Ahh City v Country. The bringing together of 34 losers from which an ultimate team of 17 losers is selected.

I love City v Country. I'd watch it over the Test match anyday. The games are usually tough and entertaining and you get a really good line on players form and talent.

Douglas, Snowden, Ferguson to be picked for country.

Hasler lashes rep fixture
28/04/2010 8:26 PM
Adam Lucius

Manly coach Des Hasler has questioned the NRL's decision to stage his side's round nine blockbuster against St George Illawarra less than 24 hours after up to 17 players across both clubs slug it out in representative matches.

Hasler says players involved in the Australia-New Zealand Test match in Melbourne or the City-Country clash at Port Macquarie – both set down for May 7 – will arrive back in Sydney just six hours before the Sea Eagles host the Dragons at Brookvale Oval on May 8.

Nine Manly players - Brent Kite (Australia), Anthony Watmough (Australia), Josh Perry (Australia), Jamie Lyon (Australia/Country), Jason King (City), Glenn Stewart (Australia/Country), Michael Robertson (Country) Steve Matai (New Zealand) and Kieran Foran (New Zealand) – are likely to be backing up.

The Dragons could have up to eight stars forced to play twice in two days, with Brett Morris (Australia), Beau Scott (Country), Matt Cooper (Country), Jamie Soward, (Country), Michael Weyman (Country), Ben Creagh (Country), Dean Young (Country) and Jason Nightingale (New Zealand) all in line for rep selection.

The match between two title-chasing clubs could turn into a farce if a raft of players are forced to pull out.

The Sea Eagles believe both they and the Dragons should have been given round nine byes.

Instead clubs with fewer representative players, such as Canberra and Cronulla, have been given that weekend off.

"A Test match and a City-Country match on the same night isn't real good for anybody," Hasler pointed out.

"But they're there and again we ask the players to back up 12 hours later to play again."

"It's not only us, St George are in the same position as well."

"Our players will be getting off a plane at 1.30 to attend a game at 7.30."

"To ask players to back up less than 24 hours to play another game is beyond me (but)
I'm only a coach."

"It's not my position to say scrap this (rep game) or that."

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley sympathises with both clubs but said the workload was unavoidable.

"We have this issue every year," Annesley said.

"Because the Test match and City-Country is played on Friday, we always have games on the Saturday."

"We have already scheduled eight byes that weekend."

"It's obviously not possible to give every team a bye."

"While we fully understand the impact on the players and clubs, it is impossible to avoid it entirely."

This is a bugbear of mine that I've irritated about for years...

Rugby League in Australia in my opinion has to have a pyramid structure with only the very best being selected at the apex to represent their country.

The way I would like to see it...

You have all of these juniors and local Clubs playing park footy. From them, a Rep team is selected which then plays other Rep teams from other localities.

The very best players then get selected to play for the Professional Rugby League Clubs. If you're good enough in your Club, you then might be selected to play for the top grade.

From all of the first grade players, a best NSW City Origin and NSW Country Origin team is selected... from those two teams, you select the NSW Origin Side.

From the SOO you pick the National side.

Yeah, I know it's going back to the past... but I can't for the life of me understand why they changed it. It's just another example as to where the Rugby League Administration has lost the plot.

You've got to get more pride back into earning the jersey above you. I'm sure if players knew that they were competing for higher rep jumpers we would see a better quality of game throughout the sport.

I hear lots of complaint about the number of games the elite players would have to play but I just don't buy that argument at all. Likewise, I get annoyed when players make statements about retiring from rep duties.

And while I'm having a rant... geez it cheeses me off that the NSW Cup is not played directly before the NRL Games - they've completely messed that up! As it stands, you've got the second best competition getting less coverage and crowds attendance than the U/20s. It's lunacy.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

rant over...

Bullseye Fitz, you couldn't have been more spot on if you tried

They also need to bring back the old President's Cup/Reserve grade format

I suppose the Queensland equivalent of City Origin v Country Origin would have to be:

XXXX, Caravan-Park "Centrelinks" v Bundy Rum, Under-a-Tree-in-a-Park-Somewhere "No Teefs"

That is rich coming from a state that has places like Rooty Hill, Blacktown and Cabbramatta. Everyone I know that has moved to QLD from NSW rates it a lot higher than NSW.

Ohh and NSW also has this guy:
