NEW Salford signing Craig Stapleton has been hailed ‘world class’ by a former teammate who is thrilled at the prospect of playing with him again.

Phil Leuluai shared prop forward duties with Stapleton at Aussie giants Cronulla Sharks for 18 months before signing for Salford last month.

Stapleton, aged 28, will join him at the club next season regardless of whether or not the Reds get relegated after penning a two-year contract.

Leuluai said: “I am made up that Craig has agreed to join us and Salford’s fans should feel the same.

“He is a world class player with a lot of experience. Craig is a real workhorse with great go-forward, great footwork and a very solid defence.

“He is smart with the ball and has a good passing game too. In fact, he is pretty much covered in every aspect of the game.

“Craig will be a real asset to the club. He is a player that I really looked up to when he first joined Cronulla.

“Our lockers were right next to each other. We argued a lot but we became really close.

“He is a top bloke. He is a very cheerful character and he is the sort of person who is willing to help you out in any way he can.”

Father of four Australian Stapleton, who has played representative rugby and will meet up with his new teammates at Salford in December, is no stranger to Super League having spent the 2005 season with Leigh.

He made 28 appearances and scored four tries that year and his other former clubs include St George Illawarra, Parramatta Eels and Penrith Panthers.

Salford fought off interest from a number of Super League clubs to secure Stapleton’s signature and they insist that the player ‘will still be happy to join’ should the Reds get relegated this season.

Steve Simms, Salford’s director of football, said: “Craig is a quality player and one of the best front rowers in the NRL. We are fortunate to have signed him and he is a great acquisition to the club.

“He is not one of those 10-minute stint players. He keeps going, he makes good ground and is extremely solid.

why will he still get his money?

Sorry - I meant even though they're being relegated they'll still honour his original contract. So it wont effect the $$$ he originally agreed to. Still more than he was on at the Sharks.

Strange, cause if I'm not mistaken the National League 1 comp (where Salford has been relegated to) has a salary cap of like 400 pound. I dunno Salford's squad but they've been in SL for a bit now and Looloo and Staples wouldn't have come cheap, not to mention any other Aussie players they might have picked up.

I read that a whole heap of players are getting out now they're being relegated. their contracts are null and void and they are free to walk. but they believe stapleton will still join them regardless.

That sucks, we could have done with Stapo for another season I reckon while we get Norrie up to scratch and work Snowden into some good form.

Souths sign prop Stapleton - Ninemsn

Souths sign prop Stapleton

15:35 AEST Jun 10 2010

Depleted South Sydney have signed their second prop this week, drafting journeyman Craig Stapleton into the NRL club's ranks.

The former St George Illawarra, Parramatta, Penrith and Cronulla forward, who also played for two clubs in the UK, will jump straight from the Wollongong competition to the cauldron of Suncorp Stadium this Sunday.

The 31-year-old has been playing with Illawarra club Wests but is likely to be on the Rabbitohs' bench for their clash with Brisbane.

Third-placed Souths are reeling under the weight of injury suspension and representative duty, with nine forwards unavailable.

The latest to be ruled out were in-form hooker Issac Luke, who was suspended for a late hit on North Queensland halfback Johnathan Thurston on Wednesday night, and injured back-rower Eddy Pettybourne (jaw).

They signed another NRL discard, Jaiman Lowe, on Monday to help fill the gap but he is also serving a suspension.

"Craig will add depth to our forward stocks for the rest of 2010 and will help galvanise our forward pack with his tough style of play," Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said in a statement.

"He has a high work-rate and doesn't shirk any of the hard work.

"He has shown he can play at the top level and we're looking forward to having him assist our charge towards the finals this year."

Stapleton played 105 NRL games and 52 English Super League matches after debuting for St George in 1998.

In 2006, he was selected in the 2006 Prime Minister's XIII to play Papua New Guinea and the Kangaroos train-on squad.

He won English club Salford's player of the year award in 2008 and 2009.

Red-headed journeyman finds himself at Redfern to help the Rabbitohs - Sydney Morning Herald

Red-headed journeyman finds himself at Redfern to help the Rabbitohs

WITHIN six hours of finishing a night shift at Wongawilli Colliery near Dapto, Craig Stapleton had signed with South Sydney and was on the training paddock at Redfern Oval preparing for Sunday's match against Brisbane.

''It's all happened so fast, I'm a bit sleep deprived - but for a good reason,'' Stapleton told the Herald. ''I managed to get my sister to drive me to training so I had a bit of a sleep in the car. I think I got about 20 minutes.''

By the time the former Dragons, Eels, Sharks and Panthers prop arrived, the rest of the squad was already training and after receiving a quick tour of the facilities he was joining them.

