Speechley, Healey, Dykes, Bird, Barrett... You guys have probably debated this before, but I was just wondering who do you rate as our best ever five-eighth?
We've had some pretty good ones I still remember Speechley and his grass cutting tackles when I was only 6 years old back in '89...

Bird wasn't ever really a five eight and Barrett has only been at this club for half a season so we cant really call them our best five eights. I'd have to go with Speechley at this point. From what i can remember growing up he is better than Healy. And i will never ever admit Dykes to be a good player

Yeah it still kinda sh!ts me about Birdy... what a waste. I was a pretty big Mitch Healey fan, I met him at coaching clinic in north queensland in '92 and i remember a field goal he kicked against North Sydney in 1996 to tie the game... and a game against Manly when he tackled Danny Moore close to the line to save a match winning try and he threw up near the side line.
Then he went and broke that Parra dude's jaw in 2000 :/

So who would you rate the best you've seen? I'm a bit divided myself too... I thought Dykes had heaps of talent but also had a lot of mistakes. Healey was a tough prick.

didnt see much of healey and if i did i was too young to remember, dykes was a good player who had his moments. So out of that lot i would say dykes.
But someone nobody has mentioned was presto, i rekon he was the best we had when he was at 6.

Hell yes Presto was awesome. Thought he played more half-back at Cronulla though... But yeah... totally magical player.

Mitch had some real ability but it would have to be 'lawnmower' Speechley for me. Always thought he was vastly underated as an attacking 5/8 despite being recognised as possibly the best pound for pound defender in the game at that time. A real favourite of my teenage years. I remember ET having a run of games at 5/8 during the 90's when we were struggling there for a little while.

Mitch Healey was good, Dykes flashy somewhat overrated as he couldn't tackle- a fact which led to his downfall.
Best Ever Cronulla five eight i ever saw was BARRY ANDREWS and he was a prolific pointscorer and long range goalkicker!

Yes I was going to mention ET but he only did play a handful of games there when Beetson put him in. It's a toss up for me between Speechley and Healey... I was a huge fan of Speechley when I 1st started watching footy... him, ET, Miller, Wilson, Hatch, Dock, Russell... what a side we had back then!

Too right SharkBoy. That 88 minor premier side was a bloody good team. I'm not saying we would have beaten the Doggies if we'd made it to the grand final but I was absolutely devestated when we lost that prelim. to Balmain. I really felt we deserved to have a crack after the way we'd played that season. Old backdoor Benny got away with a couple of things that game as I remember. :(
