Hypothetical Question – Bird or Barrett?

Hypothetical Question – Bird or Barrett

So you’re the Sharks coach next year and have next years actual Sharks roster (what we know it to be so far)…and through whatever freak occurrence you have the ability to choose either Trent Barrett or Greg Bird…. Assume it was possible for a minute… who would you prefer in the sharks number 6 next year…??

PS – not trying to steal your thunder with the hypothetical’s hitman...

I would choose Barrett on the grounds that if Greg Bird was to return to our Club... or any other NRL Club then the level of scrutiny within the media on our Club would be amplified.

We have been in the spotlight way too much lately an it is our time to rebuild our reputation. Hopefully, we can do that without the spotlight squarely and brightly on us.

To the larger Australian society, Greg Bird is a pariah and is not someone we want to attach to the new and improved, revitalised Sharks.

I am not saying that Greg is good or bad or whatever... what I am saying however, is that we need to go to extraorinary lengths to re-establish the wholesome image that was once our trademark.

Barrett.

Bird should not return to the club, no matter who the choice was between.

I was sick of reading about him end of last year, and most of this year. Bird's actions began a huge media scrutiny on the Sharks and it was one of the lowest times in our history. Scandals were always for other clubs, not the Sharks.

League is not above morals.

I'd rather Barrett any day.

Depends on the circumstances. If Birds appeal is upheald and he is found not guilty, I'd have him back any day. Otherwise, it's just too much bad press for the club.

Baanya its all good mate, its great to see other sharks fans on here who post good hypothetical questions that really make you think and create good discussion.

My opinion is- anyone who chooses barrett is sorely mistaking or forgetting what a talent greg bird is. His CV in rugby league is unprecidented, and is unlikely ever to be matched for someone his age.
Half of the origins he played, he as MOM, then was shortly after voted players player of the NZ V Aus Test series- you tell me anyone else in the history of the game who has achieved that?
Bird is one of a kind, I was always suprised when I started watching league, they`d get a back who was very quick like Jennings, give him the ball, hed run it over the line and everyone would say " what a sensational player!!" But to me, I thought, couldnt you just get any old black fella from the bush with lightening pace, put the ball in his hands then you instantly have a great player.

Bird was different, bird`s talent wasnt something you could manufacture like that, it was hard, tough, ruthless football for 80 minutes each week.Oppositions defense knew, whenever bird was on the park it couldnt aford to rest for one second, because it was only a matter of time that he would get the ball and be charging like a bull through the lines, usually giving a great offload for another huge gain.

It is very very common to see a back with speed or a guy in the halves tear apart a game each week, its a given and it doesnt impress me much, there are only 2 FOWARDS I have ever seen destroy an opposition with thier speed, skills, strength, footwork and defense. One is Birdy.

Baz is great, but his days are numbered, birdy is reletively young, and should have been a captain of NSW in the future.

Anyone who is still looking down on Greg for the incident which he is found guilty of, well Ill just say Ive had the privlidge of getting to know some of Gregs immediate family quite well, and if you knew what really happened, you`d be quite suprised and wouldnt say the things you do.
However, ofcourse his stories have changed that many times, its hard to know whether its the truth.

That is going waaay too far mate.

There have been many great players with a better CV than Bird at a similar age. He wasnt all that young either..

Bird is a good player no questions about that. Both he and the club worked hard to clean his image up. It is a shame that he actions have caused him to suffer once again. I think it is time the Sharks stood up and said we won't good people who are good footballers, rather than bad people who are good footballers. Look at the swans and there no "********" policy. They have built a club which does not tolerate off field or even on field rubbish. Would rather support a team that comes 2nd last than a team with ratbags in it like the Broncos or the Roosters. Look at the Dogs since they cleaned house. There are good players out there who are also good people.

You're delusional, hitman.

MOM in half the Origins he played doesn't mean dick when he only played 2 series, and not even 2 complete series, he played 4 Origin games by age 25. By the time Darren Lockyer was 25 he had;

- been top point scorer at the Broncos in consecutive years (his first 2) one of those broke the Club record for points in a season
- Along with Lote Tuqiri and Chris Walker was the top try scorer at Brisbane
- won 3 Grand Finals and picked up the Clive Churchill in one of them
- was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for contribution to Australia's international standing in Rugby League
- was approached by Essendon to switch codes
- skippered Queensland to a series win
- awarded MOM in an Origin match
- won the Bronco's Club Player of the Year Award
- played 11 Origins
- Played for his Country in a World Cup and I'm unsure how many Tri-Nations and ANZAC Tests

You're lucky I was fair and stopped when Lockyer turned 25 cause by age 26 he'd won a Golden Boot and skippered Australia.

I was gonna list the achievments of a few blokes but I reckon Lockyer is enough. Obviously you'd get similarly outstanding CV's from the likes of Johns, Fittler and many others. Given Trent burst on the scene at 19 and had played Origin by his 21st birthday I'd reckon his list of accomplishments in Rugby League by age 25 would also give Greg's a run for their money.

But overall, I've gotta agree with zak and others and tell everyone to get over Greg Bird. He's gone. He isn't coming back (to the Sharks Club at least) any time soon. That race is run, it was fun while it lasted and who knows what could have been had everything remained on track and smelling like roses? Unfortunately we'll never know. One thing I do know though is we'll get a lot further focusing on what we have and where we are headed rather than focusing on what we lost and where we might of went.

Bird > Barrett

Well depends....

I would say Bird, now don't freak out but my main reason's are:

- Barrett only has one more season left, he is good but hes not there long-term so we would need to replace Barrett after next year anyway.

On the above note, Barrett is a quality five-eighth but Bird is just as good if not better, Bird really only did 1 thing wrong and that was the stupid mistake of trying to find out if he could put a glass through his girlfriends face without breaking it, of course we all know it didn't work.

If Bird ever did return i would welcome him back, but he would only have one small chance left.

Cap- maybe I was wrong to say what he has done was unprecidented, I take it back I have very little knowledge of league pre 04ish, so i shouldnt have made a claim like that.

But would it be fair to say locky was playing a position where a 19 yr old kid can dominate, birdy`s game required a much stronger more mature body, built by more yrs in the system. Locky probably had much better coaches around him to develop him at the time too. Look how many rep stars the broncos have produced, we have like......3?

I just thought with the changing of the guard in our coaching department, sticky finally gave him a solid foundation to work on, and if he was still in our game right now, he would be playing each origin match for the next 7 yrs and become on one of the greatest.

Locky is nothing but a junkie.
