there has been a lot of information in the paper last weekend in relation to Cam Smith and him being off contract at the end of 09, the big money offers that are being thrown out by the Titans - then being squashed by Michael Searle as they now look at Robbie Farah and so it goes...

So what does this hold for Cam Smith????

Now i might be speaking out of left field, and yes, he does come at a big price and is that much $$ on a hooker worth it, but do you think that Sticky maybe has something up his sleeve here in order to get Cam Smith to the Shire??

A few pieces of writing are on the wall - Corey Hughes only on a one year deal, the ever continued Ben Ross rumours of us offloading him to free up $$$. Does anyone feel that something could be happening here to set something up for Cam Smith??

Looking forward to your thoughts out there.

Maybe so. Ross has a $400k contract, Hughes roughly $150K? Though if we use the chunk of this on Cam we will end up a little light on front rowers (losing Ross). I know we have Douglas, Snowden, Norrie, Selmes & Mannah. IMO we can rely on Douglas for sure next season, we can hope for more improvement from Snowden, Norrie is a solid FGer (we know what we're getting), Mannah has potential imo though is unproven and Selmes is to sluggish for my liking. So in saying that if we dump Selmes, pickup another hard working prop it probably would be all good actually.

I think Selmes comes off contract after 09/10, hopefully this season. Does anyone know any front rowers coming off contract at seasons end?

Though to give my opinion regarding Cam, I cant see him coming to Cronulla, I think it'll either be Melbourne or somewhere in QLD.

As for backs peach we have Filiga, Wright, Orcher and Stapleton who Stick has brought in to develop into FGers. So maybe give Filiga and Stapleton another year to prove their worth. If they dont improve then maybe look to bring in another outside back. Personally I think Stapleton will head back to union. Filiga has a bucket load of potential, so if he plays to that theres that other centre we have been looking for... If not he'll get sacked and we'll use his $180k contract on another back, probably along with Stapletons.

When is the Ross contract up? if we let him go next year + Hughes that is 550k then if Bird is released we would be able to make a play on either Farrah or Smith and still have money for a outside back and Prop forward

I wonder when Brent Kite is coming off contract?

I agree with bort regarding Farah, I'd rather Farah just for the fact he would probably be like 25% cheaper than Smith. So we could spend that on others.

Also not sure hitman when Kite comes off contract.

Selmes had a good year in '08 & will only get better, just look at Price/Civenoceva, big forwards get better with age, even Ross played better this year than since being a panther! We ok for forwards ,just replace simmons & I'd like to see Misi score some more tries before I'm convinced that wing spot is his.

Farah will be better than Smith. I'd go ape sh!t in an attempt to pick up Farah on a good, long deal because the next one time he's contract is up it'll be a monster.

We're no chance of getting Smith. No one but Melbourne, Titans or Broncos have a chance. He'll either stay with a good thing in Melbourne, or go home to Queensland.

Go for Farah, Sharkies. It would be one of the signings of the decade.

stack most of our salary cap in the engine room and let our younger players run wild in our backline, orcher, bukuya, ferguson, wright, filiga (hopefully) etc etc etc

I actually heard this rumours months ago that we were after a high profile hooker, and with Hughes on for one year, Bird (most likely) getting released and Ross's pay reduced or offloading him we will have atleast or close to 1 million under the cap...
