does anyone actually think that the pm picks the team??

it should be re-named 'australia a' or something like that..

anyway, congrats to dougy ansd snowy...

fergo, well, he can go and get stuffed....

Its not Australia A though. Its like a development side for the national team where they can pick younger blokes and give them a taste of rep footy with a coach like Meninga and reward older blokes with a rep jumper.

NEWCASTLE Knights stars Aku Uate and Jarrod Mullen have been named in the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII to play Papua New Guinea at Port Moresby on September 26.

It will be Fijian-born Uate’s first senior green-and-gold jersey and caps a spectacular season in which the 22-year-old speedster was the NRL’s top try-scorer with 21, and was named Dally M winger of the year last Tuesday.

Mullen, a former NSW State of Origin halfback, has earned his second Prime Minister’s XIII jersey after playing in the corresponding game in 2006.

Knights junior Kade Snowden, who has played for Cronulla for the past three season and made his Origin debut for the Blues in July, was also named in the 17-man squad.

Uate returning to Papua New Guinea in green and gold colours

Uate returning to Papua New Guinea in green and gold colours
15 Sep, 2010 04:00 AM

UNLIKE most of his Australian Prime Minister’s XIII teammates, Knights winger Aku Uate has already played two games at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby.
He scored two tries in each match, but those games – for Fiji against Cook Islands and Tonga in the Pacific Cup last October – have already cost him a Country jersey, probably a NSW one, and delayed his seemingly inevitable rise to the ranks of Australian representative.

One week after being named Dally M winger of the year and being officially acknowledged as the NRL’s top try-scorer this season, Uate was selected yesterday alongside Knights teammate Jarrod Mullen in the Prime Minister’s XIII to play Papua New Guinea on September 26.

Uate said earning his first green-and-gold jersey since he and Mullen represented Australian Schoolboys together in 2005 was comparable to his Fiji Test caps and Dally M award.

‘‘Of course this is pretty big for me,’’ Uate told the Newcastle Herald last night.

‘‘I’ve been there [to Papua New Guinea] before so I know the atmosphere there. It’s crazy, and scary as well, so going with the Prime Minister’s team will be more exciting because it’s a big thing for the people there. They love their rugby league there.’’

Uate has applied to the Rugby League International Federation to change his representative eligibility status from Fijian to Australian. If approved in time, he is expected to be rushed into the Kangaroos squad for the Four Nations tournament that kicks off next month.

‘‘I’ve got no idea what’s going on there. The papers have gone through so I’m letting my managers handle all that,’’ he said.

Mullen represented the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII as a 19-year-old in 2006 but was unable to travel with the rest of the team because his passport had expired, so he had to fly in to Port Moresby on his own on the morning of the game.

‘‘I’ve checked my passport and it’s up to date so I’m ready to go this time. They’ve put a bit of faith in me to pick me again, so I’m very happy about that,’’ said Mullen, who returned to Newcastle yesterday after a Gold Coast holiday with eight Knights teammates.

Though Newcastle missed the finals, Mullen finished the season in fine form and captained the Knights in his 100th NRL game against the Storm in the final round.

‘‘It’s a bit disappointing I didn’t have that form for the whole season but I can take a bit of confidence from that going into next year,’’ he said.

Knights juniors Kade Snowden (Cronulla) and Michael Ennis (Canterbury), who both played for NSW this year, were included in the 18-man squad.

They will assemble at Redfern Oval at 10am today for medical checks and a briefing before travelling to Cairns tomorrow week. They will leave for Port Moresby the following day.

The squad in alphabetical order is: Matt Bowen (Cowboys), Luke Douglas (Sharks), Ennis (Bulldogs), Blake Ferguson (Sharks), Matt Gillett (Broncos), Jason King (Sea Eagles), Micheal Luck (Warriors), James Maloney (Warriors), Tim Mannah (Eels), Mullen (Knights), Corey Parker (c) (Broncos), Chris Sandow (Rabbitohs), Ben Smith (Eels), Snowden (Sharks), David Taylor (Rabbitohs), Willie Tonga (Cowboys), Uate (Knights), Tony Williams (Sea Eagles). Coach: Mal Meninga.

