He's doing well now (arguably hit his peak), but I'd question a long contract for that type of player. So many of those big, dynamic guys burn out and you're stuck with a decent forward chewing up your cap. Fif's was arguably great value from 2012-18. Paulo looks like he starting hitting his straps in 2016...? Hard to tell with all the suspensions.

(this is all Wiki reading so someone might have been watching him more closely and have an opinion - have at it lads).

You can't be completely risk adverse with your cap management though or you end up with a squad full of Robsons

All signings (particularly big money ones) involve an element of risk but there is a calculated smart risk and risk out of desperation

If for instance it takes a 4 year deal to get Paulo here and he gives us 2 excellent seasons , a good 3rd season do we really care if his 4th season is average or injury riddled if he was helping us win games for 3 years instead of a competitor ?

Was giving Fifita a contract extension @ $800k + per year after helping us win a GF and being one of the best forwards in the game unreasonable? I don't think so. We wouldn't have done that if we had the crystal ball of him struggling with injury a few seasons down the road.

Barba was a risk which didn't end well but it worked out beautifully for us in 2016 and ultimately gave us what we were aiming for.

Players who arn't at the end of their careers want longer term contracts and you can understand why

Weird example given he specifically was on more like 600k not 800-900 but I guess I agree with the statement.

Also in trouble when you pay that kind of money to someone who gets/develops a chronic injury and starts barely making the side when there are multiple injuries.

Fitz would know Paulo through Blues, Paulo also know a handful of our players through Blues - he can come to us if he wants to play for Cronulla and be competitive. If he wants the highest offer he can go somewhere else. 4 years at more than 800k screams Dugan/Fifita/Moylan to me.

It's a good example in the context of the Bulldogs who did reportedly sign Woods on $800k a year - that was the wrong type of forward to throw that level of coin at but it was the desperate dogs. Woods can be good but isn't dynamic or a match winner.

We only brought him on board cause he was significantly discounted thanks to the dogs covering alot of the salary the first few seasons for us otherwise for $800k you would want Woods not missing a tackle or dropping a ball all season and making 150m+ game in game out to justify the coin.

Dogs had the right idea trying to lure a player like Fifita from our club to theirs though

3 years max for JP if paying 800k. Agree with all the others, forward longevity isn't what it used to be. I think we would be in a repeat fifita situation.

That being said, if he scored the winning try in a GF for him I'd cop whatever came with it.

Sign Junior now for 850k a season 4 years and we win a premiership but he spends the next 3 years playing less and less games to the point he is hardly making the side?
I'll take it!

I will still discuss him retiring/medically retiring/taking other opportunities though

Ends up a cult figure and we rinse and repeat every 4 years. I could get used to that.

Feel like the obvious solution is to pay him 400k per year until he scors a try in a winning gf, which then triggers an extension at $1m per year for two years with compulsory medical retirement in the second year.

I'd take that contract if it was offered to me

Haha straight to the $1m per year medical retirement?

I’ve been trying to convince a local A Grade coach I know that I’m good for 4 minutes of action. 2 either side of half time. Happy to defend in the middle but I’m not taking any hit ups.

Looks like the Tigers landed Isaiah Papali’i. 3 years. So the Eels should be in the market for a new backrower now that they’ve lost two of them for 2023.

Briton you seem like you need a new challenge...

You know what? Correct me if im wrong, but wasnt there rumblings a few years ago the Eels had an interest in Nikora? It didnt develop into anything substantial obviously, but you never know. Might not be out of the realms of possibility that they come back in for him.

Great signing for them

My word it is. They’ve struck out a lot in the player market in recent times but it does looks like Tim Sheens is starting to have a little bit of an effect.
