Five tries to Yorke Islander Billo Mosby led Argun Warriors to a nail-biting 42-38 win over the Cherbourg Hornets in the grand final of the rich Cairns All Blacks carnival from October 16-18.

Argun Warriors consisted of mainly players from Badu Island and the Argun Warriors team, with many of the same players, competed at the Bindal carnival in Townsville a week before and was in memory of the Late Mrs Raba Solomon and many supporters wore shirts with her photo screen printed on them.

The side won $25,000 for first prize in Cairns at the biggest All Blacks carnival in Queensland this year.

Perhaps, more importantly to the players, they received the prestigious Jack Ahmat Memorial Shield for their win named in honour of the late and great former chairman of Badu Island.

The Cairns carnival was contested by 30 men’s teams, eight in the women’s division and eight in the under 18 grade in what was a big boost to the local economy.

The ground announcer said there were 11,987 people at the ground on final day which is bigger than many Sydney based NRL clubs get for home matches.

Included were a huge number of men, women and children from the Torres Strait islands and of Torres Strait Island descent who converged on the Cairns Junior Rugby League grounds in Mann Street for the carnival.

Only a week before Argun Warriors had contested the Bindal Sharks United All Blacks carnival in Townsville and won just one game failing to reach the semi finals.

But it was a different story at Cairns and the side boasted quality footballers like Mosby, his brother Patrick, Maipele Morseu, Noel Underwood, Walter Nona, captain Keiji Bowie, Peter Baira, Bruce Joseph, Guyai Nona, Royston Lightning and a host of others.

But they had to do it the hard way beating sides in the semi-final and grand-finals which had NRL players in their ranks.

In the semi-final, Argun Warriors exploded to an 18-0 lead before beating an Innisfail Waru outfit which included Cowboys and former Queensland State of Origin back Ty Williams.

In the decider, Cherbourg was led by explosive Sydney Rabbitohs halfback Chris Sandow and almost pulled off an amazing comeback after trailing 30-16 at half-time.

Argun coach Gerald Bowie gave an emotional speech at the break and the players were told to “stay alive both sides of the ruck.”

By the break Mosby had scored three four-pointers and added another try to that minutes into the second half before adding his fifth late in the match which shot Argun Warriors to a 38-20 advantage and seemingly having the “money in the bank.”

Mosby also suffered an unexpected fall after leaving the field just before half-time with a cork injury.

As he stood just off the field a touch judge running by accidentally knocked a stunned Mosby to terra firma.

THE FIGHTBACK
Adopting a never give up attitude, Cherbourg rallied and fought back to 36-40 down and in the final minute looked set to score in the left corner to equalise when the Warriors defence was tiring but the referee ruled a knock on.

Argun Warriors players and supporters went wild with excitement after winning the second biggest such carnival in Australian to the recent NSW Knockout Series.

Kulpiyam, another TSI side which was one of the carnival favourites, failed to make the semi finals. Significantly, some of their players including star back Solomon Ahmat stood near the Argun Warriors bench in the final cheering them on.

At the ceremony afterwards, Maipele Morseu was named rookie of the carnival, Billo Mosby player of the final, and Cairns United youngster Michael Wilson the player of the carnival.

Other NRL players to compete at the carnival included Cowboys back Obe Geia junior (Palm Island Barracudas), Wests Tigers pair Robert Lui (Cannonballs) and Daine Lawrie (Bindal Sharks).

Lawrie was named best forward of the carnival and was a major part of the Bindal team which took out the men’s plate final beating Yarrabah United 46-4.

Another TSI side worthy of praise is Magun Warriors from Yam which lost the plate semi final to Yarrabah United.

LADIES’ FINAL
The ladies’ final was won 20-16 by Ivanhoes Maidens from Cairns over Murri Gumma’s and both sides included players of Torres Strait Islander descent.

Proud Mabuiag Islander and Murri Gumma’s playmaker Stephanie Mooka won the ladies player of the carnival awards and best forward.

Ivanhoes Maidens pocketed $3000 for their victory.

One highly entertaining game in the men’s under 18 comp was between Magun Warriors and Coconut Island.Magun won convincingly and some rising stars were unearthed.

U-18 Final: Magun Warriors Yam Island 28 d Warraber 22, Player of the Carnival: N Kepa, Best Back: T Kapka, Best Forward: K Tamu.
