Sharks still home for Mazzoleni

SOMETIMES in life, all the puzzle pieces just seem to slot effortlessly into place.

Caloundra rugby league captain Dominic Mazzoleni experienced one of those moments not long after he arrived on the Coast from Sydney early last year.

He had moved to the Coast because he did not want to raise his three-year-old daughter in Sydney.

A former Cronulla player, Mazzoleni was strolling down the street when he bumped into Caloundra coach Nick Paterson.

Paterson, who also enjoyed a period at the NRL club during his playing days, recognised Mazzoleni and urged him to pull on a Caloundra jersey.

For Mazzoleni, playing under the Sharks banner again, albeit in a different state, under an old acquaintance, seemed a good fit.

He was left in no doubt he had made the right choice after playing a pivotal role in Caloundra’s grand final win over Maroochydore last year.

“We just bumped into each other and I signed up with Caloundra the next day,” Mazzoleni, who played Jim Beam Cup for Wentworthville after his stint with Cronulla, said yesterday of his meeting with Paterson.

“Nic’s a pretty good coach to play under.”

Caloundra heads into Sunday’s grand final rematch against Maroochydore at Shark Park undefeated, with three wins and a draw from four games.

But Mazzoleni, a front-rower, said that form-line was misleading and he believed Caloundra had plenty of improvement left.

“We’ve been playing pretty poor but just hanging in,” he said.

“We’re definitely not playing really well. We’re playing for 30 to 40-minute spells but not putting together a consistent performance for the whole game.”

The two teams met in a scrappy affair under lights in round two, an encounter Caloundra won 30-16.

However, the fact both teams have a few games under their belt, combined with the day start, has convinced Mazzoleni a better spectacle will ensue.
