SMH were running a story about the NRL finally looking at the issue of players being poached for more money while under contract. The idea that the NRL are allegedly running with is that a player cannot earn more money for his new club then he was getting at the club he left while under contract for the remaining duration of the contract he had at the club he left.

So say a player is earning $400k at the Titans and has 2 years left on his deal, then say the Roosters come along and offer him $800k to switch clubs while under contract, that would now be not allowed, the Roosters would be only allowed to pay the player $400k for two of the years of his new contract.

What’s everyone’s thoughts about this if it goes ahead?

I love the idea too, my only worry would be the players and agents might see it as a restraint of trade limiting them the ability to earn better money elsewhere. Not totally sure of the legalities of that though.
Contracts have to be worth more than they are today, it is way too easy to get out of one.

"I want the security of a longer NRL contract but I want to be able to whinge my way out of it if a better offer comes along. If I play better I should be able to get more money, if I play worse they have to honour my contract."

I'm unsure how viable it is to call it restriction of trade when it is just fulfilling the trade agreement they made. Don't like the terms, don't sign the contract.
Want years but flexibility to earn more if you get better? Ask for PO years, but you may have to accept a lower salary offer to get terms like that in your favour.

I don't think there is any easy answer mate. As I said, I am all for the idea, I just bet you there would be someone against it and willing to test it in the courts. And as they say, the law is an ass sometimes.

I agree
Hope they test it and it get's found they would be in breach of their contract and NRL says they can't risk registering them a new contract because of past track record or something like that.
A system to better reimburse club that helped them become worth more would be ideal, but could also be very tough to implement fairly

In other news the training photos from today look like Fifita and Johnson both in full training and the round 15 casualty reports suggests both expected to be available this week.
Only photo of Chad looks like he might be doing rehab running and casualty also says he is likely another week away.

Sounds great. Hopefully Fifs back on the bench, and Trindall in 7 and Johnson in 6. Moylan in 14 if Bomber really has to have him in the 17.

If Fifita is back I think he takes Tracey's spot on the bench and we run four forwards again. If not which forward is being dropped for Fifita ?

Maybe he'll spell one of the props, give them a break. Though probably can't rest up yet, one more win, maybe need 2 then we're a lock for finals. Rest players then if they need it.

I agree with your comments here re: options. I think it would be a good compromise to allow for different ways of structuring options.

They need to wear a salary cap breach to the tune of twice the amount for 2 years plus a fine and suspensed fine!
Isn’t that what we got for undisclosed third party payments??
