Are you saying that they are getting numbers in tackles and deliberately not putting the player to ground?

Was this all game, or just that period after half time? I'll re-watch and check it out.

Could be just related again to the Sharks not having compressed defence because the Souths sets started farther out, but I'd have to see the instances you are talking about to comment.

Defensively you would usually cover only ~60% of width the field when a team is coming off their own line, 80% when they reach half way, and 100% when defending your line. If a team starts a set on their 30 they won't be facing as many defenders as they would if they are coming off their 10.

It should be impossible to go through a team from inside your own end. The compressed defence is daring you to try to take risks and go around them.

Maybe it was just when the bunnies had a compressed line, but yeah it seemed to me the bunnies were deliberately holding up the attacker, as a go to strategy. This included then pushing back or toward the sideline while they were held up.

Yeah. I think that is something that all teams do when their line is compressed. First two players in hold the ball runner up, and then more players arrive to drive him back.

The Sharks do this. There was just very little opportunity in the second half because they didn’t build any pressure or force Souths to come out of their end. The only time they finished a set with a kick and tackled Souths inside their 10 they gave up a high tackle penalty.

Trying something different with fancy stats for this year. Here are all of the yardage sets from the first half. Sharks above the line. Bunnies below.

83m Bunnies set is the line break leading to the Thompson no-try; 80m Sharks set is the Trindall try.

This is every set where the team started inside their own 25 and held the ball past tackle 2.

Bunnies had more high yardage sets, but also more low-yardage sets. Zero tackle sets gave both teams a bump.

Rudolf was a bit slow getting back to A defender and Cam Murray picked that out and ran at him before he could start moving up. Caught Rudolf a bit flat footed and that gave him opportunity to offload. Cook took the offload and shook off Hamlin-Uele one on one which allowed him to gain an extra 5-10 meters than if BHU had completed the tackle.
That play began on their 25 and ended up on the 50 so it accounts for half the meters of the set.

So their forwards dominated ours because Cameron Murray and Damien Cook managed to take advantage of our starting props.

I also believe we were a bit unlucky on more than one occasion to not get a repeat or penalty because their markers weren't square or hadn't got back the 10 mtrs . Might not have change the overall result but could have certainly helped our forward momentum at crucial stages .

The team was moving the ball up field effectively all game when they held it.

Only 3 times in the second half did the Sharks get the ball in their own end, work to a kick, and tackle Souths on play 1.

We definitely contributed extensively to beating ourselves, but either of those two would have been massive outs for them.

What this shows is that the two teams were almost identical on yardage sets, and most times a team made good metres it was because they got an extra tackle. Neither team monstered the other, though each team had some periods of ascendancy.

I’d say it was errors, piggy-back penalties, poor ends to sets, and sus left edge defence that cost the game (a bit of shonky reffing also contributed).
