Uate returning to Papua New Guinea in green and gold colours

UNLIKE most of his Australian Prime Minister’s XIII teammates, Knights winger Aku Uate has already played two games at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby.
He scored two tries in each match, but those games – for Fiji against Cook Islands and Tonga in the Pacific Cup last October – have already cost him a Country jersey, probably a NSW one, and delayed his seemingly inevitable rise to the ranks of Australian representative.
One week after being named Dally M winger of the year and being officially acknowledged as the NRL’s top try-scorer this season, Uate was selected yesterday alongside Knights teammate Jarrod Mullen in the Prime Minister’s XIII to play Papua New Guinea on September 26.
Uate said earning his first green-and-gold jersey since he and Mullen represented Australian Schoolboys together in 2005 was comparable to his Fiji Test caps and Dally M award.
‘‘Of course this is pretty big for me,’’ Uate told the Newcastle Herald last night.
‘‘I’ve been there [to Papua New Guinea] before so I know the atmosphere there. It’s crazy, and scary as well, so going with the Prime Minister’s team will be more exciting because it’s a big thing for the people there. They love their rugby league there.’’
Uate has applied to the Rugby League International Federation to change his representative eligibility status from Fijian to Australian. If approved in time, he is expected to be rushed into the Kangaroos squad for the Four Nations tournament that kicks off next month.
‘‘I’ve got no idea what’s going on there. The papers have gone through so I’m letting my managers handle all that,’’ he said.
Mullen represented the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII as a 19-year-old in 2006 but was unable to travel with the rest of the team because his passport had expired, so he had to fly in to Port Moresby on his own on the morning of the game.
‘‘I’ve checked my passport and it’s up to date so I’m ready to go this time. They’ve put a bit of faith in me to pick me again, so I’m very happy about that,’’ said Mullen, who returned to Newcastle yesterday after a Gold Coast holiday with eight Knights teammates.
Though Newcastle missed the finals, Mullen finished the season in fine form and captained the Knights in his 100th NRL game against the Storm in the final round.
‘‘It’s a bit disappointing I didn’t have that form for the whole season but I can take a bit of confidence from that going into next year,’’ he said.
Knights juniors Kade Snowden (Cronulla) and Michael Ennis (Canterbury), who both played for NSW this year, were included in the 18-man squad.
They will assemble at Redfern Oval at 10am today for medical checks and a briefing before travelling to Cairns tomorrow week. They will leave for Port Moresby the following day.
The squad in alphabetical order is: Matt Bowen (Cowboys), Luke Douglas (Sharks), Ennis (Bulldogs), Blake Ferguson (Sharks), Matt Gillett (Broncos), Jason King (Sea Eagles), Micheal Luck (Warriors), James Maloney (Warriors), Tim Mannah (Eels), Mullen (Knights), Corey Parker (c) (Broncos), Chris Sandow (Rabbitohs), Ben Smith (Eels), Snowden (Sharks), David Taylor (Rabbitohs), Willie Tonga (Cowboys), Uate (Knights), Tony Williams (Sea Eagles).
