Injured.
The injury is what's possibly forcing him to retire.
http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...r-as-a-midseason-transfer-20140617-zsaux.htmlDaniel Mortimer's shift to the Gold Coast is unlikely to be the last mid-season signing, with Melbourne eyeing off Wests Tigers winger Marika Koroibete,With less than two weeks left until the June 30 transfer window closes, injury or form-affected clubs are attempting to shore up their rosters.
The Titans have done just that and Mortimer is likely to make his club debut against another mid-season signing, St George Illawarra halfback Benji Marshall, at Cbus Stadium on Sunday. The deal, which expires at the end of next year, is a timely one given the Gold Coast's horror injury toll which has claimed first-choice halves Albert Kelly, Aidan Sezer and Beau Henry. Greg Bird, a potential stop-gap pivot, will be involved with the NSW team in the final two interstate matches.
The Storm are another club hit hard by injury and Origin commitments and are also looking to bolster their depth. They recently made a play for Canterbury's Krisnan Inu and are now hoping to secure the services of Koroibete. The Fijian-born international burst onto the scene two years ago, scoring 12 tries in his 16 appearances. However, he has fallen in the pecking behind Tigers outside backs Pat Richards, David Nofoaluma and Tim Simona. The southerners are hopeful a deal can be done in coming days although other clubs are also in the mix.

It is expected that 17 Cronulla players from the 2011 squad, 15 of them who remain at the club, will be served with show-cause notices from the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority in the near future.

They've changed it now... I like how they wrote 17 in numerals, and then five in letters...
You'd never know.
