They really need a good hooker and half back.
Or at least someone in those roles for more than a couple of weeks.
I hope Gus is in there telling Barrett who to pick and who to stick. It might be Burton's only chance of playing anywhere near his potential at 5/8

For one hynes spent a year in a ball playing position in the nrl, not in the centers, not sure how you could say Burton was more ready

And hynes came to a club with an experience half who multiple coaches have said has a very intelligent footy IQ

Just my opinion mate
Fair enough, will agree to disagree. Me saying I thought Burton was more ready was in reference to the games I saw from both in the halves. As for who was more ready I think it’s a negligible difference either way & can see the argument for both, probably still would have said Burton.

End of the day I would have been stoked to sign either. Before the season started I would have said Burton would probably be slightly ahead on who I think would’ve been the best signing for us. Purely based on the fact I’d seen a very impressive kicking game from him where I’d seen mainly poor kicks from Hynes.

Kicking was/is my major issue with our squad.

As for the experienced half I’d gladly swap Moylan for Burton even though he has started well. I’ve never thought Moylan was a good signing for us though.

Been pretty Congenial in here at a 4/1 Winning ratio. Wonder if the Easter Tallons come out after Sat night:D
That's the typical bone-headed buffonery I've come to expect for you.... silly pr**k.
(just getting in ahead of time mate)

Vaughan won't be there next year from what i've read.
No way - they already can't fit Kikau and Mahoney under cap (both contracts currently unregistered by NRL).
No chance they have cash to retain Vaughan.

Would you have Vaughan at Sharks?
I thought directly disobeying the strict instructions of his coach to breach covid protocols was really really poor, so unless he ate a big serve of humble wage pie, no. And he's good enough he can get a contract to his playing value elsewhere.

Further to that I just wrote a big ol post in signings thread which suggests it would be tough to fit him unless we got rid of probably Hunt and Williams both. It'd probably be something like Hunt, Williams, Fifita, OUT Vaughan, Kaufusi, Pele IN which isn't awful.
But between the bbq and the time he was clearly off his chops while injured I don't trust Vaughan in my team.

yep, he would incredible off our bench
Agree but I think he will get paid to start somewhere and for me past indiscretions + expense + depth we already have, I'm not expecting we are in the market for him.

They really need a good hooker and half back.

they need a good everything including a coach

They got rid of Tolman even though he would have stayed on for not much coin and kept making tackles and hit ups all day every week for them. their loss our gain

Mahoney is going there next year isn't he, so that sorts out one problem.

And while he is not a halfback, Kikau is also signed for 2023.

Kikau would be a mess at the Dogs without the coach, team and structure of Penrith to keep him in check

I can see him being an overplaying mistake / penalty machine. he wont have the halves to feed him good ball either.

they are throwing money at players but I don't know how much better they are actually making that team and if it will work under what Barret is planning. There are inherit problems a few big names won't solve.

Flanno recruited smart, he didn't just flash the big bucks at every off contract player. He recruited the types of players he needed to implement his plans and structures and balanced it out with bargain players that he put trust in and help develop. He also had leadership in his team (something the dogs are light on)

It took him over 5 years to get it to a place where it could challenge for a title.

I don't think Baz has 5 years to work with before getting punted and he is an inferior and less experienced coach than Flanno was so it would take even longer if he can even do it.

Would you have Vaughan at Sharks?

I think I prefer the madmen forwards already on our books and who have been in our system. Dale & Tolz were already proven consistent performers before they got here and they fill a specific role / type of forward.

On cheapish contract to replace Fifs though yea maybe, Vaughn has been at 2 weak clubs in a row now, maybe would look good under Fitz

There's just something about these ex mid/late 2010's blues forwards that gives me bad vibes (Tamou, Woods, Vaughan). They are good experienced players but they can be lazy and sloppy and sometimes bit soft. Vaughan prob less so than the other 2 and he has shown consistency in the past and is at a good age for a prop forward.

Our club might be just what he needs.

Dogs need him more than us so wonder what they will offer him for 2022 ?

Meh, i’m slightly leaning towards no. Im pretty happy with our options at prop at the moment, including guys like Hunt, Williams and Pele who are trying to get into the 17, if we re-sign them that is. Also we have Kaufusi already coming. If we’re going to target another forward I’d rather target a young hungry prospect that can become another Fitz project as opposed to a guy like Vaughan who would likely demand decent coin.

8. Rudolf/Finucane
10. BHU/Finucane
13. Finucane/McInnes

Bench: two or three out of Kaufusi, Williams, Hunt, Pele, Rudolf/BHU or a younger prospect. With McInnes on there if you want to keep Dale at lock.

I don’t have a problem with that. I know not everyone would agree but thats just how I see it.

I don't see how they can - NRL already won't register contracts for Mahoney and Kikau because they put them over the cap for next year.
I can only see them retaining Vaughan if they got someone else to pick up Thompsons contract, in which case he is a great keep. Maybe paying 200k towards that gives them the money for Kikau and Vaughan, probably makes it a good move. But they'd need to move someone else to afford Reed still which would mean Thompson OUT for Kikau and Reed IN and not retaining Vaughan - leaves them very light up front.

It's hard to see who else would be on enough to make those contracts work by offloading them and also desirable enough someone would actually want them enough to pay most of their contract. https://www.zerotackle.com/rugby-league/teams/canterbury-bankstown-bulldogs/

Maybe they chip in 200k for Thompson and 150k for TPJ which should be enough to see them get offers and then can sign Kikau, Mahoney and Vaughan (keep in mind they have some money towards Kikau and Reed already, but the unknown is how much).

RFM probably the only guy coming off contract on decent money.

Kikau is overated already imo. and wont solve **** for the dogs.

waste of money. they should of used the 800k they've spent on him (or more) on getting a 7 to partner with burton or chasing a gun no.1.

mahoney will make a difference but thats only 2 pieces of their spine sorted.

Think its a case of who get the axe first - Barrett or Madge.
Flanno will take whichever comes first

Flanno is one of the two roads I can see the Tigers taking when they inevitably punt Madge:

1. Flanno (Shane would love this, the guy has a hard on for full club rebuilds, depending how hands on he can get with Sheens above him imo)
2. Sheens just turning around and saying “**** it, I’ll do it myself.

I hope Flanagan gets the chance, he’s done his time now and i’d be happy for him to get another crack at coaching.