Sharks trio in PM squad

Sharks trio in PM squad

CRONULLA Sharks NSW Origin front rower Kade Snowden, his prop partner Luke Douglas and winger Blake Ferguson, have won selection in the Prime Minister’s XIII to play Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on Sunday week, September 26.

The team is made up of some of the best players no longer playing in the NRL finals series.

These players are also eligible for selection in the Kangaroos squad for the 2010 Four Nations tournament.

The match at Lloyd Robson Oval is part of a series of activities in conjunction with AusAID and the Papua New Guinea Rugby League which brings the Prime Minister’s XIII and PNG Kumuls together with the community to talk about the importance of staying safe on and off the field.

In a country which has the highest rate of HIV and AIDS in the Pacific – about 2 per cent of the population is living with HIV – the visit will take the Prime Minister’s XIII out into the community to deliver critical messages to residents about being fit and healthy.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard wished coach Mal Meninga and his team well: “I’m sure the Australian team will do us proud, both on and off the field and I wish Mal and the team all the best, both in their community work and in

the forthcoming match,’’ Ms Gillard said.

The team travels to Cairns next Thursday, September 23, and flies to Port Moresby the next day.

Papua New Guinea has named their squad to play an Australian Prime Minister’s 13 in their annual rugby league clash in Port Moresby on Sunday.

Nine overseas based players have been selected in the squad, which will be captained by Cronulla Sharks hooker Paul Aiton, with Rodney Pora named as vice captain.

Among the other players named are Gold Coast Titans Under 20s player Ryan Tongia and Penrith Panthers second rower James Nightingale.

The match will be new coach Stanley Gene’s first in charge of the Kumuls, after he replaced Adrian Lam who quit last week.

Kangaroo hopefuls on show in PNG

The Australian representative team's coach Mal Meninga said a few of the players would be in contention for next month's Four Nations event and have the opportunity to push their case in the annual post-season event at Lloyd Robson Oval on Sunday.

Meninga, who has coached the PMXIII team since 2006, said he was impressed with the 2010 line-up which is a mix of "experience, ethusiasm and speed" and includes players such at the Knights' Akuila Uate, Cowboys fullback Matt Bowen, big men David Taylor (Rabbitohs) and Tony Williams (Eagles), Bulldogs hooker Michael Ennis, NRL rookie of the Year Matt Gillett (Broncos) and his team-mate Corey Parker as captain.

North Queenland Cowboys utility Anthony Watts was a late inclusion on Wednesday to replace the Knights' Jarrod Mullen who was ruled out with injury.

"All of the squads I have had over the years have been great," said Meninga. "A few of the guys are in contention for the Four Nations ... and this sure beats training.

"A lot of the players tend to be a little appehensive about this trip, but go home having really enjoyed themselves. It is for a good cause with the work we do on the health initiatives." In fact Meninga believes the result of the match is secondary to the key purpose which he sees as the work the team does with the Australian Government to help promote Papua New Guinea’s fight against HIV, AIDS and violence against women. "I am not results driven; I am attitude driven," Meninga said. "The focal point of this trip is delivering an important health message. "As long as they have the right attitude and show respect for our key purpose, we will have achieved our goals."

Under Meninga, the Australians have had three wins and one draw against the Kumuls - 28-8 (2006), 24-all (2007), 53-30 (2008) and 42-12 (2009).

The team: Chris Bailey, Tony Williams, Manly Sea Eagles; Matthew Bowen, Willie Tonga, Anthony Watts, North Queensland Cowboys, Luke Douglas, Kade Snowden, Cronulla Sharks; Michael Ennis, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs; Blake Ferguson, Cronulla Sharks; Matt Gillett, Corey Parker (C), Brisbane Broncos; Micheal Luck, James Maloney, Warriors; Tim Mannah, Ben Smith, Parramatta Eels; Chris Sandow, David Taylor, South Sydney Rabbitohs; Akuila Uate, Newcastle Knights.

Mal's men playing for much more than victory

Mal's men playing for much more than victory

PORT MORESBY: The Australian Prime Minister's XIII have arrived in Port Moresby anticipating a fiery clash against Papua New Guinea during a three-day trip that is not just about rugby league.

The squad flew in from Cairns yesterday afternoon to be met by thousands of adoring PNG fans hoping to get a glimpse of their NRL idols. Coach Mal Meninga, who is with the squad for the sixth consecutive year and has been a long-time supporter of PNG football, said the team always enjoyed the trip.

