Man jailed for threatening Sharks boss

A man has been sentenced to at least 14 months jail for making threats to the former boss of the Cronulla Sharks rugby league club.

Clint Leigh Elford, 28, pleaded guilty on February 18 after being charged with sending a document threatening grievous bodily harm.

The charge was laid by police in early July 2009 after warders at Goulburn jail, where Elford was on remand, found a letter addressed to a man with links to the Rebels bikie gang.

The letter, discovered on July 1, 2009, allegedly solicited the bashing of former Sharks boss Tony Zappia.

The letter included Mr Zappia's home address and Elford's desire for him to be "taught a lesson".

At the time Elford - a dedicated Sharks fan - was on remand, charged with obtaining $525,000 through false health insurance claims.

Police allege Elford's fraud offences included falsifying documents from health professionals and using them to substantiate the insurance claim.

It is understood he made charitable donations and gave $30,000 to the Sharks club after talks with Mr Zappia, who has since quit the club.

At Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday, Magistrate Geraldine Beattie sentenced Elford to 20 months prison for the threatening document.

The sentence includes a non-parole period of 14 months and with time already served Elford will be eligible for release on parole on August 15, 2010.

His fraud matters are due for mention at Sydney's Downing Centre District Court on June 9 and are expected to reach sentencing when Goulburn District Court next sits in August.

Wow I can understand getting 20 months if this had been for the frauds... but he should have got a reduction for threatening Zappia. ;)

Yeah but didnt he also attempt to organise it with a bikie gang or something. Whatever it was I remember he did attempt to organise it, which was probably taken into account.

Caged Sharks fan in court - Sydney Morning Herald

Caged Sharks fan in court
Matt Buchanan and Leesha McKenny
August 16, 2010

Yes, they beat the Roosters at the weekend, but it's still not a great time to be a Cronulla Sharks fan. Coach Ricky Stuart has quit, Trent Barrett is retiring. And they continue to languish at the bottom of the NRL ladder. But one Sharks supporter doing it tougher than any is Clint Leigh Elford, who faces languishing somewhere a bit more secure - in prison. The 28-year-old, who donated $30,000 of ill-gotten funds to his beloved team last year, is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to 24 charges related to life insurance fraud. Elford falsely claimed he was terminally ill to receive a $525,000 insurance payout from American International Assurance, and sought another $1.5 million from Allianz Australia Life Insurance. The would-be saviour of the Sharks was arrested moments after meeting the club's board. Well, he has another important meeting today - his case is in Goulburn District Court. As for his ongoing relationship with the team, it may have deteriorated somewhat since his arrest. He was sentenced to at least 14 months jail in May after a letter was discovered in his cell last year allegedly soliciting bikies to bash former Sharks boss Tony Zappia to ''teach him a lesson''.

Well, the first line of that story is a way to put a negative spin on a good weekend.

I find this whole Clint Elford thing more amusing than anything I have to say.

What gives me the poo's is that the headline sounds as if something happened at the game on Friday night.

And once again we have some good vibes from the win and then they come up with headlines like that.

Seriously... Did Matt or Leesha have some money riding on this and are clutching at straws in a bad case of sour grapes?

This story is so old that Moses was in short trousers when it was newsworthy. Just more snide Sharks bashing from the once reputable SMH. This sort of gossip mongering has you stooping even lower than the tabloid piffle of the Daily Telegraph.

It is precisely this sort of peurile nonsense that is the reason I no longer subscribe to your "newspaper"
