Brisbane, it's crap
What interest does a 20 something have with league? The answer is not as typical as you think. If you were to pose that question to most people they'd probably respond with something like "oh, it's because of the guys." Let me tell you, that is not true. Actually, for what seems like most "girls" it is true however, there is a large population of women that think otherwise; myself included.

What attracts me to this game is not superficial. It is the unrivalled passion and drive that fuels it. My admiration for this sport stems from the pure intensity I see played on field. This electricity of this game is so strong you can't help being pulled into it, even if you are at home watching. When I see Covell charging down the left side of the field with the ball tucked under his arm it's hard to ignore my heart pounding in my ears. Or even when he leaps above the rest of the pack to pluck the ball out of mid air you cannot deny the gulp of air you take with him. The athleticism and skill demonstrated by these incredible athletes is something that shouldn't go unappreciated. In saying that, it is not only their athletic prowess that I'm in awe of, but their tenacity and heart as well. I guess why I love the Sharks is because of their honesty, their heart, and their spirit. It's unfortunate that this season has seen them in an unfavourable light but I believe in giving credit where credit is due and I feel that the Sharks have handled this season with tact and an incredible amount guts. I feel that the Sharks are one of very few teams that can boast of having the biggest heart in the game today. With everything that has been thrown at them, they simply chose to rise above it. They did not break ranks, they admitted their faults, and not once they succumb to the pressures applied by the all too eager media. Honesty is the best policy and they did not hide from anyone. I appreciate every last bit of effort they have given.

Referring back to the NRL as a whole, I'd just like to bring up the issue regarding women in the NRL. I saw the Google article called "behind enemy lines" and I thought to myself, since when were women the enemy? If we are, it's only because female reporters make it so. So much unnecessary drama is created. The reporter in the article made mention to an incident involving the guys locker room. When did it become ok for women to go into the guys locker room? It's the GUYS room for a reason. I'm willing to bet that if a male reporter was as adamant to follow suit in the ladies locker room whilst they were changing kit he'd be nailed to a 2x4. Really, when you look at it, League started as a man's sport, end of story. It has made leaps and bounds as far as incorporating women go and yes, there are probably still a few more hills to get over but it will come in time. In saying that though, there are just some places you do not go so accept it, and move on.

At the end of the day I would really love to see the game concentrate on what's' most important, which is the game. Stop the Hollywood production, stop the magazine presses and just get to the task at hand and concentrate on the foundations that make this sport so great.

I'm so happy to see that a female from the other side of the world, currently living in Brisbane, can be so passionate about the Sharks!

It really shows they have a broader appeal than some may suggest.

Great post Ice, just noticed you put it up at 2.32am...can't sleep, eh? You've been quite active on the posting front lately and I, for one, have enjoyed reading the views of a female league supporter and, more importantly, a passionate Sharks fan as well. It's great to see a girl who can appreciate the sport for it's actual sporting qualities, not just for the guys that play it.

I'm really heartened that a lady who is not from the Shire, hell not even form Australia, can recognise the qualities in our club that are often overlooked or blatantly ignored by our detractors.

The Sharks, unlike so many NRL clubs today, still represent their suburban hearltland - The Sutherland Shire. It is a proud community that punches well above it's weight in so many areas - sporting achievement being just one. Unfortunately, most NRL clubs have abandoned their traditional roots - like St George/Illawarra and Wests Tigers - or their communities no longer have any interest in them - like the Eastern Suburbs.

For many years before the inception of the Sharks, the Shire contributed athletes to the success of other clubs without recognition, most notably the legendary St George teams of the '50's and '60's. Having gone it alone, we have constantly struggled to hold onto our talented juniors and have always been in a precarious position financially, save for the brief fling with Super League. Regardless of the hardships that we have been faced with, the heart and pride that the club has shown in the jersey hasn't wavered - something you have recognised in this years team.

With all the turmoil that has come before us this season, there is, I feel a great many reasons to take heart. With the appointment of a new board and CEO, I really believe that the winds of change are blowing through the club and we are at the beginning of what will be a great era. The club is going back to it's roots; the community and I believe the Shire will respond in kind. There is a massive undercurrent of desire in the community for the club to succeed but many have chosen to turn their back on it after so many years of disappointment but, believe me, it will only take an inkling of success for those people to come flooding behind the Sharks once again.

People here want to celebrate their community and want to see success. Believe me when I tell you, the NRL will have seen nothing like the scenes of pride and jubilation that will happen on the day the Sharks bring home the Cup.

So stick around, you might have to be patient but it will be worth it!;)

Well said Ice, love your work. I am proud of the Sharks for the way they have managed themselves this year. Since they got tough with Bird they have really changed the way they view their players. I am happy with what the Sharks have done with player issues. Look at what Manly, The Roosters & Melbourne have done with their player issues. Melbourne's version of tough, is a 2 week indefinite suspension of their best player. Manly's version was nothing until the NRL stepped in. The Roosters had the same stance until Myles stuffed up.

