Dean Carney,a big goal-kicking utility player from Wollongong, continued the Sharks surfing tradition as made famous by 1970's five-eighth John Monie.
Carney not only starred on the field, making the Australian President's XIII that toured PNG in 1985, but he also won a 1981 Australian surfboard title and travelled to Hawaii with the Australian junior surfing team.
Cronulla coach Terry Fearnley switched Carney to the backs because "he was sick of seeing Eric Grothe run over the top of our wingers!"
