Cronulla Expect No Decision
Greg Prichard
February 25, 2011

CRONULLA are prepared to wait until the Newcastle ownership issue is sorted out before star prop Kade Snowden tells the club whether he is going to remain at the Sharks next season.

But it appears certain that if Nathan Tinkler gets control of the Knights then the Sharks will have waited in vain, because the Herald understands that if the takeover goes ahead, Cronulla have no chance of keeping Snowden, and he will sign a long-term deal with Newcastle.

Snowden is contracted to the Sharks for this season, and will see that out. Their preparation for the start of the premiership continues with, coincidentally, a trial game against Newcastle at Muswellbrook tomorrow.

Cronulla are in an unfortunate position. Last week they trumpeted that Snowden had agreed to terms on a new deal, but he did not sign a contract after Tinkler contacted him personally and asked him to hold off. Snowden is critical to Cronulla's long-term plans, hence the decision by the Sharks to wait for as long as it takes in the hope of keeping him beyond this year.

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said yesterday the club was taking a realistic approach to the situation.

''We won't be doing anything for a month or so,'' Flanagan said. ''Nothing will happen at Newcastle for a month, so we will just let it unfold and go from there. I don't know if he [Tinkler] is going to get the club, but we are obviously going to find out in due course. We can whinge and moan about the situation, but there's not much point in that. It's out of our control.''

With each day that goes by without Snowden re-signing with the Sharks, it obviously looks more and more unlikely that he will stay. Last Sunday, both Flanagan and Sharks chairman Damian Irvine told the Herald they expected the situation with Snowden and Cronulla to be worked out within a few days, but that obviously hasn't happened. The best thing that can happen for the Sharks now is Tinkler not getting control of the Knights.

Irvine said yesterday: ''We're not going to force the issue. We won't be withdrawing the offer. We're going to wait, and the team will prepare for the premiership in the meantime.''

Newcastle's administration said it had ceased negotiations with Snowden because the club no longer had room under the salary cap. If Tinkler takes over it, appears he is prepared to have a new administration cut some players for next year to make room for Snowden and possibly other big-name buys.

They better be focusing on other recruitment then

They better be focusing on the fact that our season kicks off in just over two weeks time!

This is the bit that annoys me most out of all this current situation. Rather than getting excited about season 2011 and looking forward to seeing some good footy and the Mighty Mighties silencing the critics with some great performaces on the field, we're caught up with some fat, brattish megalomaniac and his bizarre, renegade behaviour.

Real footy is back real soon... I'm excited!

Talk to the club and tell them to sort it out fitz and we will get back to talking about footy.

I like how when its not looking good for the club you post about ignoring whats going on with tinkler but when tinkler starts looking like a prick you post about it yourself - balance, objectivity.

Another month!! We are holding ourselves to ransom on this, truly do you think Kades head is on footy alone? And hes a player, how can ours be solely on footy. Reality is a hard pill to swallow - tell me how this makes sense, now. Why dont we just not sign him until the end of the season in case another team comes along with the same amount of money.

It was an out that we had, as tinklers deal was not through with the knights, we could use the question mark of that to give a justified reason to say "we need an answer Kade", so we can plan for the future and start looking into a replacement to go forward if he leaves. And at the present time we had logic on our side as the deal was up in the air but now we wait and see if the knights deal goes through to know what Kades decision is.

This is a mistake.

We are now past the Anderson stage, Kimmorley stage, Stuart stage so this is exciting for us now, and then we have this on the eve of a new era for us.

Its our first real test with a near full strength team under a new coach with money in the bank. Its only fair on the club and fans that this gets sorted out - its dragged on for too long.

i think this is a silly move, as the tickler deal goes ahead we will lose snowden. At the moment there is a element of doubt which could be used to our advantage to get the deal done now.
we do not have to be real forceful either just say as we are not sure if you are re signing or not so we are going to move on to re signing & looking at recuirnment. you are a big part of our plans but if you do not resign soon we may not be able to offer the same deal in the future.
