Fresh faces unveiled for Souths
20th February 2010

MERCURY Cup premiers Souths will unveil some new names when they take on Redcliffe's FOGS Cup team in a trial at Shark Park today.

MERCURY Cup premiers Souths will unveil some new names when they take on Redcliffe’s FOGS Cup team in a trial at Shark Park today.

The Sharks have retained much of the side which beat Moranbah Miners in last year’s grand final and will be boosted this season with the addition of several quality players.

“I think we’ll be really competitive again this season,” coach Nathan Doyle said yesterday ahead of the curtain-raiser to the STM Mackay Cutters trial against fellow Queensland Cup team Redcliffe.

Among recruits are second rower Bevan Train from Logan, back rower Tom Baker and centre Gordon Rattler, who played for Northern Pride in the Queensland Cup last year.

“Tom’s come back to us from New Zealand, where he’s been for the last three years,” Doyle said.

As well, former Cutters rake Luke Srama has rejoined the Sharks, a move welcomed by Doyle.

“That’s really good for us, he’s a quality player,” he said.

Last season’s skipper and Mackay player of the year Stu Cruickshank won’t be playing this year, while centre Peter Hassell has moved to Toowoomba. Fullback Tom Ryan hurt his knee in the Indigenous v All Stars curtain-raiser to the Cowboys-Wests Tigers NRL trial last Friday, and although the injury is not serious he’ll be rested ahead of the start of the season on March 13.

Former Shark Allan Heldsinger will be back playing against his old club for Redcliffe at hooker.

He played wing for Souths three years ago and has since played Queensland Cup for Redcliffe, along with forwards James Crombie and Grant Flugge who are also named in today’s team.

“They’re all Queensland Cup regulars, so this will be a good test for us,” Doyle said.
