Not a Sharks topic, but just heard on Ch 9 that Brian Smith will replace Fittler at the Roosters next year. So who'll coach the Knights?

Joey hates coaching and said he'd never do it... wonder if Harrogan will throw his hat in the ring.

Brian Smith to coach Roosters in 2010

Newcastle coach Brian Smith has sought a release from the Knights to take up an offer to coach the Sydney Roosters from next season.

Smith will replace Brad Fittler at the helm of the Roosters club in 2010, ending his three-year association with the Knights.

The Knights board has to approve the release on Monday, but that appears a formality.

"I don't think Newcastle was ever going to be long-term for Brian," Knights chief executive Steve Burraston told Fox Sports on Saturday night.

"If he had an opportunity to get a pretty substantial position somewhere else for a long period of time, it would be wrong for us to stand in his way I think.

"Brian asked us today if he could have a release so he could take up the position with the Roosters.

"From the chairman's and my point of view, we said we would be recommending to the board on Monday that that be the case, that we do grant him a release.

"In any employment outside of footy, you wouldn't stand in someone's way if they could do something that they wanted to do in their career."

Rumour about Fittler's future at Bondi Junction have swirled for much of the season, given the club's reluctance to enter negotiations to re-sign him.

Smith has taken the Knights from cellar-dwellars to major finals contenders in the space of three seasons, but Newcastle is reportedly willing to release the former Dragons and Parramatta coach from the final year of his contract to join the Roosters.

Fittler's Roosters have fallen from grace dramatically this season, and are languishing at the bottom of the ladder after a top four finish last season.

Burraston said the Roosters had offered Smith a four-year deal, compared to the one season Smith has remaining on his Newcastle contract.

"I would suggest without knowing that it's probably substantially more than we're capable of paying as well and he had family reasons around that as well," Burraston said.

He said the Knights had a number of ideas regarding a possible head coach for next year, including assistants at Newcastle and other clubs.

"We're not short of options, put it that way," he said.

But he played down talk club great Andrew Johns would be the man.

"I don't think Joey would like a full-time coaching career. He has stated that publicly on many occasions that he's not cut out to be a coach," Burraston said.

Burraston said he was more than happy to have Smith as head coach for the remainder of the 2009 season.

"He's a very intense coach and he's a very professional coach," Burraston said.

"Brian will give us everything and he gave me his word on that and said he has got a competition to win here and he firmly believes we will win the competition."

"I don't think Newcastle was ever going to be long-term for Brian"......Steve Burraston, Knights CEO

One of the things Brian Smith is known for in his coaching is bring through juniors - one of the big reason Newcastle went for him and the results have been obvious. This begs the question; why would he go to a Club that has stripped itself of juniors?

I don't mind Brian Smith but I hope he goes horrible at the Chooks. The more I look at that Club the more I despise them. I loved watching them snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this arvo haha never backed a Kiwi mob that hard before.

Brad Fittler looking elsewhere

Brad Fittler looking elsewhere
Updated: 17:54, July 19, 2009

Sacked Sydney Roosters coach Brad Fittler wants to stay in the game but has ruled out working under in-coming boss Brian Smith.

Fittler said he was still digesting his shock axing and would take some time out at the end of the season to consider his future.

The Roosters legend will remain in charge until the end of this season before passing the reins to the experienced Smith from 2010.

Smith shocked the Newcastle camp by walking out on the last year of his contract to take up the Roosters' four-year deal, worth $2.4m.

'There'll be no role at the Roosters,' Fittler told The Sunday Footy Show.

'I've only known for a day so I'll most probably chill out at the end of the season and look at my options.'

'I'll definitely coach in some manner, there's no doubt about that. I really enjoyed it.'

Fittler also told of his disappointed with the club after finding out that the Under 20's trainers knew of his sacking before he did.

'I sat down with Steve Noyce yesterday and he assured me that it was only him, me and Brian Smith that knew. I found out later that the Under 20#8217;s trainer knew before me, so that was really disappointing that part of it,' he told BigPond Sports Weekend on Sunday.

'In regards to how they move you on, it was always going to be difficult given my relationship with the Roosters.'

'Three or four weeks ago I informed my staff that there was a really good chance that I wasn't going to be here next year given how the season has gone #8230; it has been a really poor season on and off the field and the coach has mass responsibilities for both of those areas.'

Despite Fittler's declaration that there is no future for him at his current club, former Roosters coach Phil Gould hopes Smith will find a role for the one of the club's all-time greats.

'He (Smith) indicated to me that he'd like Brad to remain on in some capacity and I hope in time Brad sees fit to do that,' Gould said.

'I think Brian could offer him a lot in the way of experience and education.'

Asked what he thought of Smith's appointment, Gould replied: 'I think it's a great coup for the club ... they've acquired a great coach.'

'I've always been a big admirer of Brian Smith and I think he's the right man for the job.'

Meanwhile, there are already maneuverings behind the scenes as coaches line-up to apply for the soon-to-be-vacant Newcastle job.

Current assistant coach Rick Stone is believed to be the front-runner, while there is also support for assistant Melbourne boss Michael Maguire.

