Couldnt agree more. That's the problem with league these days - when you recruit players from other clubs they just don't have the passion. At least Dykes does. And with Noddy out for the next six weeks i reckon they should blood a good young half from the lower grades - it's time to unearth some new talent.

I totally agree, Adam Dykes has been the stand out player for the sharks this year. Take a look at the dailey M points this season, Dykes has got 5 or 6 points. With Noddy out i think Dykes should go to half back and Vagana at five eight. Noddy hasnt been at his best anyhow so i think we might do alright with that combination.

Injured Dykes not ready to pull pin on season just yet

By Glenn Jackson
May 10, 2006

SHARKS halfback Adam Dykes quickly went from shattered to stoked last night when it emerged his ankle injury might not be as bad as first thought.

Dykes, 29, had tests on his ankle late yesterday that showed he may avoid the need for a pin to be inserted, which would put him out for about five months.

The Sharks initially lost Dykes for three months after results of an MRI scan confirmed yesterday he had ruptured an ankle ligament, but just hours later after visiting a specialist the halfback was far more upbeat.

"It's pretty good news," Dykes said. "He [the specialist] is not 100 per cent but I'll have an arthroscopy on Thursday.

They originally thought I'd have to get it pinned but from what he's saying, he doesn't think it needs to get pinned. It could be only four or six weeks."

There remains the chance, however, the in-form halfback will need a pin inserted to repair the injury, suffered on Sunday in a dominant Dykes performance against St George Illawarra.

That would put him out for the rest of the season.

"He's pretty sure it'll only be four or six," Dykes said.

"He'll clean out the cartilage but he said he can't promise me anything - if he opens it up and it needs to be pinned, he'll just pin it on the spot.

I came out of there pretty excited, considering I'd originally gone in there to book in for an operation to have a pin put in.

I'm stoked at the moment."

Sharks coach Stuart Raper has named Brett Kearney as halfback to play Canberra on Sunday.

There is some hope, however, that Brett Kimmorley, who suffered a similar injury to that of Dykes, may return the following weekend against the Bulldogs.

"There's a slight chance, but it'll probably be the week after," Raper said. Facing another battle will be Dragons halfback Mathew Head, who spoke yesterday of his devastation at yet another injury setback.

Head will be out for six weeks and said there was a risk he might miss the rest of the season after re-injuring his troublesome right knee.

"There might be a chance," Head said.

"But the best way to not have it happen is to do the rehab.

There's always a chance of something going wrong, of it not coming together."

Head, 24, said he feared the worst when told he was facing another lengthy stint on the sidelines - he missed most of last season after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

"I was just thinking, is the season over? It was pretty devastating.

It was a dreadful time.

But I've had a day to think about it.

It's just not as strong as it's got to be.

I'll have six weeks off and get it as strong as I can.

I'm only young, I've got the rest of my career ahead of me.

I may as well get it right now."

English referee Russell Smith, meanwhile, was axed from first grade yesterday after his controversial Tigers-Sea Eagles game on Sunday.

"He was dropped," referees spokesman Bill Harrigan said.

"After viewing the match, [referees boss] Robert Finch had a look at a number of decisions, and he made the decision he had to stand down this weekend.

But we expect him to bounce back."

NSWRL chief executive Geoff Carr said he would write to Parramatta after winger Eric Grothe turned up two hours late to a City medical on Monday.

"We'll be asking the Parramatta club and Eric Grothe to explain what happened," Carr said.

"When we've received a reply, we'll determine what course of action should be taken."

The Eels have named Grothe to play the Bulldogs on Sunday after he was ruled out of the City side because of a back injury.

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has dropped centre Shaun Berrigan to his bench to face Manly on Saturday - he makes way for Brent Tate.

Cowboys second-rower Luke O'Donnell will be given until the last minute to recover from a rib injury to face Melbourne on Saturday.

Cronulla will be without pivot Adam Dykes for the next three months as the Sharks veteran faces ankle surgery later this week.

Dykes ruptured the ligaments in his ankle during the final minutes of Sunday's NRL victory over St George Illawarra and requires an operation.

It will be eight weeks before Dykes can start rehabilitation and he won't play for up to 12 weeks, possibly returning in late July.

