On paper, it looms as a volatile meeting. Former Wests Tigers captain Mark O'Neill has been named alongside Danny Williams for English Super League club Leeds' Boxing Day clash against Wakefield at Headingley.

Peachey - sacked by Wigan

Promotion-chasing Widnes have sacked Australian full-back David Peachey less than halfway through his two-year contract.

The former Kangaroo tourist, who joined the relegated Vikings last summer after spending 12 years with Cronulla Sharks, was dismissed after taking a second trip home to attend to his ill stepfather.

Widnes chairman Stephen Vaughan said: "We have terminated David Peachey's contract in full.

"We understand his position with his sick stepfather but I want David Peachey on the field. No one player is bigger than this club.

"There are going to be a lot of unpopular decisions that are going to happen at this club in the next few months and this may allow us to bring new faces in."

Widnes were expected to make a quick return to Super League under new coach Steve McCormack, but have already lost to fellow relegated side Leigh in the first month of the National League campaign and were hammered 54-12 by the Centurions in the Northern Rail Cup last Sunday.

The Vikings take on League leaders Hull KR at the Halton Stadium on Sunday and a week later meet Catalans Dragons in the fifth round of the Powergen Challenge Cup.

Former Cronulla captain David Peachey is adamant his rugby league career is far from over despite being sacked by English division one club Widnes.

Peachey was dismissed after taking a second trip home to Dubbo in regional NSW to attend to his ill stepfather, with Vikings chairman Stephen Vaughan declaring the fullback's axing was in the "best interest of the club".

However the enigmatic 32-year-old said the setback was not the end of his career and vowed to do whatever necessary to remain in the game.

"I'm at the stage where I'm in a bit of a hurdle, a little bit of a brick wall," Peachey said.

"This is a fence I'm willing to climb, jump, leap or fly over and get back into it.

"It's unfortunate with what's happened but I'll deal with it once my lawyers and management have gotten back to me.

"I need to take compassionate leave and do what I need to do in Dubbo then deal with the business side of things.

"I said at the Sharks I felt I had a couple of good years left and obviously they were heading in another direction.

"That was why I signed with Widnes, I feel like I still have a few good years to go."

Peachey hasn't given up hope of a return to the Vikings, but couldn't elaborate due to legal reasons.

"I haven't spoken to the club so I really can't comment on that because I don't know where I stand at the moment," he said.

"I've got people on that."

Asked about a possible return to the NRL, Peachey said: "It's in the back of my mind but I've got far bigger things to attend to now in Dubbo.

"I'll leave that up to my managers but we've got a few things to sort out.

"I've still got a two-year (United Kingdom) working Visa so I don't see why I'd throw that away.

"There's still a lot of football clubs over there and obviously I'd love to be able to get into a Super League club now."

The veteran custodian added he had enjoyed his time in the UK.

Sydney Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan ruled out offering Peachey a short-term contract to replace injured No.1 Anthony Minichiello (back), who is out for six to eight weeks.

Likewise, Sharks boss Greg Pierce said a homecoming was unlikely should Peachey not return to England.

And Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said: "I've only just heard about it, so I couldn't really comment on him coming here."

Meanwhile, Bulldogs utility Reni Maitua has been fined $15,000 by the NRL club after being charged for high-range drink-driving on Anzac Day.

Maitua, a P-plater, returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.165 when pulled over for a random breath test at Cronulla after a drinking session with teammates.

The 23-year-old, who is off contract at the end of the season, will have half of the fine suspended pending possible further breaches.

He has also been enrolled in an alcohol awareness program and participate in community service.

"This has been a massive wake-up call for me and I understand the club had to impose a substantial penalty," Maitua said.

And the Gold Coast Titans are expected to table a formal offer to Penrith's Luke Swain next week.

South Sydney has revived the NRL career of David Peachey, signing the former Cronulla fullback for the remainder of the 2006 season.

Peachey was on the lookout for a new club after being sacked by English division one club Widnes mid-season following a second mercy dash back to Australia to be with his ill step-father.

The enigmatic 32-year-old, a veteran of 12 seasons and 232 first grade games for the Sharks, will commence training with the club this week and should be available for the Rabbitohs' trip to Canberra on Saturday night.

"I'm very excited to be joining the club and to have the opportunity to play in the NRL again," Peachey said in a statement released by the Rabbitohs today.

"People have said that Souths are resurrecting my career and I'm willing to repay them in any way, shape or form for that opportunity."

Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson was pleased to add someone of Peachey's experience to the struggling club.

"David is a quality human being and will be an asset to our club," Richardson said.

"His experience both on and off the field will be invaluable to us."

