Hey guys, I am doing a Uni assignment on the effect of the media on the NRL.

The question at hand is: "Is the media having a negative or positive effect on Rugby League?"

I need to get the fans opinion to complete this assignment, the best answer will have the privilege of being in my assignment and also receive some rep.

Thanks for the help in advance guys.

"Is the media having a negative or positive effect on Rugby League?"

I think the answer to that question lies very clearly in the lack of understanding that is inherent in the question itself.

The fact of the matter is that professional sport is actually a part of the media and entertainment industry.

To ask whether "the media" is having a negative effect on Rugby League is about as ludicrous question as "Are cows having a positive or negative effect on milk?"

The reality of professional sport, with regards to viewers etc., is that this show is being put on to gain your attention whilst every attempt is made to bombard you with as much advertising and product placement as possible.

In my eyes it is no different to the music industry, theatre, cinema etc.

Huge amounts of dollars are invested into this whole "spectacle" so that the investors can either directly or indirectly harvest the viewers' wallets.

So to answer the question...

Both Rugby League and "the media" are in a symbiotic relationship and strategic alliance - both of them are good for one another.

Yeah but, when someone thinks of a Rugby League player, they think of a person who goes out pisses where ever they please, rapes girls, gang bangs and smashing glasses over peoples heads. That is the stereotype that the media (newspapers etc) have now put on the game.

Also, what about how the AFL is run with the teams getting a certain amount of free to air games. While in the NRL, certain teams are just getting played again, week after week. The less showed teams are struggling because of this with low membership numbers, low attendance and a low supporter base because of the lack of exposure.

The NRL is owned by the media and the media is in a win-win situation when it boosts the notoriety of the NRL with negative media spin. The NRL ratings go up in the short term and the media is consumed more as well. The long term affect of this is unknown but I would suggest it is negative with the soccer mums taking their kids to play pansy games like tennis, cricket, soccer etc instead of League.

Every piece of information (both positive and negative) that we receive about those players when delivered by commercial media comes with a payload of advertising. Whether the news is good or bad is irrelevant in so many ways.

I guess the way I see it, the more people that are engaged with finding out all the dirt and muck about Rugby League... the less that they are spending their attention on all of the other distractions competing for their time.

Obviously, there is a critical mass with this sort of thing.

To give a biological analogy... a bacterial colony has an exponential growth that blooms at an amazing rate - what eventually slows down that growth to the greatest extent is when the colonies own toxic excretion starts killing the colony itself.

Anyway... that's a whole different topic!

"Is the media having a negative or positive effect on Rugby League?"

Put it this way, if we didn't have the blanket media coverage of the game we have today would it be so popular? TV, radio, internet, newspapers and magazines take the game global and exposes the game to people who normally wouldn't go out of their way to watch it.

As a result of this mass interest, the media has a duty to report the good and bad of the sport. It's not a one way street. So I prefer not to shoot the messenger when scandalous things are exposed or publicised in the media -- that's a journalist's job. The onus is on the players and clubs to keep their noses clean.

So I reckon the media has a positive effect on rugby league. It's the trouble makers in the game that have a negative effect.

Can't quite conjure up a sizeable post for you right now dier (desperately in need of sleep right now) but I think the sensible answer here is that the media has both a positive and negative effect on Rugby League. They expose the game (positive) and equally overexpose the players (negative). Media involvement in any sport is just one of the many "damned if you do/damned if you don't" scenarios in today's society. I'm sure you'll come up with a humdinger answer to the question though, dier.

if it's fans opinions you need...
you could easily notch up some stats by putting a yes or no poll (or a strongly agree/agree/disagree/strongly disagree/unsure poll) with a question like 'does the media negatively influence RL' on this site (if you make it the powers above should be able to join it to this thread), and ask people to comment in the thread why they answered the way they did. even if people don't answer you should be able to get a few quotes, which indicate fans opinions. might help if you clarify by "Is the media having a negative or positive effect on Rugby League?" do you mean it's reputation? as a business? the quality? all? any?

I bring up.. The reputation, the impact on crowds and memberships etc and also how it has evolved the game...

I suppose I could rephrase the question A little better:

"Is there Media having a negative or positive effect on these aspects of the game of Rugby League:
Reputation of the game/players
Supporter bases
The game itself"

Feel free to add another aspect or angle..

If the mods could add a poll of some sort that would be great.

If you want to create a Poll, create a new thread with your desired poll questions and then I'll merge this thread into the Poll thread.

This thread shows you how.

Cool?

Fitz did well in directing you to understanding the question.

My advice is for you to completely understand the question, then find yourself a tangent within that which suits you.

Careful about injecting personal opinion though, in order to do that successfully you need to clarify exactly where your personal opinion comes from, which will lead to a novel, rather than answering the question at hand ;).

Simplicity, fluidity, and fact might be the keys here. Unless of course you are after Honours, then I suggest you permeate it with a healthy bona fide dose of Ranga Juice.
