Gallant Magpies die hard
11Apr06

THE NSW Premier League local derby between Wests Magpies and the undefeated Balmain Tigers was all it was talked up to be - except there could only be one winner.

The gutsy Magpies fell short 31-24 at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday after level-pegging with the Tigers 18-18 just before half-time.

Just minutes into the second half, Warren Williams crossed to again tie the game up 24-24.

Fans on both sides conceded that a draw would have been a fair scoreline but as the clock wound down the Tigers launched a huge bomb and in subsequent play added another six points and a field goal to seal the win.

He said that if the players took this form into coming games, they would start to see the results. Wins have not been forthcoming so far this season. As an experienced former player, Dorahy has been as frustrated as his charges.

"What I was most happy about on the weekend was that on this occasion, versus our previous four games, we had a total commitment for the full 80 minutes," he said.

"Given that Balmain has a full-time squad and a number of ex-Wests juniors, they were expected to win easily.

"I was certainly very proud of the way our guys put in, to get the result they did."

The Jersey Flegg Magpies won 36-16 over Central Coast RIP, after leading 16-10 at half-time.

In other results, SG Ball downed the Cronulla Sharks 32-22. The Harold Matthews outfit lost 22-4.

Premier League and Jersey Flegg play before the Wests Tigers game on Sunday at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, the minor games kicking off at 10.30am and noon.