As Rabbitohs coach John Lang halted the session, former teammate Ben Ross rushed over to shake his hand and there was a round of applause after the players were told Stapleton was joining them for the rest of the season.

Coincidentally, it is the neck injury that threatens Ross's career that has opened the way for Stapleton to revive his NRL career after returning from a stint in England with Salford to play for Wests in Wollongong, coached by his 1999 St George Illawarra grand final captain, Paul McGregor.

With Sam Burgess on international duty for England, Scott Geddes suffering a season-ending knee injury, Eddy Pettybourne having complications with his broken jaw from earlier in the season, hooker Issac Luke suspended and Michael Crocker sidelined indefinitely by hamstring problems, the Rabbitohs forwards stocks are at a season low.

''I knew yesterday that there was an opportunity there but when I got home from work at about 8.30am my manager said they were deciding between three of us so I still didn't find out until a bit later,'' Stapleton said. ''It's a good opportunity so I want to make the most of it and hopefully I'll get a longer contract.''

Even if Stapleton, who has taken leave from his job in the mines, not been recruited for Sunday's match against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium, he already had a trip booked to Brisbane next week to play for NSW Country in the curtain-raiser to Origin II. ''I'd been enjoying playing at Wests. Mary [McGregor] has been good to play under, he is pretty serious and we had a good team,'' he said.

Lang said the 31-year-old was a welcome addition to the Rabbitohs roster. ''Stapo was probably going to finish his career in Wollongong but it is a good opportunity for him to play with an NRL side that is travelling pretty well,'' Lang said.

Souths are Stapleton's fifth NRL club after debuting with the Dragons in 1998 and he was selected in the 2006 Prime Minister's XIII to play Papua New Guinea and the Australian Kangaroos train on squad.

In his two seasons in England, he won Salford's 2008 and 2009 player of the year award. "Craig will add depth to our forward stocks for the rest of 2010 and will help galvanise our forward pack with his tough style of play," Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson said.

"He has a high work rate and doesn't shirk any of the hard work. He has shown he can play at the top level and we're looking forward to having him assist our charge towards the finals this year."

Rabbitohs' insurance policy can pay off

Rabbitohs' insurance policy can pay off
Steve Gee
August 06, 2010 12:00AM

THEY were plucked from the scrapheap as insurance policies for under $100,000 each.

Now, unheralded Souths forwards Jaiman Lowe and Craig Stapleton will carry the Rabbitohs' finals hopes when they face Wests Tigers in tomorrow night's encounter at ANZ Stadium.

With star recruits Dave Taylor and Sam Burgess leading more than $1 million in playing talent sidelined with injury and suspension, Lowe and Stapleton were yesterday named in the Rabbitohs 17 for the first time together as the Bunnies look to get their finals campaign back on track.

It's a double selection that was never on the radar when Lowe moved to Cairns to play for the the Cowboys' feeder club, while Stapleton was resigned to working in the coal mines and playing park football in Wollongong after returning from two years in UK Super League.

And Lowe's call-up was made all the sweeter, with the 27-year-old to play his 100th NRL game alongside brother and Souths lock Ben.

It's a milestone he felt would never materialise after linking with the Cowboys last year and missing a full-time contract this season.

Now he has his heart set on helping the Rabbitohs qualify for the finals and playing in his first September football in nine seasons of NRL.

"I pretty much thought that was it, so to be given this chance and play in my 100th game is as good as it gets," said Lowe, who left his wife Letisha and daughters, Jordan, 5, and Dakotah, 2, in Cairns, to link with the Bunnies in early June.

"I've never played in the finals so that's one of the itches I haven't scratched in my career.

"I was at the Cowboys when they made the grand final [2005] and missed out, and I was at Souths when they made the finals for the first time in 30 years [2007] and I missed that, so it would be good to make the finals."

Aside from Taylor and Burgess, the Rabbitohs are also missing big guns Michael Crocker, Luke Stuart and Scott Geddes.

Crocker and Geddes are expected to be fit by the final round should the Bunnies still be in contention for the eight, and Lowe says it's up to the fill-in to lift, starting with the Tigers.

"There's a lot of guys on the weekend who have been given an opportunity and hopefully we all band together and take it with both hands," Lowe said.

"I'm not going out there to be Sam Burgess but I'm confident I can do a job."

For Stapleton, who played for the Dragons, Parramatta, Penrith, Cronulla and UK Super League, the call-up was even more unlikely.

The 31-year-old was playing for Wests in the Illawarra league and working in the coal mines at Dapto, where he still does one shift a week.

But like Lowe, the father-of-three is desperate to make the most of the chance.

"I never thought I'd be here, so I just want to make the most of it and enjoy myself," he said.
