Awkward for the NRL when Jennings names next week

The ex-wife of Michael Jennings has slammed the NRL’s decision to allow the Roosters star to resume his career, claiming the governing body “doesn’t take the safety of women seriously.”

Jennings played in Friday night’s loss to the Bulldogs after being activated as a concussion substitute, his first NRL game since serving a three-year ban for testing positive to prohibited substances LGD-4033 (Ligandrol) and Ibutamoren.

There is another mark against his name. Jennings was ordered to pay his ex-wife, Kirra Wilden, nearly $500,000 in damages for personal injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorder, following a civil case in the NSW District Court in December 2021. Wilden alleged in court that Jennings had verbally and sexually abused her during their relationship, that he would also drink and gamble heavily, and used cocaine regularly. Jennings denied the allegations.

The matter isn’t over. That ruling by Judge David Wilson SC came almost two years ago and Jennings has since lost an appeal to clear his name and reduce the $490,091.05 amount Wilden was awarded.

The NRL chose to register Jennings after an application from the Roosters, which included outlining his desire to fulfil his financial obligations to his ex-wife.

“I think it’s disgraceful that they have allowed this to happen,” Wilden said. “It’s upsetting as I feel the NRL doesn’t take the safety of women seriously.

“People wonder why people don’t speak up about these types of incidents, it’s because I feel nothing gets done about it in time.”

The issue is expected to come into sharp focus this week. Friday marked Jennings’ 299th first-grade appearance and he may get the opportunity to celebrate his 300th game if selected for Thursday night’s clash against Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Traditionally, the NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo is on hand to present the game ball to players celebrating such a milestone. Only a fortnight ago, Roosters teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves played in his 300th game and Abdo was there to make the presentation.

Lawyers acting for Wilden said their client has yet to receive any money from Jennings.

“NRL represents our Australian spirit and our international identity,” said Moya de Luca-Leonard, the solicitor on the record in the personal injury case. “Our footy players are setting standards and should follow the law.”

The NRL and the Roosters were contacted for comment.

In June 2022, a judge found that Jennings sold three investment properties and paid the proceeds, which exceeded $1.6 million, to a third party.

“I find that the payment of money to [a third party] was done in order to dissipate or minimise the defendant’s assets in a transparent attempt to avoid satisfying the judgement made in favour of the plaintiff [Wilden],” the judge found.

Speaking after Friday night’s loss, Roosters coach Trent Robinson said Jennings had made a positive contribution after coming onto the field.

“I thought he was great,” Robinson said. “He’s been playing that way, training that way and [it] was really nice to see him play, get out there and show that he’s still got gas and he’s still got effort.”

Asked if he felt Jennings had been capable of making an NRL return, Robinson said: “I didn’t even know if he’d make the squad, to be honest.

“You know, he was on a 14-week trial there, and he was 10 kilos heavier, and his purpose is really clear about why he plays the game now, with his family and wanting to re-write his name in the right way, and do the right thing.

“So, his purpose is really clear, he worked really hard, and I really enjoyed watching him play in reggies [reserve grade].”

Nrl can only blame themselves. Why can't they just wait until all matters have been resolved.

Sloan
GREAT IN ATTACK, BUT HE CAN'T TACKLE?

Or can he? Let's have a look at the 17 fullbacks in the competition during the first 4 rounds of the 2024 season. Yes I know it's a small sample size, but lets try not to judge players based on what they did or didn't do in 2023 and instead have a look at what they've actually done this year. Maybe some players actually put hard work in during the off season to improve in this area and maybe we should start to recognise that hard work. All I can do is show you the facts. it's up to you how you interpret these facts. So lets rank all 17 fullbacks based on their defensive efficiency this year:

1. Reece Walsh - I’ve criticised his defence in the past, but his start to the year before injury has been solid. Not a lot of volume defensively, but he has yet to miss a tackle in 2024 so is 12 from 12 at 100% efficiency

2. Taine Tuaupiki - He was the back up for the Warriors with CNK out injured and now he’s been injured as well, but hard to fault the rookies work defensively making 14 from 15 tackles at 93.3% efficiency

3. Tyrell Sloan - There’s an argument that he’s been the most impressive defensively of all the fullbacks in the competition. Only Will Kennedy has made more tackles than the Dragons custodian, while Kennedy has missed almost triple the number of tackles that Sloan has. Sloan has made 26 tackles from the 29 attempted at 89.7%

4. Jahream Bula - like the top 2 Bula only has the 3 games compared to Sloan with 4, but for Bula it’s because his team had a bye. Pretty reliable defensively and a touch busier than the top 2 with 15 from 17 tackles at 88.2%

5. Latrell Mitchell - A bigger body it is expected that Mitchell will be fairly capable defensively. Not as busy as Sloan in this area of the game and the same number of missed tackles 18 from 21 at 85.7%

6. James Tedesco - 24 from 29 at 82.8%

7. Ryan Papenhuyzen - 8 from 10 at 80%

7. Hamiso Tabuai Fidow - 12 from 15 at 80%

9. Will Kennedy - 27 from 35 at 77.1%

10. Scott Drinkwater - 16 from 21 at 76.2%

11. Jordan Rapana - 25 from 33 at 75.8%

11. Dylan Edwards - 25 from 33 at 75.8%

13. Tom Trbojevic - 13 from 18 at 72.2%

14. Keano Kini - 10 from 14 at 71.4%

15. Blake Taafe - 17 from 24 at 70.8%

16. Kalyn Ponga - 11 from 16 at 68.8%

17. Clint Gutherson - 12 from 18 at 66.7%

I know we can point at individual efforts of Wills (one on the sideline comes to mind) but why had he had to make so many tackles?
% actually decent

Interesting stat.
One thing though, and I don't have a specific player in mind (well maybe Latrell), but if the guy is out of position most of the time, he won't have to make (and subsequently miss) too many tackles.

Souths have been that bad that if Titans lose by less than 18 tomorrow Rabbits will be coming last behind a team that hasn't won a game.

They've done it!

Up the titans only losing by 13
