Anyone else feeling a little underwhelmed by the Vegas opening? I like the idea of it, just wish it was a full Rd 1 this weekend.

I feel like you could give those teams the bye in week 2, and have them cross over week 3 to the same effect. Have four less byes over origin or something.

I guess in that circumstance Vegas wouldn't be the 'opening'.
Yeah - not playing week 1 feels weird.

Would suck even more for Tigers fans.

I feel like five years of it will get old for Aussies.
At least the game air at a friendly time... actually, they're better than the usual times! Maybe we should move the whole comp over as Roy and HG suggested!
I can cop it getting old for Aussies if I see it building momentum for Americans.
My concern is any novelty wears off there too and the NRL has to keep splashing big on advertising to try and not embarrass themselves.
I wonder how much research/expertise determined 5 years of 1 day of RL is the formula to win over their betting market?

That's pretty typical for them though

Yeah it's interesting. I know it's a huge market but I'm not sure how much revenue it's going to realistically raise.

Well with Rnd 1 kicking off on a Sunday and we playing later in the week on the Friday technically we are playing in week 1 which unfortunately guarantees us a loss

My concern is the bunker slowing the game down to a slideshow making new fans/audiences question how fast paced Rugby League really is considering that is a big point they have been sold on in comparison to NFL. Plus some potentially confusing or bogus decisions in the mix for new fans trying to learn and understand the game.

I have to wonder if the refs have been instructed to officiate these Vegas games more like an Origin series to keep the pace up and allow more aggression from players for entertainment purposes.

It being a novelty would be a huge win! I wonder how much awareness has actually been raised?
I'm getting quite a few "American reacts to NRL' videos in my YouTube feed... not big subscriber numbers but I probably part of the marketing push. Seeing that Aussie NFL player awkwardly try to figure out how to play an NRL clip on his phone to The Rock was cringeworthy...

The Rock was all behind Samoa in the Rugby League World Cup so he already knows about the sport even if he doesn't follow it closely (dunno)

A Tripple M journo over in the US is covering the games and said there isn't much talk or hype about it amongst the yanks at this stage but there's a bunch of aussies over there in their teams jerseys. I think the players are currently doing training sessions in LA or something so aren't in Vegas yet

Need to be realistic the NRL games arn't going to draw more interest than what ever normal domestic NFL, NBA, NHL games are going on this weekend. Plus Americans don't know about anything outside their own country. Most of them will think this is Rugby or Awrziiiie Rules

Yeah as has been said before it's not so much about attendance, more gambling revenue. I really can't see them getting much revenue out of it but hope I'm wrong.

Why gamble on a sport you don't understand the rules and with teams you have no idea of form line and history? Genuine question, not being a smart ass or arguing it isn't about gambling revenue but how do you convince a punter to put down money on a sport that is new to them? Just for lolz and the thrill?

I spose I have had the odd punt on a horse race and it's not a sport I follow at all but it's not a new or foreign sport to me and it's not a team sport and I certainly didn't become a regular horse race punter.

Best chance of winning money though would be to stick with sports you know

When NFL comes to Australia do we feel the urge to bet on it? Don't think so

I understand NFL and don't bet on it. Still, I don't think it's even everyone they're after... if they can get a slice of the whales, that'd be big bucks.

I could be wrong but I think The Rock made one video after like a 1000 people tagged him on twitter.

I saw a video of Gronk reacting to some clips, Gronk was never known for his smarts and just highlighted how US-centric they are over there.
He spoke like Latrell palming someone off was a stiff arm we have learnt from the NFL and like dropkicks are something we must have picked up from NFL also, even though they don't even do them anymore

Because of a problematic addiction

Typical Merican pig headiness - centre of the universe. Ok so are us aussies but we ain't as ignorant or up ourselves

Rugby and it's breakaway varient League have been around as long as American football (which apparently was invented in Canada from an amalgamation of Soccer and Rugby lol)

And it's the ex Aussie rules players going over to the NFL to teach them how to punt and kick

Dunno mate but that's what they're banking on, PVL has said as much many times.

I’m not a punter at all. Went to the Melbourne Cup once and put $20 on something. Might throw $2 on Keno at the bowlo once a year. That’s about it for me.

I do have plenty of mates who are in to though, it they are always trying for a whacky multi. Even just for $5 or whatever they’ll back an NRL game in to a horse in to whoever is the shortest favourite in some American sport they know nothing about, or soccer game etc.

Even if the NRL just becomes that “third leg in a whacky multi” option for US betters it’s more money coming in to the game. Worth a crack.

Same with Basketball and hockey.

Only true US sport is baseball

Definitely worth a crack but I can't see the NRL getting anywhere near as much interest as the big US codes here. Whether you are into them, or not, people here are still aware of it.

I think the people who go to watch it live and don't know the game will be disappointed.

The people who watch it on TV will probably love it.

NRL is a great TV sport.

Being only two hours they'll probably feel ripped off... It's no where near enough time to low and slow a brisket in the carpark.
