I have just been watching some old sharks matches from the last 20 years, and just wondering which team of the last 20 years was the bests.

1988 was a very good year for the sharks as well as 97 and 99 but still so close but so far.

Looking at the squad i think the best team had was in 99. A mix of flair experience, pace and strength.

ET was at the end of his career but his expereince was such a guide for players such as rogers, best, howland (go the whippett), peachey.

Dykes was on fire this year his combination with peachey was magical.
Graham at lock was an under-rated but skillful lock who provided a different option in the attach

With hard going forward such as lang, long, stevens, ryan the sharks had such a great balance in their squad.

shame 99 couldnt finish with a premiership.

Which squad do you think was our best of the last 20 years?

2001 was the best for mine. Dykes and Campbell were the best two players in the comp that year and we were unstoppable, until Dykes pulled up lame at training (a la Seymour last year) and after running the team all year had only 2-3 touches in the prelininary final.

After that, in this order ...

1999 (who were the most talented group but 2001 were a better as a team)
2002

2009 on paper, no question. In reality 1999, mind you 2008 did really well!
Best team I have seen 1988!!! what a great year. Only memories now I suppose....

Yeah from memory I liked 2001, but from memory also Rogers was injured a lot of the year.

That team on paper was bloody awesome.

I also liked 2008 before the Bird incident. Great team.

Probably showing my age here, but I would have to agree with those who say 1988! Mainly because the Ettingshausen-McGaw centre combination was absolute dynamite that season, Barry Russell was outstanding at halfback, and Gavin Miller was playing the best football of his career.

Yeah, Mega makes a good point. Those were halcyon days. I can't split that team and 99 when peachey was on absolute fire... 88, 99, write off the noughties, 2011 might be a good year...

I barely remember 1999 (i was only 5)
2001 & 2002 were good years.
But i would have to say 2008 for my generation anyway.

1994 Reserve grade and 1994 under 21s both won the comp that year. I was in north west QLD back then for a while and watched both games on the idiot box.
Mat Rogers 3 tries in the centres was a stand out, I thought then and there he would follow in his old man's foot steps. Well almost.

I enjoyed 99 and 08 for different reasons.

I think the 08 team was one of the toughest we have had (mentally and physically) they were always up for the grind.

But, the 99 team had some absolute class acts. They were much more attacking and exciting. ET, Peachey, Rogers, Dykes, Healey, etc. They also had a strong forward pack Lee Lang Long, Graeme, Triester, Jason Stevens. This was the best team I’ve seen. We were very unlucky not to win that year.

The 08 team did not have the talent of the 99 team but they did have the guts. 88 is a bit early for me to make an educated assessment.
