Bennett and I'm guessing everyone else in here with that view are all white. As am I. I'd prefer to listen to people like Nicho on matters such as these.
I was tired and out last night so may not have got the point across. He's not saying that this particular incident isn't an issue, and Mam shouldn't be offended, but more that people trying to turn it into a wide spread issue are blowing it out of proportion. I'll drop it below.

Wayne Bennett has come out swinging on the Ezra Mam-Spencer Leniu saga, insisting the sport is not racist and calling for the “drama queens to stay out of the argument”.

One of the code’s most powerful voices, Bennett has broken his silence on the ‘Monkey-gate’ affair as Roosters prop Leniu prepares to defend allegations of a racist slur at the NRL judiciary next week.

Leniu could face up to eight weeks on the sidelines if found guilty of allegedly calling Mam a “monkey”, with Souths superstar and proud Indigenous icon Latrell Mitchell calling for the Roosters enforcer to be suspended for three months or more.

But Bennett, who has coached some of the code’s greatest Indigenous athletes, including Mitchell, Steve Renouf and Wendell Sailor, called for calm and common sense over the Leniu-Mam firestorm.

“We are not a racist game,” Bennett said.

“The game doesn’t have to take a strong stand on this. The game has always taken a stand on racism. It’s bulls*** to think otherwise.

“We don’t tolerate racism in our game and we have always included all races – we can all be one in rugby league.

“It happens very irregularly in our game.

“I am proud of the game and I am proud of the way we as clubs conduct ourselves, regardless of what race you are.

“All the drama queens should stay out of the argument.”

Bennett made it clear he does not condone racism in any walk of life.

Asked what suspension the NRL should dish out to Leniu if he is found guilty of racially abusing Mam, the Dolphins super coach was unequivocal.

“The game has to handle this in the manner they handle any other situation that’s thrown at it,” Bennett said.

“The NRL may have to come up with a penalty, but if he is found guilty, I don’t believe it should be an overkill penalty.

“It should be a fair and reasonable penalty and we all move on.

“We have all been in a situation where we have said something we regret, including the very people now calling for blood.

“We have all been guilty of saying something silly.

“He (Leniu) can’t take it back and it’s been said.

“The Roosters guy is of Polynesian descent.

“But the game has acted the way it should do, it got reported and the game will deal with it.”

Bennett says Mam would not be the only Bronco to have been the victim of a racial slur, revealing he has supported Brisbane’s Indigenous legends Renouf, Sailor and Thaiday through difficult periods in their careers.

“Of course you feel for players who are racially abused,” he said.

“It hurts them.

“I’ve had guys like Steve Renouf, Wendell Sailor and Sam Thaiday, great Indigenous players I coached, they copped their share and they went through it.

“They will always remember their slurs, but we protected and supported them as much as we could.

“Our game is not racist, it never has been. When you look back over the history of our game, it’s not something that has been a major issue with us.

“We have some wonderful Indigenous players and they have been treated as well as anyone in the team.

“Arthur Beetson played our game and he was Australian sport’s first indigenous captain. He could not have got any more accolades in his life, so don’t tell me rugby league doesn’t act on racism.

“In this case, it’s one word against another, it’s a tough one, so I’ll leave it to the NRL.”

When I say WOKE, the so called PERFECT digitally communitive society , where everyone spends 2 minutes thinking what they should say to align with everyone elses feelings ,
Comedians won't exist anymore, all sued.
Is that what we want ?

FAAARK, how would this go down in a Broken Hill Pub on a Friday Avro ?
Sorry Johnno you've hurt my feelings. .

Everything can be taken out of context IF you dig deep enough , I will BET a comment from one dark fella to another dark fella wasn't meant as a racist weapon .
Aaaah , in the moment Leniu thinks you're an Indigenous Australian , I've read somewhere Monkey is derogative to your culture ONLY , I can use that on the playing field to hurt you when I get the opportunity - NO WAY it was aimed at a particular race

Does anyone really think it was intended to be racist comment from a Samoan ( who has most likely experienced racism) to an Australian Indigenous person ?

This is the clincher , YES or NO
Sure there might be those that pretend to be perfect, there are in every part of society about anything. It's more about how over time language and what's acceptable changes. In the 60's/70's those guys in the pub were probably dropping the n slur left and right, talking about how women are too emotional to vote and complaining about how the world's gone mad and you can't say anything anymore. If you're using them as a barometer for what is okay you're too far to one side on this.

Can some people be overdramatic, yes. Including the people that think stand up comedy is dying or you'll get sued for saying things.

The only constant is change, and if you actually deal in realities, no one is asking much of you.

This entire conversation is just stupid

Seriously none of you are going to change each other's minds, your arguing for the sake of it ffs.

Move on.
I saw the Bortsignal in the air, I got here as fast as I could!
Are we still solving racism?

Rarely have I waited for anyone to say my name to join (or start) a discussion!

That was just a cloud shaped like a dick n balls
All clouds look like dick n balls
My psychologist took a lot of notes after that

Parra have done a doco on Shaun Lane's battles with injury and the mental health challenges that come with it.

Will also drop this in the Mens Room.

So what happens in the future if a player called wanker or softcock and they get upset?

What does that term mean to future player?
If it is belittling them based on born characteristics like race or sexuality and has a long history of being offensive and prejudicial and discriminatory behaviour they might get complained about.

Otherwise the same as now I assume.

Stop being a soft cock or a wanker. It's more the racial undertones. It has been blown way out of proportion though.
Agree.

They probably gave the players a squillion talks about the consequences off dodgy off-field behaviour but weren't prepared for something like this. The 8 day delay between the incident and the judiciary has made it worse imho. Journos gonna journo.

Absolutely. This is sorta what we been talking about. Sledging in a "normal" work place isn't gonna fly, you'll be HR'd the **** out. On a sports field you're open to to a degree of mental torment that in most any other job would be considered bullying & harassment.

Setting made it worse
His post game comments made it worse
Hotel stuff made it worse
Whoever Paris is made it worse
Delay in judiciary made it worse

The bit more ambiguity around the phrase used hasn’t helped.

Yeah but it’s perfectly valid different work places draw lines in different places. I don’t think it is unreasonable to put racism on the wrong side of the line in the NRL, and I don’t think it reflects poorly on Mam to call it out.

I cannot believe in this modern age that we still have people that resort to racism. It is a no brainer to me, we are all created equal and should be treated as such. I deal with people from all backgrounds in my job and to me they are all the same. I am looking for someone that can do the job well rather than anything else.
