Following an incident in a Sydney hotel last Saturday evening two Sharks contracted players have been severely reprimanded and fined.

After extensive investigations by the Sharks club, which included the viewing of security video and the interviewing of hotel management and staff, Darren Mapp has been fined a substantial amount for behaviour seen by the Sharks club as being totally unacceptable.

A second player, Luke Harlen, has been fined a lesser amount for minor indiscretions at the same hotel.

These were the only two incidents reported by management which involved Sharks players with several senior players in fact complimented by management and staff of the hotel in question for their cooperation. No official complaint was lodged by the hotel in relation to the reported incidents.

Talent infuses Comets' ranks
12th September 2009

THE Central Comets' 2010 playing ranks are set to be injected with some home-grown talent.

The club is set to announce a host of major signings in coming weeks, led by former Broncos, Canberra, Cronulla and Celtic Crusaders forward Darren Mapp.

The St Brendan's College product will be a welcome addition to Wayne Barnett's pack next season, along with the return of Broncos under-20s players Guy Ford and Brent Williams.

The Comets have also snared former Rockhampton junior Tim Glasby from the Penrith Panthers.

In more good news for the club, big front-rower Aaron Summers will spend the off-season with NRL feeder-club Brisbane.

Summers enjoyed a bumper debut season for the Comets which included Country and Queensland Residents selection.

The Comets' UK import Ian Webster is set for a busy off-season with three internationals for Wales, starting next month. Webster will tackle England, Serbia and Ireland in the European Cup.

Summers and Webster are just two players expected to shine at the Comets' annual awards ceremony at the Rockhampton Leagues Club next Friday night.

Utility Tyron Haynes will be aiming to claim back-to-back player of the year awards. Other major awards to be presented are players' player, best forward, best back, clubman of the year and rookie of the year.

Comets can put faith in Mapp for success

Former NRL player Darren Mapp will fit right in to the Comets’ colours next season. MEGAN LEWIS Ml

If there is anyone who is going to lead the Central Comets to victory next year, bets on it’ll be Darren Mapp.

He has played the fields with Brisbane Broncos and Canberra Radars, swept the shores of Wales with the Celtic Crusaders, and now over a decade later Mapp returned home to Rockhampton.

The 29-year-old shows no regrets of his high profile career moves and only looks forward to his new start back in his old home town, where he stands proud with the Central Comets.

After the Comets’ impressive 2009 season of making it to the finals of the Queensland Cup for the first time, there is no mistake that Mapp can only add to the already prominent and growing strength of the club.

The second row centre player, who started throwing the ball around with local school team at St Brendan’s College, gained a scholarship with the Brisbane Broncos when he was just 15 that saw him eventually play in their NRL team.

After brushing his skills up with the Canberra Raiders and the Cornella Sharks he then played for the Celtic Crusaders but was deported along with former North Queensland Cowboy’s players Josh Hannay and Mark Dalle-Cort (second-tier team).

But Mapp, who returned not two months ago, sees it all as a blessing in disguise.

“We had visa problems and then we were deported. We had to basically pack up our whole life in 18 days and leave the UK,” he said.

“But I am happy to be back, I was a bit angry for what happened but I have moved on and am looking forward to the prospect of my future with the Comets.

“They have done so well and I didn’t really want to go anywhere else (except Rockhampton), because I am from here and it is good to be back home.”

With the 2010 season approaching and the Comets already hard at training, there is the call of a captain to be announced.

And leading a team to victory and strength is something that Mapp was quite familiar with when he was captain of the Crusaders in Wales.

“I had a leadership role over in the UK and I really enjoyed it,” he said.

With the tie between the Brisbane Broncos and the Central Comets there may be a future for the rugby star to get back into the NRL team.

“It would be nice (to play for the Broncos) but my main goal right now is with the Comets.”

The Comets kick their pre-season off next year with three tight weekends starting on February 13.

Mapp will take the field against the Mackay Cutters as the curtain-raiser game for his former team, the Brisbane Broncos, who face 2009 NRL champions Melbourne Storm at Browne Park.

“We have been training really hard, and I am really looking forward to getting back into it and start playing,” he said.