''It's always a tough match, a fiery encounter, sure,'' the former Queensland and Australian captain said. ''We'll be OK, we've got some strong players and we're expecting to do well.''

But before they take to the field, the Australians will help promote important health messages on HIV/AIDS and domestic violence. PNG has the highest rate of HIV and AIDS in the Pacific at about 0.9 per cent of the population, while domestic violence rates are also among the world's highest. NRL players are already used in road safety campaigns in PNG so the match involving the PM's XIII is seen as another chance to get important messages across to the league-mad population.

Incoming PNG coach Stanley Gene has named Cronulla hooker Paul Aiton as captain for tomorrow's annual clash at Port Moresby's Lloyd Robson Oval, the Australian outfit having triumphed 42-18 last year in a match famed for its frenzied atmosphere both on and off the field.

Several players in the PM's XIII will use the game to press their claims for selection in the Australian side to compete in the Four Nations tournament, with the likes of outside backs Willie Tonga and Akuila Uate in contention for a call-up. The match also kicks off PNG's preparations for their Four Nations debut, having qualified after winning last year's Pacific Cup, but they face a massive challenge against the might of Australia, New Zealand and England.

Incoming Papua New Guinea coach Stanley Gene will take charge of his country for the first time in tomorrow’s annual Prime Minister’s 13 in Port Moresby.

Gene, who retired from representative rugby league after the 2008 World Cup, replaces former Queensland playmaker Adrian Lam as Kumuls coach, after he quit last week amid rumours of infighting.

Vinnie Wylie reports.

“The Kumuls will be looking for a good performance as they begin preparations for next month’s Four Nations tournament, which also features world champions New Zealand, Australia and England. Gene has named Cronulla Sharks hooker Paul Aiton as captain for the match, with Rodney Pora as his deputy. The Prime Minister’s 13 will be led by Brisbane Broncos second-rower Corey Parker, and includes former Australian international Matt Bowen and Fijian wing Akuila Uate.”

Stanley Gene returns as Kumuls coach
Tracie Edmondson NRL.com Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:11:00

"Ageless" Papua New Guinea legend Stanley Gene will return to the international rugby league stage this weekend ... but as a coach not a player.

Gene, who retired from representative rugby league after the 2008 World Cup and 13 years in the national team, was this week appointed coach of the Kumuls and will make his debut against the Mal Meninga-coached Prime Minister's XIII in Papua New Guinea this Sunday (Sept 26).

Gene will steer the Kumuls in their first Four Nations tournament next month following the resignation of Adrian Lam, who wanted to focus on his coaching role with the Dragons and their Telstra Premiership Finals campaign.

It is believed Gene is looking to secure the services of former England coach Tony Smith, brother of Roosters coach Brian Smith, as an assistant for the Four Nations tournament involving Australia, England, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in seven Tests from October 23 to November 13. Their first match will be against Australia at Parramatta on October 23.

Gene played under Smith at Huddersfield during his Super League career spanning 1996-2009. He is currently playing with Halifax RLFC in the Co-operative Championship in England.

PMXII and Queensland Origin coach Mal Meninga said Gene was highly respected and an experienced international who would enjoy his new role.

"He hasn't coach before but he has a lot of experience on the international scene and he played in England for years in Super League," he said.

"I think he will enjoy it. This match (on Sunday) will be good for him and they have a lot of young kids who will benefit a lot from it too for the Four Nations."

Wikipedia reports Gene's age as 36, but many in rugby league circles have "estimated" anything up to 58, although early 40s is believed to be closest to the mark.

Wikipedia has dedicated a section to Gene's age which it says "has long been a subject of contention and many running jokes amongst rugby league fans. It is generally accepted that Gene was born after the end of World War II, with most estimations stating he is between 32 and 58 years old.

"Gene himself has stated for many years that he is 34, but this is questionable as he allegedly captained PNG U21s in 1989, and he has been unable to provide a birth certificate or any other proof of his date of birth. In 2008, Brian Noble claimed to have seen a passport that says that Gene is actually 42."

It's a shame he is not playing, i love watching him play, he is one tough man. And quite talented too!
