All-Stars live up to billing
August 6th, 2009

THE Indigenous All-Stars survived a brave Army assault to claim the maiden Family Unity Cup at Richardson Park last night.

In front of more than 3000 rugby league fans, an All-Stars side featuring former NRL stars Cliff Lyons, Nathan Blacklock and Sid Domic crossed for six tries in a 30-16 win.

Former Brisbane Broncos and Penrith forward Domic was arguably the standout performer, playing a pivotal role as the All-Stars took a 20-6 half-time lead.

His surging runs were instrumental in two first-half tries, while his work in defence proved a feature.

Lyons, who did it all during his distinguished career with Manly, NSW and Australia, illustrated some sublime touches in attack - not bad for a bloke who is 47 years of age.

"It's great to be up here in Darwin and we're happy to get home for a good win," Lyons said.

Blacklock, best remembered for his electric displays down the flank for St George-Illawarra, had a strong game at fullback and engineered the game's best try just four minutes from time.

The Tingha flyer chipped and regathered for the four-pointer which put the icing on the All-Stars cake.

While the three were worth the price of admission alone, the Darwin-based members of the All-Stars also played a key role.

Nightcliff's Adrian Corrie, University centre Damien Mick, Sharks playmaker Warren Berto, Litchfield hooker Joel Tomes and his Bears teammate Peter O'Shea were the best of the local brigade.

The Army definitely offered glimpses and even threatened a come-from-behind win when two tries inside the first 10 minutes of the second-half dragged the scoreboard back to 20-16.

INDIGENOUS ALL-STARS 30 (Adrian Corrie, Slade McElhone, Michael Hamilton, Damien Mick, Warren Berto, Nathan Blacklock tries, Berto 2, Mick goals) d ARMY 16 (Luke Madden, Daniel Shelton, Paul Devir tries, Isaac Harris 2 goals).