Peachey Set For Exit Door

PEACHEY HEADS TO SYDNEY

Australian full-back David Peachey, sacked by Widnes earlier this month, has joined South Sydney for the rest of the season.

And that will create space on the Vikings overseas quota to enable them to make a move for former London Broncos scrum-half Dennis Moran.

Moran was released by Wigan last week to make way for the signing of scrum-half Michael Dobson and is thought to have held talks with Widnes coach Steve McCormack.

But the National League club are only allowed one overseas player and needed to remove Peachey from their register. That is expected to be done tomorrow when the Rugby Football League re-open for business after the Bank Holiday.

The 32-year-old Peachey, whose two-year contract with the Vikings was terminated after he returned to Australia to visit his sick father, is to begin training with Souths this week after agreeing terms.

"I'm very excited to be joining the club and to have the opportunity to play in the NRL again," he said.

"People have said that Souths are resurrecting my career and I'm willing to repay them in any way, shape or form for that opportunity."

Peachey, a former New South Wales and Australian Super League full-back, made 232 appearances in 12 seasons for Cronulla Sharks before heading to England in the winter.

Moran, a former Parramatta player, is keen to stay in England and, although he has also been linked with National League Two club Celtic Crusaders, Widnes are favourites to clinch his signature.

McCormack said: "We are monitoring the situation. We are always on the look-out for quality players and Dennis Moran is obviously a quality player."

Peachey in for Souths
7:31AM May 31, 2006

Just one training session was enough to convince embattled South Sydney coach Shaun McRae that David Peachey was ready for a return to the NRL with the former Cronulla stalwart rushed into the Rabbitohs line-up for Saturday night's trip to Canberra.

Peachey, a veteran of 232 games over 12 season with the Sharks, was sacked by English division one club Widnes earlier this month after flying home to be with his ailing step-father.

Now he will make his Rabbitohs debut, just five days after being handed a lifeline by the club, with McRae saying he saw little benefit in easing the former NSW and Australian custodian into the fold.

"I don't see the point in signing players like this and not playing them straight away," said McRae, who has come under fire following the club's 0-11 start to the season.

"The level that he's played at and the number of games he's played in the NRL I think warrant automatic selection.

"He's got great attacking flair, he's got tremendous skills and he's got great anticipation, it's something that at the back there we haven't quite had.

McRae said he was unconcerned by Peachey's three week layoff since his last match with Widnes, or his lack of preparation time with his new teammates, some of whom he met on Tuesday for the first time.

"He'll end up doing three sessions with the club before playing, I think that's going to be just fine for him," McRae said.

"He's been out of the game for three weeks. If I had a player that was out suspended or was out injured for three of that experience you'd probably bring them back into first grade."

His experience and class will be a valuable asset for the Bunnies, particularly with fellow veteran Adam McDougall stood down for the clash with the Raiders after publicly criticising his teammates on the weekend.

NRL bottom side South Sydney has re-signed former Cronulla fullback David Peachey for the 2007 season.

Peachey joined the Rabbitohs in May this year after an ill-fated stint in England.

"David has brought a maturity and calmness to our side and has provided great direction for the younger players, both on and off the field," Rabbitohs chief Shane Richardson said.

Peachey added: "I said when I left for the UK last year that I thought I had two more seasons left in the NRL and the Rabbitohs have given me the opportunity to prove that."

Peachey leads Rabbitohs out of the wilderness

The Rabbitoh’s talented Aboriginal fullback, David Peachey, was cause for admiration on Sunday after he almost single-handedly conjured up a stunning upset win over NRL high flyer St George Illawarra.

The former Cronulla player has been a breath of fresh air since arriving at Redfern in late May, his infectious confidence rubbing off on his teammates who have started playing with more purpose over the last month.

Peachey set up three of his side’s five tries in the weekend’s 38-28 loss, while a tip-toeing effort near the touchline almost led to one of the tries of the season, only for hooker Stuart Webb to be held up over the line.
The 32-year-old left a lasting impression on Dragons coach Nathan Brown, who slammed those who criticised Souths for taking on Peachey when he was sacked by English Division One club Widnes.

“We stood off Peach a little bit and he sort of mesmerized us a fair bit today,” Brown said.
“He’s a terrific player - a lot of people get critical of people signing old players but it doesn’t matter how old you are if you’re still a good player.”

After setting up Nathan Merritt for his side’s opening four-pointer with a clever grubber, Peachey showed great strength and his well-known evasive skills to put Webb over with a dazzling run near the Dragons line.

But he saved his best for last, leaping high above Dragons opposite Clint Greenshields to reel in a Ben Walker bomb before sending Paul Mellor away for a try.
“I enjoy playing the Dragons, I guess it goes back to that Sharks-Dragons rivalry,” Peachey said.

