Rare honour: League legends Greg Alexander, Paul Sironen and Danny Buderus with current Australian Schoolboys Tim Auremi and Albert Kelly.

KEMPSEY-born NRL superstar Greg Inglis was selected in the Australian Secondary Schools Team of the Century last week and another local lad was on hand to accept the Melbourne Storm five-eight’s jersey.
Current Australian Schoolboy Albert Kelly received the jersey on Inglis’ behalf as the Storm hero flew to Brisbane in preparation for his team’s elimination final clash against the Broncos.

Kelly is Inglis’ cousin and it was deemed fitting he should accept the jersey for the 21 year-old Bowraville Tigers product, who was picked on the wing.

A number of Kelly’s current schoolboy’s team mates were also on hand to receive jersey’s for other players unable to make the presentation.

Past and present Australian players make up the majority of the team.

Former Kangaroos including Newcastle hooker Danny Buderus, Penrith halfback Greg Alexander and Canberra lock Bradley Clyde were all picked in the side while current Roosters coach Brad Fittler was named at five-eighth.

Cronulla legend Andrew Ettinghausen was named on the opposing wing and current Test players Mark Gasnier and Justin Hodges filled the centre positions.

Balmian’s Tim Brasher was selected at fullback.

Three members of the inaugural 1972 Australian Schoolboys team, which went through undefeated in its 13-match tour of Great Britain, were included.

Les Boyd and Craig Young were selected at prop while Ian Schubert made it onto the interchange bench.

Retiring Manly great Steve Menzies was named at second row alongside another Balmain legend Paul Sironen. Bronco Tonie Carroll, former Newcastle Knight Matt Gidley and New Zealand Warrior Brent Tate round out the team.
