Hey everyone, just a question that's been on my mind...

Im under the impression that a 20m optional restart (i.e, if one is to kick to touch and find it) does NOT have to be a drop kick, but just a general play kick.

Is that correct?

Haven't seen anyone attempt it in a while.

Correct mate. Just a normal kick.

Thurston managed it a few years ago when they were down late in a game.

Definitely a general kick not a drop kick.

Players have done it, but it's rare and generally not something you take note of.

I'm sure most halves could do it regularly but the NRL coaches would slaughter you if you get it wrong, no room for 'risks'.

*Edit* - not really much point now anyway given you get the 7 tackle set

If u were chasing points it would be a huge advantage to u if you pull it off. Could make 30-40 metres out of it

Risk v Reward i guess.

NRL Coaches are already ridiculously defensive and unlikely to take risks, so with 7 tackle sets now ending up in a decent attacking position by the end of it, i can't see many coaches changing their ways.

It bugs me a bit actually, i'd like to see teams every now and then go for the short kick off, try and find the sideline from the kick offs etc.

Was always fun watching Preston take the short kick and regather from a drop out.

There is definitely too much predictability to the game at the moment.

Yeah risk vs reward. Its not a play youd consider often, but its not different to some dude taking the quick tap and making 10 metres or going the length of the field. Obviously you want the defense to be in no way able to block the ball from going out. So the way the defender are formed or if they r out of order would help
