St George Illawarra Dragons have beaten the opposition to sign Russell Packer in a deal worth more than a million dollars once he comes out of prison at the end of the year.

The former Warriors prop is still behind bars after being found guilty of punching a man on a night out in Sydney last year and, in the words of the magistrate, Greg Grogan, punching again while the man was "lying motionless on the ground and then stomping on his head".

CONFLICTING STORY: Penrith and Packer agree deal

Packer has been busy in prison sorting out what his next move will be and Fairfax Media believes he will agree to play for the Red V.

The Panthers also went after Packer in a big way but ran into salary cap issues, while the Broncos could not match what the other clubs were willing to pay.

I really hope we don't sign the meth head. What about this bloke though? I'd like to see us have options in the halves next year, considering there are no superstars around.

I have never seen him play but worth a look.
Reading some of the comments from when he went up to the Gronks from Souths and everyone has different opinions some say he isnt that good that's why souths didn't keep him but than others were saying the opposite. This comment interested me though.
"This Kid can Play… Was upset when the Tigers never gave him the chance he deserved and kept Lui. Only to have all the problems that Lui gave us before they released him . Darren has a natural kicking game and can read better than a lot of the halves we have going around at the moment. Just give this boy a crack at First grade and see."

This kid could be what we need. Zerotackle doesn't say how old he is anyone have any idea?

I agree her has very rarely been used to fit his style , he came to us as a wide running back rower or center we have forced him to play as a prop and that's not his go. He is a good off the bench as a wide running second rower.

So we still need at the very least one preferably two big hard straight running mongrel props It is no coincidence that most of the top teams have big mobile harmen props

Souths , Dogs ,Chooks etc

He appears to have a good kicking game short and long , but hard to tell from a short video clip, and stuck behind the new up and coming half. Maybe there are some more like him around who want a crack at 1sts in that case we would be one of the few teams looking for a top halfback, most teams have a better half than us.

I just read that the Broncos have re-signed Ben Hunt until the end of the 2017 season. Official announcement soon apparently. Anyone got any more details on this?

He is 25, which is perfect for a half IMO. Interesting comments about his kicking game. That's a big problem with our current halves set up, and an even bigger problem should Robbo get injured. Does Robbo have the best kicking game of any half at the club? Sadly maybe yes.

they haven't signed him as of yet but it's going to happen soon. Pretty much a sure thing.

Beyond 10 metres out Robson would have the worst kicking game at the club

And that includes reserve grade
and props...
