That's an interesting point. If we're going to see more HIA's and suspensions, that 30 man roster gets really important. There's every chance you're going to need them at some point, so you need decent depth that's balanced across positions. If you can get Watson and Taylor cheap you'd almost have to do it (with our current depth anyway).

Kind of like the NFL way of looking at things. How many players do we need for each position? Like that third string halfback right now... I don't think we have a second string, arguably a first string!

Perhaps a good argument for Watson
Healthy squad = him vs Tracey for 14
But in actuality one is probably covering for an injury somewhere more often than not...

Well **** you for raining on my parade!!!
Yes figures are loose but it's not so bad, I think you undervalued Woods, Chad and SJ collectively by about $500k. Let's say $350k. Also upgrades may average $75k saving a total of $150k for the 6 Bort mentioned, this would give us a total $1.9M maybe $1.8M for 4 spots. We can afford $1.5M for both Dale and Gaigai, leaving $300k for 2 players.

The $300k gets 2 @ $150k or 1 @ $250k + 1 @ $50k. How we get to 1 @ $50k is our 30th player is on minimum and signed up after mid season before cut off, thereby paying for 1/2 season.

I'd tend to agree with your numbers on those guys but usually someone will pop up to whinge when I try and say I think player X is on this much etc etc

Upgrades may very well average 75k rather than 100k, I've really got no idea about that.
I do think we likely had to pay out a bit to keep Rudolf and Will in particular, and all are players in our best 17 or 18 so would demand a little more on average. Will in particular may have gone up something like 150k up to 400k so even if others only went up average of 75k the overall average would be around 100k. Hence why I called it 100. But really got no idea what those contracts were worth before or are now.

Even then probably just means your 300k becomes 150k across two players, including likely 1-2 being midway pickups.
This gives us those two, plus the 6 guys I called 'in and out', plus Metcalf, Pele, Jensen, Hunt, probably Wilton and maybe at least 1 of Tracey or Trindall so around 14 guys under 180k (the median wage of NRL players).

Can also save a little bit potentially if we could get Ash Taylor or another half for 200-250k rather than Moylan around 300k.
So yeah maybe we could get Finucane and Gagai both if we didn't have to overpay for either. Not if we get Watson though which we supposedly want... although given the news around Hynes and McInnes was minimal probably more chance we sign one of the other two than the Watson goss ends up correct

id take the risk on ash taylor for a one year deal, but defiitely not milford

I don’t want either of them near our club, neither are anywhere near first grade standard anymore. But if you held a gun to my head and demanded pick one, then yes I’d go Taylor purely because at least he’s more known as an organisational halfback so to speak. A game controller, at least moreso than Milford, which is the kind of halfback I think we need alongside Hynes. Taylor might be **** at that as well but at least he’s better at that part of the game than Milford. ****ing sad and desperate times though if we’re even considering either of them.

At this point I’m onboard with flicking Trindall the keys and hoping for the best. There’s just nothing on the market worth looking at. **** I wish SJ and the club worked their **** out.

I'm with you on all counts. How desperate to consider either but I don't want Moylan either and there's nothing out there off contract this year and next year so the best course is to go in house and develop and bring our juniors through. Give Trindall the keys and let him develop.

He does though, people seem to gloss over his defence. It's absolutely terrible.

If we want him to be a mentor I'd prefer to get him in a coaching capacity.
To be fair the only times I've watched him have been when souths are running downhill so I haven't noticed the defensive issues.

Any thoughts on Cooper Johns? Only 22, spent past few yrs in Storm system and not many opportunities as how do you depose their stars? Played well in games he has been in and has trained/played with Nicho. Would be cheaper than Moylan and give Trindall competition for the position.

There isn't much available and I'd rather plonk on possible potential rather than has been potential such as Moylan, Milf and Taylor.

If someone told me we were getting a young half from the storm, who’d played a handful of games and will be tutored by the John’s brothers I’d be keen. Haven’t seen a lot of him though. Potential or getting by on his surname?

Have been watching him since 19...

Decent enough as a 6. Not sure I’d take him as a 7 in the NRL. Hasn’t dominate Cup. 22 is still young though. Could prove me wrong.

Probably says a lot a second rower has been picked in front of him a couple times recently to play in halves

800k is the asking price for dale finucane, get it done

then get vaughan on the cheap

I feel like that's too much for Dale but if the club want him and are willing to pay that then none of my business really. Get it done.

I’m gunna go against everything I don’t like by suggesting a 4 yr deal @ 2.7
He originally wanted 4, supposedly all clubs have knocked that back & are willing to offer 3, think outside the square Sharkies!

I'd be okay with that
You'd think with Dale he'd either still be worth that in last year (at 33) or would probably at least still be good enough for bench

I'd also be okay with 3x800k

I don't mind the idea of the back end of his contract being less so we aren't in a position we are with Fifita when his age reduces his output and we're then overpaying.

Seems to be cut from the same cloth as Gal and will still have that Warrior mentality at 33!