I will continue to support the Sharks while they take strong measures against anti-social behaviour. The players are not expected to be perfect, just behaviour appropriatley.

Woah.. Who let you out of the kitchen?

Seriously though Icey, great post of a great perception of the game and our Club. I honestly believe most females in League (sport and life in generally actually) are pretty much on a similar page to you, we just don't hear much from that angle because that sort of attitude doesn't create controversy and attract headlines.

You were taking the piss when you said about your heart thumping seeing Covell charge down a sideline though, right? If not that thumping sound you heard might have actually been your eyelids as you dozed off watching him ever so slowly navigate his way up (or across) the field.

Well thank you for your comments, I appreciate that. I do feel that there is poor female representation in this game. Watching the footy show some time back now when that female reporter was on and bashing the sharks and matty johns I felt quite angry and I didn't think that the Sharks were represented fairly by a female. I personally would have loved the chance to sit opposite her and share exactly what I thought and show the rest of the NRL community that the SHarks are not what people like her make them out to be. If our Sharks our doing an image overhaul I think some female representation is a start in the right direction. I am the first one to put my hand up!

It's clear I cannot get out there and play amongst the rest of them but it would be great for a female as passionate as myself to become more involved, sans the pom poms however :p.

Capital Shark I am not talking the piss. I am aware of his speed on the field that's what makes it more exciting

Nice to see a female from Brisbane with the same mentality as myself.

I think the club has progressed in leaps and bounds throughout this season. Although it might not be evident when looking at the ladder, i believe the sharks have made more progress than all the other teams in the comp.

I am so proud of the boys, and of the fans! I couldnt see alot of broncos fans i know hold on so tight to their team if they went through a year like we just did...

and i would totally be all for icesharky going on the footy show haha. Will be good to add some more perspective :)

This is a really good thread, I have been a passionate supporter of the game since the age of 5 when my dad took me along to watch his beloved Roosters play (don’t hold that against me).
As a female working in sport first and foremost you have to be a professional, it is a male dominated sport but being realistic it is after all a game played by males!

If a female reporter has a job to do in interviewing the players I really don’t see it necessary that she be blocked or feel uncomfortable entering the change rooms. What I would say is that there is a time and a place for everyone to chat to a player maybe there is an alternative way to get that one on one time with a player without both parties feeling uncomfortable (note both parties - I don’t think the players would feel that comfortable either)

I really love the game and that’s I think the thing that hurts the most. Not enough focus and attention has been given to the players and what they go through week to week to get out on the field and give it their best.

I too would really love to see the focus swing more to the achievements of the players and more attention given to some up and coming talents.

Women in League Survey asks if we would like fashion advice and recipes from NRL

Is it me or am I not the average female footy fan? I think I’m fairly typical. I like rugby league because I like rugby league. That’s pretty much it. I don’t like follow league for fashion advice, health and beauty insights or surprisingly, even for parenting advice.

So I’m still reeling in shock from the Women in League Survey on the NRL.com website. Apart from the fact that you can’t answer questions on the survey if you have kids still too young to either play the game or be a fan, the survey asks if women would like to receive fashion advice, health and beauty information, recipes or parenting advice as part of a Woman in League Newsletter. I wanted to answer “you have got to be kidding” to all these questions but instead I had to rank them 1 to 8.

Could someone please help me out here? Why would I want fashion, parenting or beauty advice from the NRL? Would men ever be asked if they would like fashion, parenting or beauty advice as part of a footy newsletter? Never, is my very safe bet, unless it's a spoof skit on the Footy Show.

Isn’t the assumption that men and woman are so very different part of the problem (real or imagined) facing the rugby league and the NRL. Female fans of league have forever followed the game they love because they love the game. And just like men, that means they love the players, skill, raw excitement, passion and sense of community that comes with being a fan. Why would the NRL think any differently? I don’t know any women who follow the Sea Eagles, the Sharks or Broncos to pick up fashion tips or sneak over to their girlfriends house to watch the game in the hope of getting some ideas on how to manage teenagers.

We watch the game because we love THE GAME. What do I want in a newsletter? All credit to the NRL for asking and maybe I'm a simple soul but I just want news and information on rugby league. I don’t need something written exclusively by woman but more female voices would be a positive. There are plenty of woman who can write about the game in a way that appeals to woman and there are also plenty of men that woman would like to hear from. But please, no beauty tips, or heaven forbid recipes! That would be a step back into the 1950’s not a step forward.

For me it's pretty basic, if you want woman to feel like equals in the world of rugby league, just treat them as such. Or woman of league, am I the odd one out? Do you want beauty news in your footy newsletter? Or a Greg Inglis biscuit recipe in your inbox?
