I am not sure if some of you realise but the majority of managers keep their players away from Cronulla. We are only used for bargaining tools to increase contract values. The club is keen to buy talent but the talent isn't keen to come here. Besides Bird, we haven't signed a young gun since Wade Graham and it could be argued that he wasn't in the upper echelon of young players running around. What player manager or parent for that matter would want their son to go and play the boring brand of football our coach makes us play?
If you look at the history of the club, when was the last player that all 16 clubs wanted and he chose to come to Cronulla? Noddy only came here because of Anderson and even then, he almost went to the Dragons. Barba wasn't wanted, either was Gordon really. Ennis had us and Canberra to chose from....no big deal there. Heigho and Ryan were being booted out of the Tigers so we gave them a lifeline. Fifita was a nobody that just happened to be a really good player. Snowden similar when he was here.
Of all the players over the years, I can only really think of Lewis choosing us over everyone else.
I look at the Roosters, Bulldogs and even Penrith, it's not very often they go out to get their man and not have a contract signed. How does Cronulla become an entity that elite players want to join? You can have your multi-million dollar developments but if you still have lightweights running the program, all the money in the world will still only buy you average players (just on elite players money). Footballers generally want to be part of a winning culture and despite the odd period of success, Cronulla is not viewed as a long term sustainable success for elite players.

money determines who goes where mate. 9 times out of 10 players end up at the clubs paying them the most, the other time is generally when they re-sign at their current club for less. Even then, this wont happen often

and on that. By all reports, Todd Carney was being chased hard by Penrith (a team you named) and signed with us for less. This backs up my statement above.

Heard this crap for years I call BS, when ever we missed out on a player this old chestnut gets thrown out there, even if true I'm confident with lyall at the helm we are heading in a great direction fast.

exactly, we dont get players cos other teams pay more. We got Wade Graham here and he was wanted, Penrith fans were foul on it.

Good point about Carney. In saying that, Cronulla was entrenched in the top 4 that year and the harmony within the club was high. I would argue that if the same scenario was being played out today, he would've left.

I hope Gorman will change things but right at the moment, our appeal to the NRL's elite is very low. We will not sign a SBW, JT, Smith, Slater, Cronk, Brooks, Segeyaro, Johnson, Hayne, Moylan etc whilst the current coaching staff is in place. The best we can expect is Sandow, Sezer etc.

no we werent, we peaked at 5 i believe and with asada looming, there was additional reason to not sign.

I was thinking today about a mid season deal, but realistically who is there you could get? The only decent one is Isaac John but with him in NSW Cup, no one knows how he is recovering from surgery.

Watched him play yesterday....went alright. Gus isn't going to let him go this year. They have the luxury of having a capable halfback replacement if one of their first choices go down. I doubt he will be at Penrith next year as he is a first grader and could go to a club like Cronulla and have no competition. Is he going to win you a comp though......no.

[B]I would have to agree Price and Flanno are not the type of Coaches you would choose if you were an up and comer or just a Top Gun . Our Flanno and our Price are also rans

it takes more than a halfback to win you a comp. I would suggest our team would improve with a capable halfback like Isaac John, I am just not sure if he would complement an off the cuff 5/8 like Barba when he is an instinct player himself.

Thanks for the update on Isaac though, much appreciated.

Reckon we should be watching the NYC comp very closely this year. Find the BEST NYC halfback, get him and play him in first grade. Kane Elgey, for example.

That certainly would not hurt the cause But..........How are we gunna sell the fact that we are a great teamto come to with great coaches etc etc

Hodkinson seems to be plan B

I would prefer Maloney to groom tracey

there are pro's and cons on the halves available, but Maloney just ticks a few more boxes for me
