Summary for the graph challenged.
  • Talakai was completely taken out of the game at second row, but doing a job for his coach/team
  • Both low-minute benchies were super involved
  • Wilton took a lot of hard carries, but struggled to get quick ptbs
  • Very little involvement from middles inside their own 20 (outside backs did a lot of heavy lifting)
  • Kaufusi was buried in possession (40%). Tuks (61%) and Williams (55%) got plenty of ball
  • Was actually an underwhelming game from Williams in terms of getting quick ptbs (only won the ruck on 50% of his carries) but he got a couple of good onces in the attacking end leading to tries.
  • Errors in the first 22 minutes got the Sharks in a hole
  • Zero errors from Nicho in this one; nice bounce back

Will have a look at some team stats in the next few days.

Kaufusi doesn't need the ball to be effective but would be nice see him get a chance with it haha
(This would also mean we aren't shitting the bed for the first 20mins, which I would appreciate)

When we say “very little involvement from the middles inside our 20” - how does this correlate against the wider competition? I’d tend to presume this is pretty standard

I would think so too
It is pretty standard across the league, but there are games where the Sharks have had higher involvement from their forwards inside 20. E.g. the finals game last year. This points either to a change in strategy, or sometimes a game with a lot of handovers (set start tackle 0 rather than scrum or kick often leads to a forward run rather than an outside back).

The reason I capture this is to differentiate between the roles of the forwards.

Below is Fincane's season to date. He may not be making barnstorming runs to impress the fans, but he is taking a high amount of carries inside of his own 40 and way more than any other forward inside his own 20 (and winning the ruck fairly consistently).

Contrast that with Rudolf (below that) who is doing more overall "stuff" but in different parts of the field.

Even not knowing who the players are, I could look at this and say that player #1 is probably a benchie with instructions to play at high intensity and get back behind the ball at every opportunity but most the fans will probably have a higher opinion of player #2 because he will have looked better in these games by virtue of having taken the majority of his carries in midfield and the attacking end.