“I’m just really enjoying playing, I’ve got a new contract now so I’m going to be here for a while.
“We were right in the game today, a little bit of individual brilliance from a couple of Dragons players, they were too good for us in the end.”

Peachey has signed a new deal with the club which will see him remain in the red and green until the end of next season.

A Sideline Glance
Issue 109 - 13 Jul 2006
with Ken Rowsthorne Esq.

Let's celebrate the return of "The Peach"

For 13 years David Peachey starred for the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks and I mean starred. Some of his performances during that period of time were magnetic, his ability to envisage what was going to happen in periods of general play, his ability to realise what lay ahead, was a gift of nature.

Here one could coin a phrase "Look out, here comes The Peach" and add to it "with a ton of euphoria". I feel that aptly describes this magnificent footballer.

For some unknown reasons David Peachey was cut from The Sharks last year despite the fact he was playing classy football and also what he had given to the club over the years was passed by without thought or detail.

He signed to play Rugby League in England but unfortunately sickness in his family back in Australia forced his hand and he eventually returned.

He then came to an agreement with Souths to play out this year with the club. His great team performances to date with Souths cemented a contract for the 2007 season. He will play alongside some other Indigenous talent, including Dean Widders who is also an exceptional player and has the air and grace of great ability. The best is yet to come with this Indigenous great.

2007 is coming close to 100 years of Rugby League in Australia. March 7, 1908 was the first official game played and the great club of South Sydney was in there boots and all.

David Peachey has a lot to offer and he's out to prove that. The downturns in his life, those experiences, have made him a better person. Defeatism is not in his kit. Determination and his athletics gifts will surely be a decisive factor in the re-emergence of Souths.

His experience will be the backdrop to the fightback by Souths and along with the other signings they will consummate a joint venture where we will once again see the glory days return for one of the oldest clubs in the NRL.

It's a scenario, a story, yet to be told. But it will be told where we will hear once again the roar of the crowd "Up the Rabbitohs". So when the scrum goes down and the ball goes in, I'll see you there.

Was letting David Peachey go a mistake

I heard it lastnight and it got me thinking, was letting a 32 year old David Peachey go and signing a 30 year old darren Albert a mistake, was this another stupid decision by cronulla. I thought letting David Peachey go was a decision that had to be done but i think now maybe we should of kept him a tad longer. Yea Albert is quicker but i tell you, Peachey as a player has a great sense for rugby league, you have all seen him for souths, we could of used his attack and sense this year and maybe next.

thats bull.
peachey had lost his spark over the last two years and had been playing like crap.
he just wasn't injecting himself like he used to (and is now).
just like thommo, i think it got stale for him and he needed to get shafted to fire him back up again.
it was good of us to get rid of him and good for him and souths too by the looks of things.
besides, how much longer did you think simmo would sit in the queue before he wanted to jump ship?

Souths have lost more games with Peach in the team than they have won. It would have been no different if he was still a Shark - and we would still be complaining that he wasn't doing enough. He has a point to prove.... good luck to him. He's shining in a team that is coming last - not hard. As for Albert, it just proves that the UK Super League is way below par with the NRL. But he also does not get enough ball.

The style of play was completely different when Peachey was in the team. Although sad, I think it was a positivie move to move on as instead of relying on individual brilliance, they have tried to make it more of a complete team. He also found himself out of position a lot in defence. I miss Peach but I also think that he would have played for the Sharks until he was 40 if they never asked him to leave.

Shark flavoured indeed, but I wouldn't consider having any of them back at Cronulla. The Peach was past his use by date, Vagana we never should have brought, Mellor has never really impressed me and while Merritt can score a try or two big and fast is the way for a winger I reckon, and big Merritt is certainly not.

Just a random thought; most of Merritt's trys were scored in the last few minutes of the games, is this because the other team had already walloped the Bunnies and slacked off in defense?

Mellor had some very fine games for the Bunnies this year playing off the wing.

Personally I would take the Bunnies backline over

Simmons
Albert
Hannah
Pommeroy
Covell.

The peach is well past his use by date, but guess what he is still 10x better than that girl Simmons.

Big and fast does seem to be the current trend, but when they are same size as props and playing 80mins it certainly leaves them vulnerable at the back end of games.

Merritt wasn't the highest try scorer of the year for nothing, he had some fantastic trys, including one pearler with a chip and chase down the sideline.

Vagana did not succeed during in his time with us for a variety of reasons but most can be boiled down to not getting any quality ball from the halves.

Personally I believe next year will be better than any he played for us.
