Manly look like they cannot afford to resign David Williams, he is asking for about $250,000 a year whilst he is on $50,000 a year right now... he may have to find a new home! How about ditch Greg Bird... save all the hassles and sign David Williams, he is a freeking exciting winger... we need a David Williams...

Please Sharkies, steal Manly's talent like they have done to so many of the years!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE....

And let the WOLFMAN become the SHARK-WOLF MAN! HAHAHA

I reckon he would be a great buy, depending on what you can get him for. Anything under 300K is probably reasonable, considering he is now a Test winger. By the way, didn't he have a great game against PNG last night?

He's great. But he's just a winger, and unless more space and opportunities are created for him, he won't do much more than our current crop of wingers do.

I think Poms is about right when he says $200K. Can't see the sense in forking out much more than that for a winger TBH.

i'm sorry, no winger is worth 200k. they are only as good as the players who give them the ball to score trys.
and as far as ditching bird in favour for williams.......dump a playmaker for a winger? dont think so.....i think bird will most likely (hope im wrong tho) end up sacked by the club, and with that cap sapce sign a decnt playmaker or another good forward.....but dont blow all the cash on a winger

I'd be surprised if there was a single winger in the competition on 200k. 150 maximum for any winger.

Yeah, I don't know what a winger gets in the NRL, anyone got any ideas? I wouldn't have thought you'd get a Test level player for less than 200K though? I could be wrong...

:lmao poor misi, stuck outside simmo, then talau for the samoan v ireland game

we do need a great CENTRE to play in the #4 jersey, but forking out over 200k is just being desperate and paying way overs for

you say Bird is a playmaker? I say he is probably the worst playmaker in the league. Its no secret he struggles at 5/8, ppl even wanted to replace him with Anasta in origin, now that is saying something, sure bird is a great second row/ lock, but as a playmaker in first grade, i dont think he cuts it. Although Ive heard he was a great 5/8 in schoolboys.

As for wingers not bieng of exceptional quality, what about Jarryd Hayne in Origin? he has got to be one of the most exciting players Ive seen.

I think you definitely have to rate Bird as a playmaker, not in the mould of a Prince or Thurston however. He can bust the line with strength or footwork, can offload and has a kicking game. If he's not a playmaker, what is he?

Ive always viewed him as a second rower, playing in the number 12 or 13 jerseys, splitting lines and off loading with good runs, making great meters. I saw noddy and buster as our play makers.

Is Darius Boyd a winger? I`d say he`d be in the two fifties at least.

bird is a great playmaker, and the only people who wanted anasta anywhere near origin was phil gould and willie mason

dont forget 95er who wishes he could marry anasta and have his kids

bird is a playmaker in his own right, he can make something out of nothing, he may not be a johns or JT or lockyer but he can certainly pull something out of his bag to turn the game for us

find him innocent and get him back in the team

Agreed bird can make somthing out of nothing, he can throw some great passes and has a good crosfeild\bomb kicking game. remember last year against the roosters he but up a nice cross feild bomb for simmons to score under the post.

Almost forgot about Williams as for him i think hed be worth $140-$180 possible $200 if some stupid club desides to pay that much.
Probally end up Signing with Raiders to replace Best or somthing

Bird is more of an old school play maker. A big, strong runner with a solid, selective passing game and a bit of a kicking game. Something like Wally Lewis, and nothing like the 'modern' play makers like Thurston, Lockyer & Prince. It wouldn't be ideal to have Bird as a first choice half, but you'd take a ball playing lock over the standard hit 'em up lock any day. The 3rd (or 4th depending on your hooker) option he provides from the back of the scrum is where he comes into his own. You know every lock can run and hit it up, maybe get an offload away, but it really keeps the defense guessing if they might have to contend with him identifying an opportunity and laying on a short kick or selective pass, and these opportunities are more likely to open up considering the amount of defenders Bird attracts with his running. If 4 blokes are numbering up on him, someone else has to have some part of daylight in front of them.

No dobut wingers and centres are probably some of the most exciting players on the paddock. But unless they're something special like Inglis, more often than not their opportunity to show off their abilities is created by the men further in field, and if those guys in field aren't opening things up outwide, it doesn't matter how good the winger is, he can't post points without the footy and a bit of space. Gasnier was a perfect example with the Saints for the early part of 2008; there seemed to be the mindset of if they just push it up the field a bit with one off the ruck garbage and then swing it out to Gaz he'll do the rest. But he'd get the ball with 2 or 3 defenders breathing down his neck and he'd have nowhere to go.

Same with Queensland's Origin side. They've got a spectacular back line, but as we seen in game one of 2008, they're not worth sh!t if the forwards are dominated and the halves themselves don't have room to create room out wide.

With the Sharks of the past two seasons, it wouldn't make much difference who you had on the wings. They either rarely see the ball, or get it with nowhere to go. Until this changes (hopefully with the new halves combo and back row in 2009) we might as well save money and keep developing the average finishers, maybe if we see a few tries go begging cause they don't have the pace or skill to find the line then we can consider paying good money for a classy finisher.