Ricky Stuart's right-hand man at the Sharks - and NSW assistant coach - Shane Flanagan has also been mentioned as a candidate and ex-Manly coach Peter Sharp may be another contender.

Stone anointed as Johns brothers pass on Knights job

THE tantalising prospect of Matthew or Andrew Johns returning to Newcastle to take on the club's vacant coaching job either as individuals or in a partnership has been quashed, with long-serving assistant Rick Stone emerging as a favourite.

While the position has already attracted interest from former Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes and Cronulla and NSW assistant Shane Flanagan, Knights officials might not have to look any further than their own backyard after Andrew Johns and a number of players endorsed born-and-bred Novocastrian Stone to take over the reins from Brian Smith.

"He's been assistant to Michael Hagan and Brian Smith for five years now. He's hugely popular amongst the players. He's done his apprenticeship under those two coaches, and I couldn't endorse him any more. I think he'd be the right man for the job," Johns told The Footy Show.

Johns, who was a key member of the NSW State of Origin coaching staff, and his brother Matthew, a highly regarded tactician, are considered coaches in waiting but, like Peter Sterling, appear destined to spend their non-playing careers informing television viewers of the intricacies of the game after their manager Nick Fordham said neither would seek to coach their old club.

However, Fordham said Knights chief executive Steve Burraston had been advised of the availability of Folkes and Flanagan.

Melbourne Storm assistants Michael Maguire and Stephen Kearney have also been linked to the job but Stone has strong support at board level, while another member of the Knights coaching staff, Trent Robinson will also be considered.

A Lakes United junior, Stone left Newcastle in the late 1980s to join South Sydney and played three first-grade games for the Rabbitohs.

He moved on in his mid-20s to captain-coach Nambucca Heads and then joined Burleigh Bears, where he coached for 13 years, winning three grand finals.

Stone was lured back to Newcastle in 2006 as Hagan's assistant, and has spent the past three years in that capacity under Smith, including one season in charge of the Central Newcastle NSW Cup team.

"I know the players have got a high regard for 'Stoney'," prop Ben Cross said. "He's recognised around the town pretty well and he's got a good culture of clubs that he's been to, with Burleigh and now what he's done here with the defensive side of things."

A quiet achiever, Stone said yesterday he felt capable of coaching at NRL level, if given the opportunity.

"I'd like to think I've served a good apprenticeship," he said. "Four years in the NRL now, and plenty of years in the Queensland Cup, and I've been lucky enough to have 'Smithy' and 'Hages' apply some polish and finish.

"I'd like to think I'd be ready … [but] I'm happy to let the process run its course and see what comes of it."

Robinson, 32, began his coaching career with French club Toulouse after playing stints at Balmain and Parramatta, and he joined Newcastle in 2007.

Former Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes interested in Newcastle Knights job
By Dean Ritchie
July 20, 2009

Premiership-winner Steve Folkes last night became the first high-profile coach to officially declare interest in Newcastle Knights job for 2010.

Contenders will start applying for the Newcastle position vacated by Brian Smith.

Newcastle's board is expected to meet on Monday night to determine whether Smith will be sacked immediately or be allowed to see out the season.

Smith's assistant Rick Stone has support, but it is unlikely Andrew and Matthew Johns would consider going back to coach at their former club.

Others contenders are Folkes, Melbourne Storm assistant coach Michael Maguire, Cronulla, New South Wales and Australia assistant Shane Flanagan and former Dally M coach of the year Graham Murray.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that Folkes is interested in the vacant Knights job.

"Absolutely. It would be a terrific opportunity. I think the value of experience gets a little overlooked at times," he said.

"I think I could go up there and do a good job. Newcastle is a league-mad town and they have a lot of good young players coming through. There have been a few ties between Canterbury and Newcastle over the years - Warren Ryan, Michael Hagan, Mark Sargent have gone between the two clubs."

Murray, who guided the Roosters and North Queensland Cowboys to grand finals, said Newcastle Knights would be a "plum job".

Barrett: Smith's left the Knights in the lurch
July 20, 2009 - 8:58 AM
BigPond Sport

Sharks captain Trent Barrett has questioned the Newcastle Knights ability to find a well credentialed replacement for departing coach Brian Smith.

Barrett told BigPond Sports Weekend, “ I don’t know whether Smithy is leaving Newcastle in the lurch but where are they going to get a coach from, there’s not a hell of a lot of them around.”

“We read about how passionate Brian Smith is about the Newcastle Knights and it has taken him a long time to get the club to where they are now and for him to cut his contract short, is there something else going on there I don’t know but it’s just a bit strange.”

Barrett a good friend and a former teammate of Fittler’s added, “I feel for Freddy, but that aside he is obviously disappointed with the way it has been handled. I think that when you take on a first grade coaching job you know the day is going to come eventually.”

And on possible replacements for Smith Barrett believes Newcastle will look towards some of the assistant coaches already in the NRL, “Shane Flanagan is a good coach, a very good bloke and a great communicator with the players. There is also Stephen Kearney and Michael Maguire at Melbourne who they have big wraps on so I guess they will have to look at someone like that.”
