David Gallop's weekend of shame...

I have always maintained that Rugby League’s ability to shoot itself in the foot is only marginally eclipsed by its’ ability to recover from said shooting … but I’m starting to doubt that now.
On perhaps one of the best semi-final weekends since the high watermark of the early 90’s we managed to add to the pantheon of administrative stuff ups that our great game has become famous for.
We could almost be called the Nationally Ridiculed League.
It started on Friday night when Channel 9 said they didn’t want to play the Warriors v Roosters match live from Auckland because A Current Affair and Two and a half men was on.
Gallop said no – I want it live; Channel 9 said too bad; fans said how come, I thought we had a contract?
The game went on an hour late.
Saturday night featured the Broncos and the Storm in Brisbane. Live in Sydney and Brisbane as you’d expect and considering it involved Melbourne one would have thought a live feed or perhaps a 1 hour delay to allow for the viewing of the AFL.
Nope. Coverage began at 12.10am Sunday morning with a full intro. The action began at half past the hour meaning the winning try hit the tube at around 2.30am. Again, the fans said, how come I thought we had a contract?
And now on Monday morning we have Gallop stifling a sponsorship deal with betting agency Betchoice for the Manly club because it’s in direct competition to the NRL’s exclusive contract with Tabcorp.
The feeling I get from people is that they’ve finished laughing at David Gallop and they now hate him and the NRL.
It seems a contract is worth the paper it is written on when it suits David Gallop, like now, and when Sonny Bill Williams walks out on his club. And when it doesn’t Gallop closes his eyes, puts his hands over his ears and runs around like a child screaming “I’m not listening!”
On the 5th of September, when a real man called Wayne Bennett stood on stage and farewelled the Brisbane crowd, he said a few short words, the most important being: “In my 21 years here, you've been absolutely wonderful. We've always played for you. It was always about the fans, you've been wonderful to the club.”
If only that was true of the NRL…
Whether it be a grapple tackle, the flaws of the salary cap, the lack of money in the game, the issues surrounding broadcasting or the myriad other grievances that we’re not happy with it comes down to one person alone – David Gallop.
As the CEO of the NRL I am confident he is not the man to continue in the job.
His negotiating skills are once again coming firmly into question and he should resign out of respect for the game.
I say again, what does this bloke do?
