Sharkies....what do you think about this, especially Ricky's comments about our lack of depth??

Daily Telegrapgh 05 March 2008

"SHARKS coach Ricky Stuart says Cronulla fans should not be alarmed about their inconsistent preseason form, but admits he is concerned with their lack of depth heading into the NRL season.
The Sharks surrendered a 20 point second-half lead to Newcastle in their 26-24 trial loss in Cessnock last night, the result following last week's 44-0 shut-out at the hands of South Sydney.

The Australian Test coach isn't concerned with the results, but rather the lack of depth the two games exposed for the Shire club.

Stuart played mostly a second-string outfit against the Rabbitohs, while his regular first graders had scored five tries to one in the first 45 minutes over the Knights before they were rested.

Skipper Paul Gallen made a successful return from injury, playing most of the first-half before he was replaced with the Sharks up 24-4 early in the second-half.

While the Sharks best 17 showed promising sides, Stuart can't overlook the fact his fringe first graders have conceded 66 points in one and a half games of football.

"Our depth is something we have to improve at this club, I don't make any excuses for that but it's certainly something at this club that we have to keep working at," he said.

"When we've got our healthiest, fresh team on there we're obviously confident and it's my job to keep working on the fringe players to get them up to first-grade."

Stuart said he was satisfied with the workout given to his top players against the Knights, resting them to avoid risking injury two weeks out from their round one clash with Manly at Brookvale Oval.

"(The trial) certainly served its purpose, we got our main squad some good footy for 50 minutes," said Stuart.

"It was five tries to one at half-time and I was very happy with that.

"It wasn't going to prove anything to me by having the nucleus of the team that is going to be playing game one for anymore (minutes) than what I had to.

"I achieved what I was after tonight in the first-half and basically got out of there."

Like Stuart, Knights coach Brian Smith was also left with some concerns from their final trial match.

While Newcastle are undefeated in the preseason - they came-from-behind to beat New Zealand Warriors two weeks ago - early defensive lapses have not been forgotten.

Newcastle were the worst defensive team in the NRL last season, conceding 708 points, and it's an area Smith knows needs immediate addressing.

"I'm not sure if we got questions or answers tonight," Smith said.

"(We) probably got a few answers but we've certainly still got some questions and some issues yet but I think every team has at this time of year and we'll try to get across them in two weeks time."

I have had plenty of my mates who follow other teams ring me up and give me heaps that the Sharks have lost two trials and must be favourite for the wooden spoon.

Sometimes I can't believe how little they have up top and that they're my mates! On the other hand they are Dragon and Manly fans so what do you expect.

On the article on Ricky and our depth and I agree with his concern. We have always seem to lack depth and it looks like this year will be no exception. As I have said in previous posts, I feel we will have a good year this year maybe bottom half of the 8 but it is going to be in 2009 where we are going to be a Grand Final side. Ricky has spent quite a while getting the facilities, coaching staff and training programs all up to scratch and has now put his stamp on the place. He now needs to be able to hone the side this year and give all the new guys as much game time as possible so that we do have better depth than in previous years. We now have a good CEO on board as well - his record is very good with the Eels - and if we do have a good season in 2008 we should be able to attract some good players.

Looking through our side I don't think we have enough game breakers. Kearney is one if he stays healthy but we don't have any others. Bird & Gallen are great players but I'm not sure you could put them in the "game breaker" category. They are tough, no nonsense players who can do great things but they are not game breakers. The top sides have several game breakers, for example, the Storm have Slater, Folau, Inglis, Cameron Smith and their coach Bellamy, Parra have Hayne, Inu, Mateo, Grothe and Cayless and when Finch and Tim Smith are in form they also can turn games. The Bulldogs, Broncos, Roosters and Cowboys have their game breakers too.

I've left Noddy out of our game breaker list as I believe his best years are behind them. I think he is still a good player and he can help the young guys but he's past his best and Ricky will soon need to make tough decisions with Noddy.

So, I agree with Ricky that our depth is a worry but the fact that he recognises this is good and hopefully he will be able to do something about it in the long term.

When I first looked at the draw for the first five games of the season I really thought we would struggle to get any points at all. Now I think only the Melbourne game may be beyond us. With the personnel that the Sea Eagles lost we have a big chance to win this game and the Rabbits and the Dragons weren't all that impressive in the Charity Shield. I think the Titans will struggle this year and we should beat them even at their new stadium.

So Sharks fans, I'm looking forward to a successful season - top 8 for sure and a good platform laid for 2009.

:cheers

Sorry mate but I don't share the same view as you do with these players, and this is coming from a mate of Tim Smith also!

Yes Poms - I did deliberate a bit over these guys - I'm willing to concede but you'd have to agree about Inu, Hayne and Mateo wouldn't you?

Do you agree with the rest of my post?

Welcome to Emu Plains, please be sure to visit our
would it help our depth problem if we also hooked up with a QLD cup team and acouple more footy schools besides endeavour sports high to have as our feeder schools..because we dont get that many from ESH because other teams take kids from there as well..

Sorry for the late reply Chad.

Yeah mate it looks pretty good, I probably wouldn't have Feleti as a gamebreaker, but I do know where your coming from suggesting that. He does possess the ability and attacking flair to make a play out of nothing. :cheers

RE QLD Cup team wouldn't hurt, though I'd assume their would be a cost involved, and then it'd come down to if we as a club can afford that association with them and if so would it be worth it (quality of the players up there and the most important the quality of the younger players coming through). About the schools peach alot of the top teir schools are scattered with representative players from more than the one club. So being linked to a school probably wouldn't be worth it, though having contacts within the school for our club would be very handy. I think it would just be better sending our scouts around different school games and getting a good judgement of the best players in each age group including schools from rural country areas, QLD schools, NZ schools and even Union specialist schools wouldn't hurt.

Ah gee some people can only ever think in a negative way. Just because Stuart has come out and said this doesn't mean too much to me, he is simply letting those "fringe" first graders know that they need to lift their game.
Remember we still had a number of regular first graders out for these trails so there was already some Fringe players on the field when we were up 24 - 4. Our reserve grade strength side then took over against a mainly first grade side, ah who wouldnt expect souths to come back.
Lets stay positive here please people, we have a decent amount of depth at our club, yeah we could use more, but we are better off than some other clubs surely. Not only do we have depth, we also have options. Options of where best to play certain players against certain teams.

I for one am excited and can't wait to get a Win in round 1 against Manly

Bring on Season 2008

Hey,
Yeah well if they are they aren't showing it.
I wanna see fans that are positive no matter what
Isn't that what the shire is about? Sticking together.
Im moving there at the end of the year just so I can go to more games and see my team play more often. I dont wanna see a bunch of fans that dont stick by their team. No matter what the press says
