GEOFF TOOVEY'S POSITION UNDER SIEGE
COURIER MAIL – OCTOBER 24, 2014
POSTED IN: GEOFF TOOVEY, LEEDS RHINOS, MANLY SEA EAGLES, NATHAN BROWN, NEWS
Geoff Toovey

Manly is facing a dramatic shake-up with the positions of coach Geoff Toovey and general manager Dave Perry under siege as part of sweeping changes expected under the club’s new ownership model.

Toovey’s job is temporarily safe and he will be in charge for at least the start of 2015, still there has been speculation for a number of weeks about his long-term future.

The problem is his relationship has soured with senior players over the past 12 months, especially since the man they most respected, former assistant coach Brad Arthur, left for the Parramatta Eels.

There is already speculation Nathan Brown will be appointed Toovey’s assistant and eventually take over the head coaching role.

Manly would be absolute numskulls to move on Toovey who has done a good job with his squad, for the most part maintaining the quality and competitiveness of the Manly team after Hasler moved on
**** how senior players feel, move them on and keep the quality coach, his star veterans might only be around for a few more years anyways prior to retirement or ESL duty

Sounds like the Sharks, except for the quality coach part

Manlys senior players really seem like a bunch of spoilt sooks.

not just the seniors.

I can understand some of the guys who have won multiple premierships together not wanting to play in the team without their mates, but there is a salary cap. How many premiership winning players can you keep in a team. Especially the amount of state and international reps they have in the side

Moving Tooves on is madness but the club is about to explode after many many years of phenomenal success.

If he comes onto the market then he should be signed. Mongrel. Pound for pound one of the hardest men to ever play league. A carbon copy of Hasler as a coach.

A full squad worth, just ask the Roosters.

FMD - Hasler was a far tougher player & 1000 times better than that princess in his playing days. Toovey was skilful (he gave Cliffy the best BJ's ever), but he was never "tough" at all

There doesn't seem to be much Barba talk going on in here. It's sounding like a done deal. I personally would be stoked with Barba. Not really worried about his off field life as long as he can produce on the field for us - Quality player.

Really? I hated Toovey. Toovey and Langer were emaciated little turds when they started out (circa 1987?). To this day I still wonder about both of them. Toovey hit as hard as I've seen for his size.

Des was tough. I remember his crazy work out antics immediately upon retirement.... I don't remember his entire career, but most of it!

Not a Toovey fan probably from from the 3/4 mark into his career where Fulton got in his ear about questioning EVERY decision from the refs but I can't see how you couldn't think he was a tough mongrel, pound for pound I haven't seen many tougher.

Imagine adding Gorman, Toovey and Ennis to this Club in one season. What a change to the culture.

Toovey was a very tough player for his size. I hated him, but i don't understand how anyone can question his toughness.

A full squad worth, just ask the Roosters.

that further makes my point.

Roosters have a very sus cap thats for sure. Cordner,Tupou, Maloney, Pearce, RTS, JWH, Friend etc etc this team wont stay together long. The cap cannot allow it. Unless there is under table offers.

It will be obvious when the Sharks offer Cordner 600K and he stays a Rooster and gets paid 300K (staying for the loyalty)…….im sure there will be brown bags everywhere when some of these rep players get into negotiations

Agree totally, and even with the current backline, they can still go after Fergo (an origin rep!).

FMD, if the roosters aren't $1m over their cap, I'll eat my hat!

Oh but wait!
The NRL have checked and they are fine for 2014, but over in 2013 (A premiership year), so we will give them a small fine!

Pass me the salt and pepper someone!

This post was lost amongst the Toovey V Hasler rambling.

Eels seeking dispensation if Hayne returns
SMH.com.au
– October 25, 2014Posted in: Jarryd Hayne, News, Parramatta Eels, Sam Burgess, South Sydney Rabbitohs

Jarryd Hayne

Parramatta is expected to be granted salary cap dispensation to accommodate Jarryd Hayne if he wanted to come back to the NRL in a bid to avoid a repeat of the situation that cost the club and the code Israel Folau.

While Hayne plans to give himself until next November to decide whether he has a future in NFL, Parramatta officials are set to meet with the NRL about their salary cap position if his bid to play American football didn't work out and he wanted to return for 2016.

However, they also believe they would have first right of refusal on his services if he was to resume his NRL career after granting the 26-year-old an immediate release from the final year of his contract to enable him to try to make it in the NFL.

South Sydney are thought to have a similar understanding with Sam Burgess if he were to return to the NRL after his stint with English rugby union club Bath.

So what does that mean? They could potentially sign a guy like Israel, then Hayne comes back they get him too and remain under the cap because Hayne is cap exempt……..more like the Eels NEED to either sign in the hope Hayne comes back, ie some 1 year deals. Or just forget about him and move on. Im sick of this ****

Thats ****ing bull**** if the nrl do anything of the sort

agree. If the team wants to get hayne if he comes back they manage their cap better to make sure they can get him. Ie 1 year deals to replacements etc. Not just friggen max the cap out then let the NRL give him exemptions.

Imagine if a team (not that it didnt happen with the Roosters imo) won a grand final after say Hayne leaves, they replace him with a super star for similar money, then he comes back exempt of the cap. Then they go on to win. Whats the point of a salary cap if the NRL will allow this sort of thing. How can you fine Manly 6000 dollars or Newcastle 9525 or whatever it was for being that far over the cap, when you will basically hand other teams a 1 million dollar a year player
