NRL contracted players in them.

One big reason the u20's is going is because it is costing so much money and it's just not practical to maintain. In Qld I would like to see the NRL put hat money in to the Qld cup and potentially expand the existing u20/Colts comp to include some opportunities for television and big stadium exposure. This is already a state-wide comp. If anything I'd like to see the same thing developed in NSW, and a few games a year between QLD and NSW teams.

As i said under 18s becomes under 19s, under 20s becomes under 23s. Reserve grade goes to feeder clubs, with some contracted players to NRL teams etc.

While the mid north and northern NSW dont get much of a look in for NRL, its not really a place the NRL can afford to place any sort of NRL reserve grade team. Players in reserve grade that arent sorta first grade material generally work part or full time jobs to live off. There simply just isnt the employment opportunities to get these guys out of sydney etc as well as then being a part of a football competition. A port or coffs based reserve grade team would be the place that players go to kill their careers. Its a shame, but thats the problem with distance.

Just my thoughts
Bring back both reserve and presidents cup
Have something like the NFL. Two conference in which it will enable a few new clubs (ie Adelaide, Perth, 2nd Brisbane, and 2nd NZ team in competition. Each team place each other in their respective conference twice and plays 5 teams of the other conference. This will allow for 23 games, with it being replicated in the reserve grades, president Cup, women's, HM and SG.

I would set up the presidents cup (20s) in this manner and let it run a few years to enable enough players for the establishment of the reserve grade of the new teams.

I would have each NRL club linked to a qld Cup team, which will stop the bronco / cowboys monopoly on players.

I would love to see CRL/NRL invested more $ and develop by the Plate Cup (competition for rugby league incountry ) Each group has one team playing 20 odd rounds ie: Group 4 has 6 teams in it, which are Wee Waa, North Tamworth, South West, Narrabri, Collegian and Gunnedah. So that group would use the players from their respective teams to make the group team (Tamworth Lights)
I would have a cap of $700 k between 25 players and the juniors would be $350 k and doing the same as NRL 20s, which is studying or working.

Matty, I don't know who would fund teams from Adelaide and Perth in a second-tier competition. Can't see sponsors jumping on board either. Good idea in theory but don't see it working in practice.

Perth do have an SG team.
I heard they got a bit of following plus have sponsors lined up and $$ too. I would have Perth and Adelaide in top grade . But I would love to see nrl use the NFL format. Ie
Conference one: sharks, dragons, Souths, newie, Canberra, cowboys, 2nd Brisbane, warriors, parra roosters
Conference two: pennies, tigers, bulldogs, Adelaide, 2nd NZ, Melbourne, broncos, Titans, Manly, another team

If you're going down the route of conferences I think it would be better to have all the Sydney teams playing in the same one.

Presidents Cup , Reserve grade or premier league and 1st Grade , worked for years .
The good thing about conferences is it shortens the season like the NFL. 16 rounds then Playoffs
Have 2 Conferences where the best team from each conference play the GF at a neutral ground.
Have 2 more QLD based teams in the Comp also a Victorian team and NZ Team
I know WA love their footy but logistically difficult.

Nah don't to shorten it

If you have the two conferences with 10 teams in each. They play each other twice (18 games) and play 5 games against the other conference teams. You get your 23 games

Then change the conference up every year so it will let teams travel and be able to pla all teams in competition in a two year rotation

The finals would be decided with the top 4 from each conference.

Whether we like it or not with the shorter season will become a reality over the next 12 months in regards to player welfare and there long term health. The Alex McKinnon legal challenge will have a big impact on the game as we know it.
I would rather have a shorter season than no season at all.

I don't think it will, not significantly anyway.

I don't see what McKinnon's injury has to do with it tbh, it happened in the first round or two from memory so the length of the season would have made no difference.

I seriously doubt that.

No to conferences.

When will people realise that not everything American necessarily works here?

Conferences will effectively decrease potential sponsorship, and will create greater division in an already politically charged sport.

KFC & Maccas are going alright.

Slightly off subject, why are we still using Newtown as our reserve grade, if it is because we can't afford to run our own I can understand that. But it does not help us as a feeder club our Local Junior numbers are sadly really very sick. While Canberra ,MANLY and the Chooks have grabbed some of the best biggest junior league areas in NSW and they all have some of the wealthiest leagues clubs in the State. A win win for them more talent at hand and less need to help finanacially.

I am old enough to remember watch the reserve team used to run around before the main game it was really good to see the some of the younger guys running around and with some of the first graders.

It gave you a chance to see how they were all doing who might make it to Firsts mingled in with some old hard heads , giving a better indication of how they were going and it really made the day a better occasion.

As it is we are not getting any real advantage by being associated by the Jets, we are seeing less and less real junior talent on display, this is not helping our junior league or us.

Yeah but if we let the jets pay for half of that team we can put junior money into other areas. Like young junior development squads or the local kids leagues.