The news is a terrible blow to the Sharks who had surged into the NRL's top eight on the back of three consecutive wins orchestrated by Dykes.

"Adam has completely ruptured the ligament, which means he is likely to require surgery and have a pin put in to stabilise the joint," said Sharks physiotherapist Matt Green.

"After that he will be in a boot for about eight weeks before we can do any rehab on the ankle."

With halfback Brett Kimmorley still on the sidelines for at least another week, ironically with a similar ankle injury suffered five weeks ago, Sharks coach Stuart Raper has moved New Zealand test star Nigel Vagana from centre to five-eighth and former South Sydney pivot Brett Kearney into halfback for Sunday's game at Canberra Stadium.

Kearney played five-eighth in the Sharks past three wins and Raper is now relieved to have recruited the 22-year-old.

"That's why we brought someone like Brett Kearney to the club, to back up guys like Adam and Brett Kimmorley, and he gets his chance this week," said Raper.

"Nigel Vagana has played five eighth for us in the past and Brett (Kimmorley) is due back in the next few weeks.

"While losing Adam certainly isn't ideal, I'm confident we have the players who can step in and do a good job for us."

Parramatta winger Eric Grothe made a mockery of the representative medical process, being named in the Eels team to play the Bulldogs on Sunday just 24 hours after failing his NSW City medical for a back strain.

Grothe and his Eels team told City last Sunday he would be unfit to play but he was still required to be ruled out by City officials.

The winger almost missed Monday's medical, turning up over two hours late because he had slept in from a big night out and lost his mobile phone.

It is not known if Grothe's injury is serious and Eels officials did not immediately return phone calls

Of course we can

the bad news: he's out. the good news: it might only be for four weeks. the good news: kearney's playing great, and vagana at five eighth will get lots more ball. more good news: kimmorley's back in two weeks.

of course this is terrible news for the sharks; we've been winning lots of games off dykes' back. but, we've got ball players like vagana, latu, and kearney. i'd also look for kingston and simmons to get themselves much more involved.

So we might struggle a little, but at least the next couple of weeks are relatively easy, winable games. raiders, warriors, bulldogs. we'll start near-favorites in each of them, even without kimmorley and dykes. vagana, kearney, kimmorley and dykes are some of the best halves in the game, now we're just using a different combination.

it should turn out fine, and go the sharkies.

Cronulla five-eighth Adam Dykes will miss up to three months of rugby league with a ruptured ankle ligament.

Dykes will require surgery after he injured his ankle in the closing stages of the Sharks' NRL victory over St George Illawarra on Sunday and he won't be able to play for up to 12 weeks.

The news is a huge blow to the resurgent Sharks who had charged into the top eight on the back of three straight wins orchestrated by the veteran half.

Sharks physiotherapist Matt Green said Dykes's injury was similar to that suffered by halfback Brett Kimmorley five weeks ago.

"It is very similar to Brett's ankle injury, with the difference being Adam has completely ruptured the ligament, which means he is likely to require surgery and have a pin put in to stabilise the joint," said Green.

"After that he will be in a boot for about eight weeks before we can do any rehab on the ankle."

The surgery is likely to take place later this week.

Kimmorley is expected to return next week after resuming training on Monday.

Dykes to quit Sharks???

From Sunday Tele
Buzz and Bec column

SHHHH!

WE are hearing that Adam Dykes is no certainty to see out the final year of his contract with the Sharks next season. An English club with a big fat chequebook isabout to put forward an offer that's expected to be too good to refuse.

(of course, when times get tough at a particular club, these columnists tend to write whatever they like to stir the pot. Still, might be a good solution for everyone)

Why couldn't an English Club pick up Kimmorley instead?

If I was Dykes I'd want to get away from the Sharks so I wouldn't blame him for leaving.

what? like when dykesy went to parra?
he sure ripped it up there.
i reckon they're stressin out coz they're realising that they are playing like a bunch of U/6 specials, and losing won't get them an end of year bonus.

and he will go.
he was supposed to go last year but the deal fell through remember.
i know he was going good earlier in the season, but i've heard that he doesn't fit in with the team and thats enough reason for me.
disloyalty and disruption of team harmony is not what we need right now.

Kimmorley and Dykes are only a year apart in age. They are both heading towards the end of their careers.
