Sharks face hefty fine over trainer spooking goalkicker

Cronulla could cop a heavy fine after one of their trainers appeared to put Jamal Fogarty off as he attempted a crucial kick for goal in Sunday’s clash at Shark Park.

Former NRL player Daniel Holdsworth ran near Fogarty in his line of sight as the Raiders halfback tried to convert a James Schiller try in the 72nd minute of the contest.

Canberra trailed 30-22 at the time and if Fogarty had landed the sideline conversion, it would have made it a six-point margin heading into the final

Holdsworth trotted past Fogarty as he moved in to kick the ball and the attempt hit the upright and bounced away. Cronulla went on to win 36-22 but according to a Sydney Morning Herald report, the Raiders intend to take the matter up with the NRL by lodging a formal complaint.

Clubs have been fined $5000 for such actions in the past but Sharks legend Paul Gallen on 100% Footy was adamant Holdsworth should not have a case to answer because “he’s not in the field of play”.

“Fogarty is looking at nothing but the ball,” he argued.

I would have taken a 3-1 start going into the bye at the start of the season.

No issue for mine losing to the Tigers, they're playing good footy. Just not happy with the manner in which we lost, that's not good enough.

After the bye we have

Souths away
Cows home
Raiders away
Drags home

Would obviously love to win them all, and they are all very winnable. Not sure we're playing well enough for that so I'd be relatively OK with 3.

Agree, very happy to take the 3 wins from the first 4.

I think 3 of the next 4 would be a fantastic result. Souths looked a bit better this week, and Cows/raiders games won't be walks in the park. Dragons game is the only one if be confident in cleaning up, but even they have caught a few teams napping, and Flanno will be keen to get one over us. 3/4 should have us pretty firmly in the top 4 at that point.

Storm in a tea cup IMHO.

If we get a fine for that, the NRL are kidding themselves.
What next? Make the crowd go silent?

I know there was a game where (maybe a Parra runner) ran across the face of goal which may have distracted Cleary for a miss a few years back, but that was in direct sight of the goal face and whilst he was moving in for the kick. That deserved a fine. But this??.

If Fogarty can’t focus solely on his kick and put other “distractions“ out of his mind, then maybe he shouldn’t be their kicker.

If it’s a $5000 dollar fine for running across the goal face in a game the kicking team ends up losing by two hard to imagine this could be more

For 5K I'd run onto the field and swat it out of the air.

Seems a pretty useless amount in all honesty

I think it was more of a 'hey, don't do this **** again' amount more than a 'punishment' amount.
We could cop similar as although much less bad example is the second warning to clubs - if ours was same as Eels Penrith one you'd have to up it to 10 or 20 I think

That will do me. He has 13000 fans booing and someone running behind him spooks him? Ma please.
If the trainer was legitimately in his line of sight then I think it would put a kicker off. I just don't think he was, though.

If we want to get more Moylan like shape back in attack then Trindall would have to start running straight at the line and slowing down/ stopping in it. This used to bring in the defense with Mozza and then he would spread the ball or pop it out back but Moylan had a knack for the timing and subelty that I don't think Trindall or Nicho have.

Trindall likes to run which is fair enough but if he runs cross field he just drags the defensive line over with him eventually running us into less space. Moylan did it well middle of the field.

However there is more to our loss of shape than just Moylan I feel, there's gotta be coaching/structural changes too. We are generally playing flatter and with less depth and are not running the nice to watch ball spreading / cut out players we did under Fitz in seasons past. Teams got wise to it but it still had a time and place.

I think there was one or 2 out the back plays involving Kennedy in round 1 & 2 but it resulted in a bad tap on from Will and possibly a handling error in another.

I think both go hand in hand. Any structural changes are a result of trying to play the best way with what you have, rather than trying to make Tricky play like Moylan.

It had no time and place against top teams at all.. We were a mess and it was the only thing we threw at them. Our attack basically became non-existent because of the side to side
I don’t mind that the team is finding different ways to cross the line which will help make us more creative in the long run
