Cooper commits to Dragons

Tuesday has been a day to remember for Matt Cooper, who has re-signed with the Dragons and been named in New South Wales' State of Origin squad.

A veteran of 149 first-grade games since making his debut for St George Illawarra early in the 2000 season, 29-year-old Cooper knocked back offers from several other clubs in committing until the end of 2011 as he looks to retire as a one-club player.

"I have always said that I wanted to be a one-club man and this new contract supports my aim," said the regular Blues and Kangaroos centre, who will next year play under coaching doyen Wayne Bennett.

"The Dragons have been such a big part of my life for many years and I am very happy to continue my career at the club. I feel I still have a lot to offer the club and I see a very bright future here about which I am excited."

"It is a pretty big day for me. Being picked for Origin and knowing that I am staying at the Dragons … I couldn't be happier."

St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust said the club is delighted the Shellharbour Sharks junior will remain on board until well into his 30s.

"Matt is an exceptional player and has been a high quality example of what the Dragons system can produce," Doust said.

"Matt is a popular player among the team, members, partners and supporters so it is great news for everyone that he has elected to stay for a further three years."

i got so excited, i thought it might have been our cooper! i've got no idea; really wish we were able to lure webster when he went to the tits. of course, that was before we had a coach under whom players were keen to play.

The Dragons have a million bucks tied up in their centres and that is their problem.I dont think Cooper was on Ricky,s shopping list.We do need an outside back at the right price who can preferably kick goals.

I wasn't having a shot at you GW. I was just saying the person who told you that mis-informed you, I was actually in a way defending you making that call cos it was incorrect. No hard feelings.:cheers I understand that you tell us what you have heard.

Basically there was a deal agreed to, but he wanted to think it over, obviously went back to the dragons I suppose, and got them to sweeten it, who knows, but he was a serious chance of coming.

I didn't take it personally mate, all good. My source is good, Cooper just chose to stay where he was, just goes to show, they are not over the line till actually signed.

Easy road there, this year anyways. Next year, would be pretty good to be under Bennett though.

Yeah I thought the same thing when i read the title. Cant say i'm that concerned by this, he's a defensive centre anyways, not exactley what we need.
