I was just sitting here and I had a MASSIVE craving for a milshake...

Not just any milkshake... a Parry's milkshake.

Parry's Milkbar and chocolate shop is so much of an institution in the Shire and I have vivid memories of coming up the stairs from Caringbah Station and the smell of chocolate and coffee that would fill the air with heady tasty goodness... if the Sirens didn't sing to lure the Argonauts and used a scent instead, it would be the smell of Parry's!

Their shop display at Christmas, Easter and Valentine's Day was like an Alladin's Cave to me as a child growing up. Sparkly tasty jewels from one end of the shop to the other.

Curiously, I ended up dating one of the girls who worked there. <sigh>

Recently, I took my 3 year old daugter for a milkshare there and they still make the best milkshake around.

Bliss!

Good old parrys yes very found memories indeed even just the 600 carton of milk with some flavour added then shake it up and get it all over your uniform before school started lol.

Also the hot greasy scallops with BBQ sauce on a winters day from the fish and chip shop next to parrys for that long trip to nulla.

Also the little Red freight train/tram that dropped off and picked freight to the station.

Those were the years.

Here's another great idea for you Shire residents, or even those who don't mind a bit of a drive for a great day out. Chuck the kids in the car, pack the boogie boards and an esky full of drinks and snacks and take a beautiful, scenic drive to Garie Beach in the south of the National Park. You can either drive all the way through the Park from the Farnell Ave (northern) entrance or drive down the Princes Highway to Waterfall and use the southern entrance. Either way, it's a very pretty, winding drive through environments that range from open bushland to heavy rainforest.

When you get to Garie, you'll find a beautiful beach that is surrounded by cliffs at either end. Most of the time, you will have the place almost to yourself, barring the lifesavers. I took the boys down there on Monday and there were about a dozen other people there, although that will increase when the surf's up and more people take their Xmas holidays.

The boys had a great time riding the boogie boards although the conditions were a bit windy and the surf was messy and closing out. Tha facilities there are great with a realtivley new clubhouse that has great shower and changing rooms.

After a few hours in the surf, we were all starving so we drove up to Waterfall where we visited the "World Famous" Waterfall Fish 'n Chip shop (on the Princes Hwy) for a huge feed which cost about $20.

All in all, a great day out that will cost you peanuts!:cheers

Parry's Milk Bar is a great memory Fitzy and one that is still going. My mother worked as a teenager in the 50s in the original store in Kogarah/Rockdale. She never tires of telling anyone that she once worked at Parrys!

Candy Corner at Gymea another great milkshake. Everybody knew the owner as bullethead due to a dodgie hair style. They had a great selection of lollies great milhakes served in a glass and the balance of the rest in the chilled aluminium milkshake cup. The shop had a big sign on the front HAMBURGERS but they never sold them.

Gil,

Yeah mate, I remember the place you're talking about. I recall there being about three blue and white laminex booths on the right hand side as you walked in. Good chips... ahhh back in the days when they used beef tallow as the cooking oil rather than all of this "healthy" polyunsaturated vegie oil that they use now! It was run by a Greek guy called Greg, but all the local ratbag kids used to call him "Gleg".

Without a doubt though, the best hamburgers award must go to Paul's Famous Hamburgers on the east side of the highway at Tom Uglys Bridge in Sylvania. They're legendary not only throughout the Shire but also across Sydney. My dad used to take us down there for "special". Great memories playing punch buggy with my brothers out the front whilst we were waiting in the queue... which is usually about ten deep all of the time!

Any non-Shiries should really do themselves a favour!

Hey Boys, sorry to come across as a name dropper again but I do have a connection with Paul's Hamburgers as well.

I used to go there quite often with my Mum and Dad when I was around 9 or 10 and I remember like you Fitzy, standing in queues 10 deep waiting to be served. But it was all worth it as they are the best hamburgers in town.

As the story indicates Paul's Hamburgers was started by the Zerefos family and through my connections with a local amatuer theatre group I met up with Bill and Marie Zerefos' daughter. I had another mate that I had met doing theatre work who actually worked for them for a time as a chef and I found myself going down there quite often. The only problem was that Marie would never let us pay for our hamburgers! Sounds good but its a little embarrassing when there are queues of people and they can see you are not paying. So, Marie devised a little scheme where you would hand over the money but she would give you the same amount of change back. No one seemed to notice this.

You may have heard of Bill's sister Helen Zerefos who is a renowned singer and performer - I did have the pleasure of doing a concert with her once at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre back in the early 90s. I sang a very bad rendition of "The Road to Mandalay". Thought I could sing back then but I was wrong!

Anyway, yes Paul's is still going strong but I must admit, I haven't had a burger from there for quite a while. Must go try it again....

