Ex-Workington Town star lands Maryport coaching job

Hard-working Kiwi forward Okesene was a favourite at Town for many years before hanging up his boots and turning to coaching with Ellenborough Rangers in 2004. He then parted company with them after nearly two years, deciding to call it a day and move on.

But now he has decided to return and Maryport are delighted that he will be leading them into battle next season in the Cumberland League.

Maryport secretary, Paul Williamson, said: “We are really pleased with his appointment. We went off the boil after Christmas last year and there were a number of factors contributing to that.

“The weather and backlog of fixtures didn’t help and we never recovered from it so we’re looking to get our stability back into the club.

“Brett Smith took over in a caretaker role last year and he suggested we go for Hitro, and Brett will continue with us as a player coach with Hitro as head coach.

“Hitro was looking to get back into the game and we are delighted to have him.”

Okesene has played at the highest levels of the game, representing his native New Zealand as well as playing for top teams in the domestic game, Auckland Warriors in the NRL and Hull Sharks in Super League, before joining Workington.

He will coach the side, assisted by Smith and another player Simon Pattinson.

Okesene will hold his first fitness and getting to know you session with the Maryport players on Monday, June 7 at 6.30pm at the club.

Pre-season training will then begin in earnest on June 17 and it will continue on Mondays and Thursdays from 6.30pm.
