Neill snubs Reds for Hammers

THE lure of a reported $125,000 per week salary has reportedly proven too hard for Lucas Neill to resist, with the Australia defender set to sign with English Premier League struggler West Ham United.

Neill, 28, had long been expected to join Liverpool in the January transfer window, and the Reds had finally agreed terms with Neill's current club Blackburn Rovers, but West Ham played its trump card.

Flush with cash from a recent takeover, and urgently needing to splash it to save the club from relegation, the Eastenders reportedly offered Neill £50,000 pounds ($125,486) per week.

It was more than Liverpool was prepared to pay, perhaps gambling that the Socceroos captain would be won over by the prestige of Liverpool and the opportunity to play in a side that regularly challenges for trophies both at home and in Europe.

The move came to a head yesterday (AEDT) when Liverpool told Neill's camp that he must quickly accept its offer or it would look elsewhere.

Neill then reportedly opted for West Ham, with the comfort of a reported escape clause that would release him from Upton Park if the Hammers do get relegated.

"Lucas has agreed terms on a two and a half year deal with West Ham and is looking forward to the challenge ahead," Neill's agent Peter Harrison told The Times.

But, and it is a big but. Neill remains under contract at Ewood Park with the Rovers and will only be able to join the Hammers once his current club reaches agreement with the Londoners.

Such an agreement could take some time to strike, meaning Neill may not be in the West Ham squad for the match at Newcastle United this weekend.

Blackburn had accepted Liverpool's offer of fringe full back Stephen Warnock in exchange for Neill, as it provided the Ewood Park outfit with immediate defensive cover for the Socceroos defender.

In the absence of any such swap being forthcoming from West Ham, Blackburn may wait until it can find a new full back before releasing Neill.

That provides the intriguing possibility of Neill playing for Blackburn at Manchester City this weekend.

Rovers fans would be less than impressed with Neill's decision to move to a rival club well below them on the Premiership table.

A move to a club with the history and prestige of Liverpool would have been a touch easier to take.

From a playing perspective, Neill's move should guarantee him first-team football on a regular basis given West Ham's woeful defencce in the current campaign.

At Liverpool he would have been more of a squad player, sharing playing time with the club's deep pool of defenders, but would have been arguably more challenged to play better in order to cement a first team spot.

Neill signed for Blackburn from Millwall in 2001 and has made more than 200 appearances for the Lancashire club.
