Eels game would likely be at ANZ
Why? Capacity? The Eels wouldn't get any say in it, so ANZ being closer to Parra wouldn't mean anything. Do you reckon they'd get more than 45,000? Or would it go there because the NRL would give that game a better chance of pulling a big crowd than a possible Roosters game v Manly/Penrith on the same weekend?

Ditto for the Roosters with the SFS/Allianz. It's not their choice.

Eels at Allianz or ANZ is all the same for us; I'm just curious as to why you say the game would go there.

It would be their 'home' game. I don't think there's any doubt it would be at ANZ.

That's not actually correct HB. When finals games are played in Sydney the geography of the "home" team doesn't factor in to it. All that matters is whether the NRL thinks they can fill the Stadium, or whether there are other games impacting it (I.e. When they play two games on one weekend they generally play one at each Stadium).

The NRL have previously stated that the "home" team is not consulted for their preference.

Lol no.

I'm sure there is every chance it will be there - I'm just saying that ANZ being closer to Parra is only a factor if it the NRL thinks it makes it more likely to sell more than 45,000 tickets because Parra fans will turn up in numbers. You can't just assume they will play it there because Parra is the "home" team. What if we get beaten by the Cowboys? Are they going to play that game at ANZ front of 20,000? No way! Finals games with a stadium 25% full is a bad look.

A week 3 Prelim Final with 2 Sydney teams would 100% draw more than that and would be at ANZ. A Week 2 final though? Maybe since Parra fans won't have seen their team play semis in 8 years and are playing away in Melbourne they will count on the Parra fans coming out in force. Either way it will be because they think they get get a good crowd and not because Parra is down the road.

When it comes to finals I think 'home' just refers to the same State :p

But would canberra play a home prelim at bruce stadium if they can't fit all the fans?

And there won't be an uproar because they won't make a prelim for another decade lol

Haha.

I remember there was a kerfuffle about it leading into the first week of finals last year. Was nice of us to diffuse the issue for them once and for all.

The NRL have a raging boner for ANZ. They'd play it there if they thought it would get 4,000.

They usually play the game at the ground that is "local" for the home team club. Westy teams play at ANZ, Easty teams play at Allianz. The only time they wouldn't is if they expected to get more than Allianz could hold. Or, if for some reason the ground isn't available because it conflicts with another event.

I agree with your first point about the raging boner, but the "local" thing is not correct. There is no such rule. The Roosters, Sharks and Manly tend to get the SFS unless it looks like they can get a big crowd ... but Penrith, Parra the Dragons, Dogs and Tigers have all played home finals at both venues... and the Rabbitohs typically play at ANZ despite being the closest team physically to the SFS. They also make the Knights play home finals at the SFS, which is much farther away for their fans than ANZ. You can say that the NRL will make Parra play there because of the raging boner, or because there might only be one game in Sydney that weekend, but you can't say that there is any NRL rule about playing at the closest venue to the team because that is nonsense. If you looked at it over the last ten years and factored in crowd sizes etc you will find that the NRL gives exaclty zero ******s who the "local" team is.

BUT ... in the case of a potential Parra v Sharks round 2 final HB is probably right ... if only because the NRL would gamble that plenty of Sharks fans will make the trip regardless of stadiums and plenty of Parra fans will get off their cousins long enough to make it to the game.

According to Kent, Gould took the Panthers spine aside last week and told them "this is how we are going to play ' .

Gee that worked well and if true, it is why Gould has to have a certain style of coach , that he can over ride.