Dont think the Engadine one is run by the owners of the Sylvania store anymore - my mate used to work at the Engo store and he said it has changed hands. Sylvania is probably the go if you're after a real 'famous' hamburger.

I'm only 23 but notice all the changes around Engadine (been there my whole life so far) and realise how much it has changed in that time. Even more so with the new senior centre re-development and what not.

There is also a new milkbar/cafe opened near the RTA in Engadine, serving all the USA lollies & drinks, etc - similar to Parry's

Both these store operated at the same building, at the intersection of President Avenue and The Kingsway, Caringbah (now Bova Pharmacy). Waltons was there first until they folded and it became Norman Ross. I know this useless information because my first part time job was a 15 year old casual sales assisitant selling TV's and stereos! I stayed there through the Norman Ross period until it went under and we all got re-trenched! Then I went and worked at Clark Rubber for awhile until I got a real job! Ahh...memories.

Yeah mate, the Pauls Engadine store has changed hands but they must have bought the rights to the recipe or something 'cos they're still the same burgers!

As for the constant changing face of Engadine, you only know half the story, I'd say (guessing you were born in '86?)

My parents built their first house at Engadine when I was two or so, around '72-3. Back then, our road was unsealed, we had a septic tank out the back and there was only half a dozen other houses on the street. Everything else was bush!

Even when I was about 10 years old, we used to be able to ride our skateboards from the top of the hill in Caldarra Ave, near the police station, straight down the midlle of the road, flat out and then cut the corner on the wrong side of the road to make the right into Porter Road without any chance of getting hit by a car. Try doing that today, you'd be dead before you got to the intersection of Anzac Avenue! Anyway, the changes I have seen in the 'Dine in the last thirty or so years still blows me away, can't believe it's the same sleepy little suburb I once grew up in!:cheers

This all applies to me too Iron Shark, my parents set up home in Engadine in 1967 when I was three years old in Achilles Rd, on the corner at Woronora Road. I can remember there being no Engadine Leisure Centre, it was all bush as well. When I was 9 or 10 I used to explore through there all the time, playing armies and just getting lost in it for the day so my parents couldn't find me.

Played so much junior soccer at Anzac Oval for the mighty Engadine Eagles before switching to Gymea United when I was around 19 or 20. Coached junior sides down at Anzac as well.

You are right so much has changed but I do get back there quite often as my mum still lives in the same house. Good times!

Do you really love Sutherland Shire?

Do you really love Sutherland Shire?
BY SANDRA SIAGIAN
St George & Sutherland Shire Leader
16 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM

An Aspiring filmmaker has had a confidence boost after winning the Caltex "I love the Sutherland Shire'' video competition.

Andrew Chambers, 27, of Kirrawee, was the lucky entrant whose video caught the eye of Sutherland Shire Council's and Caltex judges, with his take on why he loved the district.

The 30-second video has no narrative or written words, except for an introduction of his name and the line "I love the Sutherland Shire''. Mr Chambers said his idea was to highlight all the iconic spots in the area, in a way that viewers could instantly recognise what they were looking at.

"The storyline followed a couple of friends driving to the beach and the locations they pass on the way,'' Mr Chambers said.

"I used railway stations as the header for each suburb, putting in snippets of local spots.

"It was an interesting challenge to lay out a story without telling the audience what they were seeing.''

Mr Chambers has been filmmaking for seven years and has had his fair share of rejection, with his work knocked back three times from the Tropfest short film festival.

"I was losing confidence, making films that weren't going anywhere,'' Mr Chambers said.

"My unlucky run at Tropfest was the catalyst for me entering the competition. I knew how to make films and I wanted some exposure.''

A Sutherland Council spokeswoman said the first-time competition was created to support the local arts community and encourage youths to be creative.

"The competition offered a forum for the shire's up-and-coming film and video-makers, as well as for hobbyists,'' she said.

"As it was held over the busy Christmas period it attracted just seven entries.''

A Leader reader wrote in to complain about the film when it was broadcast at the Cronulla Australia Day celebrations, bemused by the contents of Mr Chambers's entry.

"The video showed young guys hooning around in a car visiting every drinking hole between Sutherland and Cronulla,'' said the reader.

"Surely this video did not capture the essence of our beautiful shire, which abounds with many healthy activities for our young to engage in.''

But Mr Chambers has hit back at these suggestions, and said only six out of the 63 shots in his film showed local pubs.

"When each location is on the screen for only five frames, the audience doesn't get a full feel of what I was showing,'' he said.

"It never crossed my mind that I was promoting establishments that serve alcohol.

"The majority of my shots were of street signs.''

Yeah of the ones there I'd pick his. Has the most "story" to it. Good little film for 30 seconds. The others have some nicer shots, but feel more like a combo of nice shots. [/film critic]
