Surely not many of our players though would be getting much of a pay rise. Couple of players maybe getting 50k here and there but not 2.5 worth of upgrades.

And with us finally shedding Fifitas and Graham’s massive contracts we should have plenty of money now available for 2023.

Ridiculous if we don’t.

Minimum wage is rising by 50k, any decent player agent will use that as leverage to ensure their guys get atleast the same if not more.

50k x 30 is 1.5 million of that gone.

Not all of the top 30 would be on minimum wage though, wonder how many would be? Maybe somewhere between 5-10

Is that the 27-30 min wage or the other min wage?

There is probably a juggling act of who you spread some love to though.

If you have 8 guys on min wages go up and suddenly on same or more than the next 7 guys do you top them up too to keep them happy?
Something that at least needs to be considered.
Potentially you stagger some money around, some guys get 50k, some in the next sort of ‘bracket’ get 35k, next bracket 20k, top few earners just get a little 10k so they don’t feel forgotten
Easy to say bad luck to those who don’t get a required rise through this but you don’t want players feeling ripped off and I’m sure there are managers who would try and make sure they do

Pretty certain it's the 27-30, but that's my point.
Player's 21-26 are probably now contracted for around the same amount as those at the bottom of the squad, possibly even less.
They will have to be upgraded which could just continue the cycle up through the squad.

There is no "extra money". That $2.5m is 100% spoken for if your top 26 are already under contract.

Here is how it breaks down. Hopefully this clarifies a few things. I'm using the numbers found in this article. Please correct me if there is a newer version or additional info has been released.

The 2023 NRL Premiership salary cap will increase to $12.1m in 2023 from $9.6m in 2022, a 25% increase.
New number of $12.1m in total.

The cap for top 30 players will increase to a historic high of $11.45 million, a 22% increase from the 2022 salary cap.
The development list will increase from $240,000 to $650,000
This is made up of $11.45m for the top 30 and $650k for the development list.

... minimum salary for all male players in a club’s top 30 NRL squad will grow to $120,000.
Minimum wage is increased for players 27-30.
* In 2022 minimum wage for players 1-26 was already $120k.
* In 2022 minimum wage for players 27-30 was $80k.

As a result of today’s announcement, players who have the standard form ratchet clause in their playing contract will receive an 18% increase to their playing fee, with the increase to be effective from 1 November
All players who have the standard clause get an 18% increase.
* Note that this wouldn't apply to a player who is #27-#30 with the clause, since they are already receiving a 50% increase.

Warning - Maths below
***

Players 1-26 before: $8.88m
Players 1-26 increase: $1.59m (18%)
Players 1-26 after: $10.47m

Players 27-30 before: $320k
Players 27-30 after: $480k

Match payments before: 0
Match payments increase: ~$500k (Based on speculation. 20 players each get $1k for 25 games)
Match payments after: ~$500k

So the total number of $11.45m is made up of...

$10.47m in payments to the top 26
$480k in payments to players 27-30
$500k in match payments.

Cheers for this burgo. The only thing I was unsure about was that ratchet clause. Is that standard across all contracts then? It's not something I'd overly heard of before.

I hadn't either but based on that wording you'd have to say it is part of the standard contract unless specifically excluded.

The other question is the tier 2 cap (development list). They said it goes to $650k but didn't specify whether those players get a raise on their $60k, and/or whether that means you can now have more dev list players. Likely both are happening.

My guess is that dev list players also get the ratchet upgrade (to ~$71k) and that leaves ~$225k in the tier 2 cap to cover match payments and to bring in guys from outside your dev list in emergencies.

I guess its a good thing overall, despite not clearing a lot of cap room. Realistically an extra 2m for each side would have been just filtered into the pockets of the top players. This way everyone has seen some benefit.

I wonder if we'll see more info come put about the rachet clause, or if it will just be easier to generate clicks writing articles about who every club will sign.

Yep. Agreed. Even though there wasn't a mandated upgrade to the $120k minimum wage, anyone on $120k previously is now on $140k.

I just found an article from a week ago where the Souths CEO said the NRL mandates ratchet clauses in all contracts.

“The ratchet clauses have got a start in everyone's contracts, they've been mandated by the NRL since COVID started,” Solly told SEN.
I expect this means all players who have signed a contract since March/April 2020 have them, plus anyone who negotiated one prior to that (about 20% of players in 2018 according to this article).

Up to 20 per cent of players – generally those who are in the top half-dozen earners in their squad – at some clubs are understood to be turning to the mechanism to provide more certainty around their long-term futures when there is little around the ongoing salary cap.
For the Sharks, Jesse Ramien is the only player whose current contract was signed prior to Covid (November 2019).

Tigers now have 28/30 filled.

They’re looking at Nathan Brown now and a centre to finalise their roster for 2023. Apparently they still got close to 800k left. So brown could be 300k and then still got 500k to throw at a centre.
