smh saying Wigan want to come here to play us, but current contracts will keep it in England. So we'll play Wigan at their home

Personally I think it's a dumb idea to even consider playing the match in Australia. The fact that its in the north of England is what makes it.

Also love the fact that we're playing Wigan. They were always the glamour club when I was kid, so it's pretty special thats who we'll be up against.

Wonder if we had lost grand final, if we would knock it back due to timing and throwing out pre season.... After a week of no footy I personally can't wait to see the sharkies play in it, to be the champions of the world..

I'm not surprised. It's disruptive traveling that far for what is essentially a trial match in freezing cold conditions when our season kicks off in hot weather. There really is little benefit, in fact none at all I'd say.

if a NRL club (s) knock back a opportunity to earn $400k the nrl need to step in and check their books, They must have to much money.
That could make a massive difference

Is the 400k to cover expenses though? It wouldn't be cheap taking a footy team to England.

I don't think each team gets 400k, it's the overall purse.

As MB said, it's to cover expenses.

dont think that is the case, i am pretty sure the agreement which was struck between nrl and superleague to play the game in what ever country was the prize money was issued on top of costs, otherwise it is not financially viable to play the game.

I wonder who is putting up that money? Just makes the 100k minor prelim cheque even more ridiculous.

just looking now, the business class flights on virgin currently sit at $8000 return.

you would think we would take a squad of say, 20 ove there. plus staff and other workers. for 30 people that is $240,000 straight up.
add in insurance for the 20 players and you are sitting at $300,000.

then there is accommodation, travel ect, so you are tipping the scales at around the $350k mark before a ball is kicked.

to make a measley what, 40-50k margin is not worth it when travel and injury comes into play.

the $400k is a kicker on top of costs as far as i know
