Watching this donkeys v tits game tonight... damn, there are some dodgy calls going on here.
I don't get the shoulder-charge rule as it is being rolled-out at the moment. If you're the second tackle in - apparently, you're allowed to line an unguarded player up if one of your teammates has got them first around the legs. Just in terms of potential injury, isn't that worse than just a one-on-one shoulder charge?
I don't get the philosophy, intent and meaning behind the rules anymore. If rule changes are all about "player safety" (read that as the NRL not wanting to open itself up to huge insurance claims) then surely a player coming in with a hit on a prone or unprotected position has to be seen as problematic. I'm not asking for a biffo bloodsport or a game of tiddlywinks but I do think that some of the moral and ethical centres of some of the rules need to be looked at.
There are rules - but what are they there to achieve?
